Technical Help: Problems BEFORE entering the game /

Even with support for Direct3D you would need more RAM, Newton - with 64 megs it\'s slow going even with just Windows!

Wow, Newton, you have very, very, very little RAM.  64 megs RAM??  You\'re going to have a lot of trouble running this application with that little memory.

That said, there is now a \"slow version\" of the client with the update you are running.  You might want to try that one.

Generally speaking, I have to wait a pretty long time for the world to load.  The latest update helped a LOT though.

Questions:

What\'s your operating system (exactly)?
What version of DirectX are you using?
What are your system specs?
What version of the client are you using (have you downloaded the latest version from the home page)?
Is this problem new or is this the first time you have tried the client?
What other applications did you have running at the time?

Guilds Forum / hmmm...
« on: March 16, 2003, 02:12:59 am »
I must say I can understand the desire to get a guild\'s name in early to a new game.  That said, I don\'t think I will be bringing my guild here until there is a bit more to do :) The guild I am an officer in is mostly at present a Dark Age of Camelot guild, although it was started in D2.  We\'re looking to Dragon Empires and World of Warcraft next up, and probably some of us will play SWG (although not me).

That said, if you guys want to take a look at what we\'re about, you can check out http://www.knightsofthesacred.com, and feel free to bear us in mind once PS is up and running a bit more.  In the meantime, I am spending more time on the forums than in the client, largely because there\'s more to do/read here :) and more people to get to know.

At the moment, I am thinking of PS as more of a personal investment than a guild one, but as the world expands I expect that to change :)

Newbie Help (Start Here) /

Yep.  Also, in my experience very, very, very few people actually read (anything, let alone instructions or FAQs).  This might be causing some of the trouble:
http://www.betawatcher.com/Open.asp?title=Planeshift

They\'re pretty popular in the gaming crowd, and they have Planeshift listed as \"Open Beta\" - you guys might want to email them and correct that :)

MMORPG.com has it listed as well, another very popular site:

Wish list / A few thoughts...
« on: March 16, 2003, 12:08:40 am »
Being in the dev universe myself, I\'ll try to be as specific as possible about the things I\'d like to see in the chat interface...at the moment, since there\'s not much to do in the world yet, the chat window is a pretty gigantic component of world interaction - where I, at least, spend a lot of time.

- \"Smart\" command interface - typing a slash (/) and then a command letter or letter combination (or a word) is interpreted *before* the text after it.  I.e., typing /s would immediately focus the chat text field, whereas typing /greet would not - it would simply perform the emote.  This would eliminate the need to click in and out completely.

- Ability to customize size and font of typeface (the current typeface is a little gigantic for me)

- The OpenGL windowing engine being used appears to be a bit buggy - the bottom line of text in both panes is half-below the line, and the text also spills over into the scrollbar region.  The scrolling itself is sort of impossible as well.  Any improvements to this (my suggestion is widening the margin on the bottom and right sides of the inner pane region) would be much appreciated.

- Scrolling via page up and page down buttons that would perform as standard in GUIs

- Custom color-coding of types of messages

- Currently, if you send a tell, it disappears, and the system doesn\'t inform you that you said anything.  Would like to see it say \"you sent JoeSchmoe \"

- Tabbed chat window panes with configurable types of messages (less critical at the moment, but very helpful when populations and kinds of messages increase)

I know that\'s a lot, but that\'s my initial list :)  Thanks again for all the work!

General Discussion /

Hee.  I live AND work with a programmer boyfriend, if I wasn\'t tolerant of bugs I\'d be...um, let\'s call that \"lonely\".

All I can write is PHP, but I assure you that I am capable of thoroughly and repeatedly screwing up the simplest of SQL statements, so I\'m consistently pretty impressed by development efforts on this scale, esp in the 3d arena.

General Discussion / very cool to let us in this early
« on: March 14, 2003, 01:18:31 am »
I must say, I think it\'s pretty damn cool of you guys to start an open source game, and also to let us feel it out early.

While it\'s clear that we\'re in the infant stages of the game, the engine is looking decent, and kudos to the devs for undertaking such a project!
