Technical Help: IN GAME bugs (after loading world) / now thatsa some lag

I'm running slackware linux on my Compaq Presario V2000
I downloaded and updated the game fine, but after character creation, when I enter the world it is the most horrendous lag I have ever had...ever.
Now I have an ATI Radeon Xpress 200M with 128MB of Memory (with latest drivers), a 1.8 GHZ Mobile AMD Sempron Processor, and 885 MB of Free RAM (my swap partition is using more RAM than is needed so I can change that if that is the problem, just have been too lazy thus far)
Vertex buffer object is off, Adaptive veiwing is on, and load all maps and keep maps loaded are not selected.
Why am I getting such horrible lag?
