Linux Specific Issues / Re: Error after today update
« on: December 15, 2006, 11:00:15 am »
I downloaded the new version from

http://mirror.psde.de/

http://www.psmirror.org/

http://ftp.snt.utwente.nl/pub/games/planeshift/

and it works great now (even sound, after I renamed the libs dir).  :woot:

I noticed the updater set some of the files noexec, so I went ahead and chmod 755 the entire tree.  Still no change in behavior, though.

uh oh, could be a driver error. It's the beta driver and has bugs.

I'm using Fedora Core 6, aiglx/compiz with nVidia 6800, direct rendering enabled

Here is the output after removing the libs/libasound.so.2

no effect from deleting libs/libasound.so.2
I should add that the game was working before update.

I found the troubleshooting guide under planeshift/guide/en/ and I'll read that after breakfast.

I can verify this. I am getting the same error.  It looks like it's trying to execute a data file or some junk.

I tried grepping around for TemplateWeak and SEndIf and got this:

data/shader/snippets/shaderframework.inc
data/shader/snippets/shaderframework-cg.inc
data/shader/snippets/shadercond-tools.inc

By deleting the above files and moving the updater and friends back out of moved/ I was able to run the updater again but it's still not fixed.

General Discussion / Compliments from the Linux community
« on: September 24, 2006, 12:50:41 pm »
While I don't represent "The Linux Community" if such an entity exists, I often use Linux and I'm glad this game is linux friendly.  Doesn't say much for other games with giant multinational backing who claim they can't afford a linux port.  :@#\ liars.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that even the flash intro and banners look fine in the free open-source flash player, Gnash.   :detective:  I went ahead and put a little donation in the box. It's not much, but believe it or not, it's more than I spend on myself in in a week.  :innocent:

Linux Specific Issues / Re: Slow updater solution (maybe?)
« on: September 22, 2006, 12:29:06 am »
I believe the updater keeps going if you leave it alone. It just doesn't update the screen frequently. Seems like it completed when I left it running as I went to the discount barn.

Linux Specific Issues / updater is gosh darn slow
« on: September 19, 2006, 09:23:46 am »
I just had to say it  :-X

Update: I think I found out why it's so slow. It always times out out on mir1 and switches to mir2.
I might be able to fix it on my system by switching around the mirrors in updaterconfig.xml. Being in the US, the .cz mirror is very slow.

Happy to be able to test the game.

Hmm well sound worked ok when I first downloaded it on Fedora Core 5_64, then I got an update and sound didn't work for a while.  Sound worked again on update 0.3.016 and I'm getting another update now but the client is very slow to download.  Maybe it's busy today.  Will post back if sound quits working again.

Edit: Sound works but it peters out after a while. Not sure why yet.

Linux Specific Issues / Re: What OS/distribution you are using?
« on: September 19, 2006, 04:50:05 am »
Fedora Core 5, 64 bit edition.

Also got some friends trying it on windows.  \\o//

« on: September 17, 2006, 06:48:51 am »
Tracking down dependencies was difficult but not impossible on Fedora Core 5.

If you are using this distro you must get very familiar with rpm and yum

man rpm
man yum

Also yumex with the --forcei386 option if installing 32 bit apps on 64 bit system like mine.

General Discussion / Re: Planeshift vs World of Warcraft
« on: September 13, 2006, 06:48:26 pm »
We just have bad luck, that's all. There is a GM who is also a guild leader on hoarde side. We keep running into his friends... and killing them...  Anyways, if he's so mad at us that he would go through the trouble of banning us, then I'd say we've pretty much accomplished everything we wanted with WoW and it's time to move on.

It's true you can't really compare the two. One of them costs too much... :whistling:

General Discussion / Re: Planeshift vs World of Warcraft

I will tell you why Planeshift is better. After levelling to max level on so many different games, I'm tired of the whole fight-level thing. I'm way too experienced to play a commercial game without being accused of cheating. You think I'm lying? My team was banned from WoW not becuase we cheat but because their GMs don't understand the concept of skilled players... We don't have those problems on Planeshift because nobody cares if we one-drop a rat.

But enough bragging and whining about WoW.  I'm happy to have someplace where my friends and I can meet online and chat, and if there is something we don't like about the game there is a chance, maybe a small one, we could learn to become developers and fix it.

My sister is a very good artist and she is learning Autodesk.  I wrote a rock tunneling game in BASIC and everybody loved it.  I am a beginning C programmer and I've had some success following the nehe OpenGL tutorials and making my own scenes from USGS elevation data.  I went on to write a couple of C++ plugins for Moray to import and export .vrml, .dxf and .pov formats, create geodesic and eliptical domes of N verticies, random domes and tesselation. I have created a couple VRML avatars from scans of my face and clothing, using Spazz3d and made emote animations for them and had them responding to events within HANIM specification...  I realize that these aren't serious developer qualifications, but I like to play around with things and keep the midnight oil burning. My priorities are all messed up. I live in a box and drive a bicycle so I can afford the best top-of-the-line computers and fastest broadband they offer. I'm always researching and downloading the latest free development tools.  Someday I will make another game.

Linux Specific Issues / Re: Linux client still not available
« on: September 06, 2006, 08:05:41 am »
Cool. The first mirror works for me now (don't know about the others, saving bandwidth). Maybe I just had bad timing or there was some sort of outage between here and there on the days I checked.

the torrent still doesn't work (I don't think there's anything wrong with my bittorrent client since it seems to work on other sites)

Linux Specific Issues / Linux client still not available

Yo, I just thought I'd inform somebody that none of these links on the front page work.  I noticed this quite a while ago but I figured I'd give it a few weeks before I said anything. Will an older client work?
