General Discussion / Re: Define Spoiling.
« on: December 15, 2006, 02:31:28 pm »
I think the issue lies with each individual character. Some characters may consider any outside help to be spoiling their journey, whereas other characters may decide that they need help in order to progress. I joined a guild because I found the experience of being in-game and figuring everything out, starting from scratch and finding my own way to be entirely too daunting. The help I recieve from my guild has enhanced my game experience, and meant that I've been a part of Planeshift longer than I might have if I had no help. If solutions and trainer lists etc. are posted in private, in defined areas, and not simply shouted out and made impossible to ignore, then it is up to ME to decide whether I access them or not. Therefore it is up to me (or my character) to decide what is 'spoiling' and what I dont want to look at, or what information will be helpful to me or my characters. Simply, everyone knows that information is out there, its just a matter of deciding whether you want to look for it or not.
I think that spoiling would be posting answers and lists in a place where people couldnt help but see them, so they had no choice but to be instantly inundated with the information. Anything that recquires joining a guild (which to my mind works, in this case, more like a union or co-operative) or actively ASKING someone is no longer spoiling, because you have seeked out the information yourself, that is, you have decided that you need the information in order to progress. As long as people have the choice of whether or not to see information, then any answers are, in my mind, not spoiling- answers to questions are helpful.
Based on my in-game experience so far I would go so far as to say that there is no spoiling in Planeshift at the moment. I say this because there are no maps available in game (apart form the library- but we all know how helpful that is!) and no-one is running around shouting about who trains sword past 30, or what to give a NPC to get a quest. Any information that could be considered to be spoiling has to be actively pursued, there is no chance that a person will accidently 'stumble upon' a complete list of trainers, or the looting potential of each NPC. I think that this is exactly as it should be, and I congratulate the forum moderators, GMs, developers, Guild leaders and every individual player for allowing characters to make up their own mind when it comes to what information they wish to access.

Mac OSX Specific Issues / Re: Bouncy, bounce, but wont open

OK, I tried everything in this thread and still no dice :-(
However, I did just have this problem with Shadowbane (yes! I am getting desperate!) and it was because a package wasn't being extracted correctly... or something. It got fixed by changing a setting in Stuffit Expander. I would like to know if the people having this problem are all running 10.3.9 on PowerPC's, and whether other people running the same are happy Planeshifters in game atm wondering what all the fuss is about... *sigh* It is nice to know I'm not the only one though and despite the obvious frustration of not being in game its actually really fun and educational to try and hash something like this out. I for one didn't even know what Terminal was before a couple of days ago! Now I can say things like 'yeah, I just reset my permissions in console and tried running the client, but no cigar.' Hehe. Never thought I would see the day :-) Anyway,  :offtopic: !
Dfryer, we all appreciate your work, so much so that we cant wait to get in game! I hope that you dont get uber frustrated or feel unappreciated. Kudos to all developers, moderators and GM's :-)

Well it says your a long time reader, But i dont think youv been paying attention very well.  X-/  ::| In alot of posts it says that you do not run the updater ONLY run the client.   :P

I know this, and I only tried to run the updater to see if it was a client only problem, but it seems I cant run either from the BitTorrent download. If you read my post you'll see that my problem is that I cant run either, not that I tried to run the updater first. Of course I read the forums, or I would have posted a stupid 'why wont my updater run' post. If anyone else has a problem with my lack of attention, perhaps I should ammend my question to;

Does anyone know what I can do about my client, which is not running, only bouncing and disapearing?

Skooty, do you actually have an answer to my problem, or did you post only to make me look like a dill?

Greetings, first time poster, long time reader   :surrender:

I downloaded the new version from BitTorrent and am currently downloading from the mirror to see whether theres a difference, but, after downloading and unpacking and copying to Applications, I try to run both the updater and the client (client first), the logo bounces up and down in the dock for a moment and then disappears. I've tried restarting and deleting and recopying the BitTorrent version, but it always does the same thing. I'm running it on a slow old Mac (933mhz) and am using 10.3.9. I've had a look through the forum, but have been unable to find anyone with the same problem. Should I just wait for the Mirror version to download, or is there something I can try in the mean time? :-\

I would  :love: some help!

I'm not that computer savvy  :-[  [Edit; even more embarrassed that this icon doesnt work... but I think it proves my point!]

Thanks in advance!

Olympias listens with head tilted for a few moments before striding quickly to Jayose to procure both pen and paper. She returns as quickly as intended and settles, albeit uncomfortably, on the ground. The rough surface texture of the ground scratches her soft turquiose skin. With confident, bold strokes she deftly completes an outline of the Kran and begins to fill the outline with words. It is simple word association, but it helps to develop character. Before ten minutes has passed the outline is filled with scrawlings and Olympias is satisfied that she understands the Kran better than when she started. Knowing that it will be some time before the questions of the gathered horde are answered, the Nolthrir settles down to repair her favourite long sword. She is looking forward to a quiet word with the infamous Kran and the possibility of expanding on her collection of epic adventures. Before she finishes with the weapon her mind has already wandered to the places he must have travelled and the people he must have seen. And then her thoughts drift to the way to tell the things he has seen that she hasn't, to make the people believe her. To spin the words so as to create a delicate cloth as all encompassing as the heavens, as wise as the priests and as bright as the crystal.
