General Discussion / Re: Pre-release of PlaneShift 0.5 and ChangeLog
« on: November 27, 2009, 07:23:00 pm »
I downloaded the new client and installed on my Windows XP Pro SP2 and... it did not launch.    'This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect'. I fixed this by installing Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package (x86).

It appears the C runtime DLLs packaged with the download do not work as expected. One forum I looked in suggested that from VC++ 2005 on these libraries checked whether they are actually loaded from a system directory, or not, so packing them with the application is no good. Don't know whether this is true or not.

In any case guys you obviously never really try to install this on a freshly installed system... you should really consider at least SOME compatiblity testing   I mean is it really such a big problem to install a fresh copy of Windows in a virtual machine and try to install the thing there?

Not to mention the webpage still states: Minimum Requirements: Windows (2000, XP or Vista) which is not very accurate, because the game just WON'T run on XP SP1 or lower.

Now launcher runs okay. The client crashed on first attempt. On successive attempts it crashed later and later and finally I got as far as logging in and seeing myself standing in Hydlaa.utton Then it crashes. You guys are the crash masters

Edit: Please do not double post use the modify button and you do realise 0.5 is a pre-pre release test version?

I fixed it by installing openAL manually. Running the updater yields:

# PlaneShift Updater Version 5 for win32.
#
# Checking for updates:
# This updaterinfo.xml file is marked as inactive and will not work. Please get an
# other one.
#
# Updater finished, press enter to exit.

(my updaterinfo.xml is the original file from the 0.4.01 distribution)

I tried installing PlaneShift new client 0.4.01 on a clean Windows XP Pro SP1 install. Running the client, setup or updater failed. I fixed this by installing "Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 sp1 redistributable 8.0.50727.762" (download here http://download.chip.eu/en/Microsoft-Visual-C-2005-sp1-redistributable-8.0.50727.762_1295945.html). I couldn't figure out which DLLs this package installed, so I have no idea which one was bad or missing.

Cheers

Edit: Also, the client complains about missing openal32.dll. Perhaps OpenAL should be mentioned as a pre-requisite somewhere?

Hi there,

I just thought I'd share with you some inspirational screenshots of the (upcoming?) game Two Worlds.  :)

You can see some very nice shots here http://games.gamepressure.com/view_screen.asp?ID=82308

Most games appear to me from their screenshots feeble and uninnovative or just so-so, but this one looks rather good. What I find very nice:
- lots of foliage
- lots of detail in both terrain/buildings and characters (and absence of visible triangles)
- nice textures
- the surfaces really look plastic - in most games everything looks just like a flat surface with a texture (is that just bump-mapping or is it occlusion-mapping?)

Now this game will probably require some serious GPU which I don't have (since I'm not a serious gamer), but then, Planeshift graphics are so undemanding that you can run it on a toaster (or just about any GPU with programmable shaders, anyway) so a lot could be added while still maintaining good FPS for most people. (Afterall graphic HW has progressed much in the last few years).

Now if just the Planeshift developers took just a little inspiration from these, perhaps the Planeshift graphics would change from "very nice" to "totally awesome".  \\o//

Sounds good. However, I'd prefer having the current notoriously broken quests either fixed or disabled

The new client simply crashes when I try to run it. Windows XP Pro SP1 (32-bit) running on an Athlon 64 San Diego, DirectX 9.0c. The dump file: http://www4.upload2.net/download/tez3Sn9mhvRDHiQ/PlaneShift_Version_Jul%2004%202006_Addr00B8D424.dmp or, if that fails http://www.upload2.net/page/upload/id/tez3Sn9mhvRDHiQ/pwd/BwZqqb8hUsmcuku.

Running updater yields:
Checking registry version...
There are no updates available.
Checking for missing/damaged files... This may take a while.
Your updater version is newer than the server's... Server is out of date; stopping.
