PvP is alive and well. Just step out of a city and insult someone. You'll get the picture.
It takes skill, training, dedication and practice to be proficient at it.

Complaint Department / Re: Gugrontid Blockade
« on: March 26, 2008, 01:38:08 am »
I have to agree, stop the bickering. Start being constructive.
In any event, the attack on Gugrontid was a test from which much was learnt.
That means we have work to do.
I'ld really enjoy the RP and strategies that combat groups would bring to the game.

I suspect that it is not in the Octarch's interest to punish blindly those who ignored the laws of Yliakum.
At least thats how my character views it.
There should be punishment, however,  and those that contributed to the raid should also suffer.

If law was applied to the letter in this unfortunate event, then raids might occur more often (bannished and isolatited barbarians on the loose). [ Oh my! i just called Izzy a Barbarian! ]

@Mordraugion
you are right on the button: You can't fight cloaked.

Lets have fun.

> Shh, your not supposed to tell  ;)

Tell what? You speak as if it were a secret. Izzy only re-confirms what -we- already knew.

@Izzy
Why, why, why is it that most beleive that the defense of Gugrontid was carried out by "good people'?
Good people often dislike the structure and nastyness required to put up such a defense.
We need to have a serious discussion about the difference between:
good vs evil
... and ...
evil vs darkness

@all (officially labelled the Pest Control Brigade)
Kaylain salutes all those, be they evil or good, that challenged the fog of war.
The criminals will be caught.

Also, i'm organizing some group-assist duels (composed of teams of 3 or 5 players each) in order to conduct and succeed at skirmish warfare on a medium scale.
The goal is not to roleplay mass-killings, we have a duty: to protect Yliakum's cities at any cost.

I reinstalled twice, once to C:\Program Files\ and once to E:\ but I have the same issue.  I don't think my video driver is bad because I can play Bioshock with no problems.  Are there debug versions built of the exe's that might shed light on this?

For the problem related to msjava.dll installation, consult:
http://www.java.com/en/download/help/error_1722.xml
and make sure you uninstall all traces of the previous JRE as suggested

the c:\...\username\planeshift location appears empty but its not, thats a hidden folder, so show hidden objects.

come on, folks....i'm truly looking for adventure and roleplaying - and find very little of either.

If you want cake, you need to make it first. I've had plenty of cake.

« on: March 11, 2008, 02:30:07 pm »
automatically moved you close enough to attack
All weapons have a delay which varies with its speed parameter. If you study your weapon(s) appropriately, you can trigger and let that delay pass before you stand the chance of getting hit.

why would u want to do less than max damage?
Because maximum damage is like playing a team sport with no defense or goaltender. A Bloody attack is an option in certain situations but using it exclusively is a gamble, and not a good one.

a window opened automatically to loot from if the body has loot
A 'body' that has just been struck down *is* already in focus and selected, just hit a /loot KB shortcut
Imagine if a window pops up and you have a dozen other attackers with you as target.

Can you explain excatly what problem(s) you are having and maybe the operating system and mouse involved?
The mouse sensitivity, as is, far surpasses anything i can throw at it.
It regularly makes me dizzy with stock settings (Linux, USB cordless optical mouse).

General Discussion / Re: Introductions
« on: March 04, 2008, 04:45:29 am »
I'ld suggest a concept where one might have the choice to go incognito or become anonymous to all but guild members and buddies. Such a toggle would need to be transparent from both an OOC and IC perspective. So that when a character does switch on a hidden-identity flag, he/ she/it is still recognized by guild members and buddies - albeit as one who is hiding their identity for whatever reason (and the same character is then displayed to all others as completely anonymous until an IC exchange occurs, if any). let the players deal with introductions IC then.

Extroduce vs introduce? You've seen me before but never like this.
Just some thoughts,

I had a pretty vivid image in my tiny brain after reading some excerpts about Kra town. The result is so beautifull and immersive that my char is now looking for a room there to spend time (that and prospect for some of those gems). Wow, this place is gourgeous.
The Gods like us, surely.

bows down to the Devs and looks up with awe and admiration.

this upgrades terible lol you cant get in or it keeps crashing and on top of that they did it over a weekend so noone coud go on

The teams have jobs and/or school to go to during week. I'ld rather they fix the issues carefully than be pressed into providing dubious fixes/hacks. Let them work the issues through meanwhile.  Be patient.

General Discussion / Re: Do enkies purr?
« on: March 02, 2008, 01:13:53 am »
I don't remember Enkidukai NPC's purring when I ask them for a quest, so I don't think they do.

You are assuming that a form of humanoid can't purr, but they can. The predisposition of a creature like a Menki or Fenki may well have them purring. I know at least a few that will purr on command if fed a few fishies. Since begging for a quest is 'a demand' or imposition then i hardly expect an Enkidukai to begin purring at that point.

Are we to start dictating what other races may or may not do based on what isn't part of the settings?
I've seen enough Enkis purring to be convinced that they in fact do purr.
Thats good enough for me. I'ld further suggest that its a common trait.

Its quite far fetched to suggest that they don't when you consider there are psuedo-demons running around that supposedly blow dark smoke out their nostrils and ears + consume souls, all of which is based on forum posts and not submitted by the settings team.

./psclient.bin: symbol lookup error: libs/libvorbisfile.so.3: undefined symbol: vorbis_synthesis_idheader

I checked the libs folder and the file is there

Assuming you already have libvorbis installed (look for libvorbis.so.3 in your /usr/lib/ or /usr/lib64/ directory) you can try moving or renaming the one in Planeshift's Libs directory. Worked for me.

@Shadowmeph
If you plan to install Planeshift for a specific user only, don't install it in the /opt directory - which requires elevated priveleges, install it in your /home/username where it'll create and populate a folder labelled PlaneShift on installation.

@Xordan
Thanks for the hard work, you guys glow in a blue hue.

General Discussion / Re: Think NPCs are dumb? Click here!
« on: March 01, 2008, 08:24:24 pm »
here is something I took out of my log it could be me asking the questions wrong or it is the NPC you be the Judge

Quote
(19:27:16) Nyshyn Klannarr says:  You want something from me, do you?
(19:28:09) Soylentshadow says: what do you have?

Put yourself in the shoes of Nyshyn for a moment. She's busy examining artifacts and ruins with a specific purpose in mind. [ Once you dig into the Yliakum settings a little, you'll realize that what she does is crucial to her existance, even her sister follows the exact same path. ]

You walk up, disrupt her tedious work and proceed to demand she tell you what she has available. I doubt she'll start giving you a breakdown of the contents in her inventory or give you the choice of what you shall do in order to satisfy *your* desires. Would it make sense that she should respond to the last question above if you were to respond with "maybe"?

Perhaps you might consider that in fact its your character that might serve her, assuming you provide a clear intention that you are interested. Imagine the nightmare, given the dialog above, if she *did* only respond to the key phrase "what do you have?".

If i ask you "do you understand what i'm trying to say with this comment?" and you respond something else than yes or no, you can expect me to follow your response, i'm sentient (although thats debateable). If you need an NPC to carry out a conversation about subject X or Y, you have to do it programmatically. Just collecting a primitive boolean response is task enough, now consider writing an AI that would use fuzzy logic to determine what you are attempting to say. Each NPC would then require its own fuzzy logic. [ Its been suggested that a super-computer -may- reach a state close to human intelligence around 2020. You would need 100's of super-computers to provide 100's of sentient NPC's ]

If an NPC asks you a specific question where a boolean value yes or no is expected, the best bet is to respond with a boolean value. Why? because they aren't there to serve you. You may think they are but thats an illusion.

General Discussion / Re: Yliakumised Literary Forms.
« on: February 17, 2008, 04:44:22 am »
I think that what is already in the library is relevent (good job, btw).
One might consider adding rituals, songs, biographies and more scientific works, or thesis. All of which can add substance and concrete tidbits to the setting of Yliakum. The bottom line is that information and folklore present in these works will most likely end up used in roleplay (if not implemented). As always, when is a subject fictitious, theoretical, based on innuendo or beliefs and when is a subject fact? There has to be a distinction between fact and fiction. Not to mention that what is 'fact' needs to be consistant.

You could perhaps mix song and ritual and give it a formal name like 'ablution' or 'solemnisation'. With each race or religion having their own versions (a vigil, praying, sacrifice, marriage, death, birth). A short historical journal detailing what major events that have occured in the known world might also be appropriate (a chronological record, ie: eclipses). Memoirs, Thanatopsis, liturgy, anecdote, legend, consuetude, habitude, praxis all come to mind. Again, some works are factual, others are fictitous (until proven otherwise).

While arts as entertainment would add realism, the covered topics would best serve the settings. So as far as what works might be written by Yliakum's citizens, i'ld suggest Essays and journals at least partly based on non-fiction.

Good writers: probably Londris because of the content. I guess that pretty well says what i'm thinking.

Complaint Department / Re: Levels?
« on: February 16, 2008, 06:36:29 am »
How do i see my level and track when I'm leveling. And how do I do this? The game has enormous potential, btw.

Let me throw in a radical idea.
Find yourself a trainer(s) within the world of Yliakum (not NPC trainers).
While some like to state that they are a level x in sword, level y in Crystal Way or whatever, whats important is balance. What is balance? The answer to that depends on what you plan to do with your character(s). So essentially, what you seek is wisdom, not a how-to guide.

There is also an undeniable 'level' associated with an RP'd worlds like this one. It doesn't show up on any skill stat. Yet it's value is priceless and virtually fathomless. Over and above any single statistic or group of statistics. Instead of spending cycle in and cycle out training blindly to increment your stats: consider making alliances, brothers and sisters, friends, associates. Not necessarily in-guild either, in case you do belong to one.

Think about it. You can spend an entire day levelling a given skill by maybe 2 levels after considerable effort and cost. Or you can gain 50 or more by simply associating with the right person(s). Then, if you require advice or guidance you get a little wisdom instead of plain specs.
