General Discussion / Re: The Ojafest!
« on: August 12, 2006, 10:35:03 pm »
Have the festival over the whole week end starting on Friday - then people running things can schedule them at any point they want - I don't want to read any "I have to work that day" posts it will be a nightmare to corrdinate - just post a general time table of events once you get commitments.

The dance contest using combinations of jump and sneak sounds cool as does the comidy acts - people can perform on the top of one of the levels - so even the dwarfs can see ;)

Those are two great points.

Public fighting is very rude, especially with all the x hits y messages.

Also maybe for RP, auto-accept challange setting needs to be chosen at player creation.  So it is one all the time for that character.  Just add a blood-thirsty career path - or beaten by parents history choice.

Why wait to set a date - just turn on your auto-accept RIGHT NOW!

Seriously, maybe players who have auto-accept on can have different colored name labels.  That way all the criminals can kill each other off much more quickly  ;)

Newbie Help (Start Here) / Re: unhelpful GM
« on: June 20, 2006, 04:56:37 am »
I've been playing for a while and still have trouble finding my way out of the Dark(sic) Realm.  One thing you can do is follow people, especially if they are running.  Nine times out of ten they will lead you out if you can keep up.

The GMs cannot teleport characters whenever they request it - we only do it when a character is stuck in game geometry and the command /unstick doesn't work. We also cannot give "spoilers" to players, which include exits, quests, items/merchants, etc. These are GM guidelines - because part of the adventure of the game is exploring on your own. Hadfael was doing his job.
I thought the intent of the DR is to dissuade people from taking death too lightly.  But in this case it is not working as intended.  Falling and then dying your first time playing would really stink.  Exploring DR is part of game, but not necessarily fitting for someone’s first day.  Rules are good, fairness is better, but flexibility is best.

lollie, ask around for help people are generally nice.  Or do a /who command and pick out a name from the forum, most of the regulars can come down and show you around a little.

Hope you will stick with the game – good luck.

Forget the number thing.

Just remove the names over the head and either keep track of people as you speak to them or add mouse overs to identify - then when skins come along the problem will be solved since people will be more identified.

RPers can just ask names of people they do not recognize rather then mouse over.

And then maybe someday it will make sense to keep track of which person has introduced themselves to which other person ...

How about starting with a couple of one-on-one\'s

followed by one or two pair fights

with a tag team fight between the men of laanx vs. Talad\'s warriors where only two combatents are allowed in the arena at once - if a combatant is able to get out the door before dying a new team member can enter to continue the fight

finally a grand one man standing fight in the end.

I agree with LigH, there should be a fee only for entering the combat.  Maybe next time some of the local townsfolk can help sponsor the winner?s money.

I would suggest the first group of contests should be setup a head of time, as much as possible.  Or at least a list of fighters should be made.  If RL or dinner interferes you move to the end of the list.  Once through the list if you are not available to fight you forfeit, possibly without refund.  Someone in role of organizer, should be specifically responsible to keep the list and the event progressing.  If you are thrown out during the fight the fight is forfeited and both players move to the end of the current list.  Once through the list a new list is made for the winners and the process is repeated.

There should be a referee that ignores PMs once the fight starts.  The referee should move the fight along just like they were breaking up fighters that lock arms.  The organizer can sound a bells at the end of the round or the fight.  The referee would encourage the fighters to fight correctly.

The grouping is a good idea for IC talking and can be used to govern the group.  But I think the PMs delayed this allot.  One person should be chosen in the PR role that will respond to outside communication.  If that does not work, drop the group idea and only use it for the organizers to communicate.  That way the crowd shouts and talks on the talk channel like normal.

I disagree with the idea of a judge panel.  I think the idea of a single judge (maybe the referee) to interpret the choice of the audience is appropriate.  I can see how the fact that it could become a popularity contest could be a problem, but since the goal is to try to judge RP it might be appropriate.  Choosing an unbiased panel in my mind is more difficult.

Nice try ? don?t give up.

How about something as simple as laying down like you were sleeping when you log out!  After some amount of time you would fade into the back ground and simply disaprear.

instead of having the just devs develope all the buildings, allow anyone who has the ability to write c++ design the buildings ...

You need to be a 3D artist to design houses, mansions, and castles.

I like the idea of a portal or even better a portal key (ala HP) to gain access to personal space.  When you wanted some company you could hand out portal key items to people that were only activated for a specified amount of time.

As you entered your house you would have to load the special room maps.  Others could join you by just loading the same maps via the portal keys.

Now if someone could start designing some rooms ?

Sorry Cha0s - The thread looked like it kinda petered out.  And I thought that news about an actual role-playing event was appropriate. ;)

Has anyone used webCalendar?

http://sourceforge.net/projects/webcalendar

\"WebCalendar is a PHP application used to maintain a calendar for a single user or an intranet group of users. It can also be configured as an event calendar.\"

A new forum catagory.

Instead of these going in general discussion under gameplay.  This would allow people to easily check and comment on activities and events.

If the suject names had the RL dates that would also be helpful I think.
