LOL Alternatively you can always use my trick (i'm a bit old fashioned at times given I started when C64's were new) stick a "normal" (you remeber the glass and mercury ones?) thermometer in the bottom of the case and wait 30 mins and read it if it is over 40 degrees Celcius (104 F) then it's too hot try running with out the case side, or install some additional fans.

I currently run 6 in my 3 yr old thing and in winter the CPU fan shuts down coz it gets too cold :oops:

yes, which quicker and more stable?

Generaly speaking with almost any app...

Quicker = you compile on your system with optimistaions for your arch type, Kernel Version and hardware...

More Stable = Official released binary as it has been built with a general range of arch types, hardware / kernels in mind...

look at the gentoo user's description from the link in my sig then you decide what you as a gentoo user MUST do! ;)

And btw, thats a shockingly ironic username :P

LoL I saw the post this morning (i'm in Aus) and thought it a joke at first then realised not, I then thought the same as Idoru, BUT didn't want to comment ...

Admittedly I do not un-equip anything when mining.

But the way I see it Leather boots and gloves along with a pick are valid minning equipment...

My swords I do de-quip when going off to mine as traditionally speaking a minning pick should be a 2H weapon...

I have noticed alot of posts tend to be vauge on whats been done to solv an issue and what the actual issue is, also people don't tend to include thier system specs.

When posting please try to include everything below or as much as possible as this will help us to help you...

OS:
OS VERSION:
(in the case of windows) Service Pack #:
CPU:
CPU Speed:
RAM:
GFX CARD:
GFX Card Memory:
ERROR Numbers (if any):
Breif Description of the problem:
What steps you have taken to fix it:

6
OS:Microsoft Windows xp
OS version:Media cent Edition version 2002
Service Package #: 2
CPU: 3.00 GHz
RAM:512 mb
GFX CARD: RADEON 9200 [RADEON 9200 sec]
No error numbers. The anti virus program I run is PCtools Anti virus, also PCtools Spyware Doctor.
I am trying to load my charector when either my computer freezes or the whole thing shuts down.
There is no firewall attached with my antivirus or my spyware program, I also went into the firewall and allowed Planeshift to run without the firewall affecting it.

ok that actually helps a bit... BTW you said earlier...

I have closed all of my other software programs other than my antivirus program.

well we now know thats not entirely true, you didn't mention the firewall program nor the spyware program...

I will not ever tell any one to turn off a firewall, that would be stupid, the spyware and anti-virus however can be turned off during game play as we know the game is virus and spyware free along with it's servers, so try shutting them down as-well leaving only windows, planeshift and the firewall running... BTW that includes those "bonus" aka "bogus" features that come with printer drivers like the HP PSC as they often cause frustration to you.

*Note when I said all programs I really meant ALL programs not just the ones you think you don't need... Programs can be re-started if not you can tell the PC to re-boot if you really need that annoying little tool in the bottom right corner*

I also am waiting for the following answers;
1 ) Has the anti-virus changed recently or had an update (other than for virus definitions)
2 ) When was the last time you ran a Test Disk and De-frag on the HDD?
Is the HDD full?

    Scan disk can be done by;
    -->  Click on "Start"
    --->  Click on "My Computer"
    ----> Right Click on your hard drive (usually called "Local Disk (C:)")
    -----> Left click on "Properties"
    ------> click on the tab called "Tools"
    -------> Under the "Error Checking" section click on the "Check Now" button and follow the instructions re-booting if necesary

    A Defrag can be done by;
    -->  Click on "Start"
    --->  Click on "My Computer"
    ----> Right Click on your hard drive (usually called "Local Disk (C:)")
    -----> Left click on "Properties"
    ------> click on the tab called "Tools"
    -------> Under the "Defragmentation" section Click on the "Defragment Now" button and wait for that to complete

    To check how full the HDD is;
    -->  Click on "Start"
    --->  Click on "My Computer"
    ----> Right Click on your hard drive (usually called "Local Disk (C:)")
    -----> Left click on "Properties"

    There it will display the free sapce and used space, note windows doesn't like having less than 20% free when running as
        this reduces it's "virtual memory" which will then cause problems...

    Also Turn off disk compression if that is enabled as that will also cause problems and lag in loading / running programs.

The Radeon 9200 is an older card and not likely to be a factor unless the drivers are out of date... best thing to do is if you have catalyst installed use it to up-date... If not go to the ATI site (now part of AMD) and get and install the latest drivers for your windows version...

What kind of CPU is it you have 3GHz is just it's speed setting I was more or less after intell Centrino / p4 / whatever they're named or AMD Duron / AthlonXP / Athlon XP 64 / Turion 64 / whatever they're named, also if the CPU supports Hyperthreading, is it enabled?

I created a cat-person that is apparently too retarded to tell how strong an enemy is. Shouldn't feline instinct count for something...?

No, does a baby know anything of strength or charisma or intelligence? no, they know only love warmth and food... the rest is learned like everything else in the world real or imaginary you must learn it either by being taught or through trial and error!

If you're running *Ubuntu - yes. Most other distributions don't have sudo activated by default.

True, but there is always "su"

Not usually unless it has become un-seated (has you computer been opened and someone played with the video card?)

I still say most likely software...
What anti-virus program are you using?
Has it changed recently or had a update (other than for virus definitions)
Has it got a built in firewall? Has PS been allowed to run in it?

When was the last time you ran a Test Disk and De-frag on the HDD?
Is the HDD full?

Also it would help to know what kind of system we are dealing with...

Please always include...

With out actually knowing what is going on it will be rather hard to pin point the problem... can you be more specific?

One option you may try is to close ALL other programs running in the background (including the system tray) to eliminate any software conflicts...

What has changed on your end? (the client hasn't changed in some months...)

11
I'm incredibly confused by this..... so do I not run my updater until this issue has been resolved or do I need to do something with my graphics card or drivers before I run it?

Correct you DO NOT run the up-dater as this is more likely to cause problems until such a time that they release PlaneShift Version 0.3.19...

The only thing really mentioned above about graphic cards is that you need OpenGL support, most video cards these days have that...

Things I like about the game...

1) The forum I spend more time here than playing due to a general lack of free time lately :(
2) The Hall Of Mirrors Effect (I have missed this in the last two weeks something must have changed coz i just don't see it any more)
3) Mining though boring for conversation it is a good way to earn some quick cash
4) non-combatative leveling system... I like gaining exp and not having to "gain a level" like it's normaly done (combat specific) in this game you can "level up" without any combat at all :)
5) Multi-platform I am trying to get IRL friends to play it coz of this as I stick to Linux and they stick to Mac OS or worse Windoze(ZZZzzzz) (off topic side issue... Why is it that I can run a VM session of windows faster  and with greater stability than with it being installed natively?)
6) RPers and nor OOCers
7) RP not PK
8 ) Dwarves
9) Death Realm

I'm sure this list will grow in time...

EDIT: fixed the error that made 8) not 8 )

Most  importantly what classes we have here, i am hoping a Necro well close to it.
Dont know what Necro is?? But there are several races to pick from, and we dont really have classes in the traditional sense eg, palladins, warriors, hunters. but you are free to play any role you like (provided it is within the settings)
/quote]

FYI: Necro = Necromancer, A raiser of the dead who uses his pets to fight / tank while he sits back and either roots then nukes or regens mana...

This game is not currently set up to be able to use this style of play :( in time maybe? Necro is a VERY cool class to play esp. if you like to play a more traditional style of "evil" character... they are to a shadow knight what a enchanter is to a paladin.

Every fantasy MMO looks like WoW, or maybe WoW looks like every fantasy MMO ;) They're the biggest out there

For now... That was the case for Everquest for a very long time...

but PlaneShift is definitely not a WoW clone. We encourage heavy doses of roleplay.

Oh snap...

right click planeshift.bin when logged as root and go to permissions. Then tick the box "allow planeshift.bin to be run as a program".
It worked for my mandriva 2007.

hmmm yes that works in some Linux Distro's but not all, What I was pointing at is...

Quote from: Xordan In the above link I gave
You will need to 'chmod +x PlaneShift_CBV0.3.017.bin' after downloading.

Which will work on ALL Distro's!
