The Mongols and ancient Chinese used silk as an "armour" because if the wearer is struck with an arrow, the silk does not tear but wraps around the arrow head. Although it does not prevent the arrow entering the flesh, it reduces tearing of the flesh and allows the arrow to be (relatively) easily removed without causing further injury, because the barbed arrow head cannot dig in. So cloth CAN be used as armour. (There are no ranged weapons yet of course
