Wish list / Re: external stats - web based
« on: March 21, 2007, 03:43:07 am »
i understand that Numbskull, this is why i think maybe there should be an option in-game of "export my stats" and also why I don't think it should show everything, just some things, for instance Joe bloggs is good at crafting swords, he has level X in swordmaking, so other guild members know who to goto if they need a weapon, and bertie bassett is good at making ingots and stocks, so sell him your ores, i don't think there should be any stats available that would make the player vulnerable to attack from another player, for instance HP level, and sword/axe/dagger skill etc.

I also don't think it should be active for all players, and by default for a player, should be set as "don't show my stats" so if the player wishes, then their stats could be exported.

the main issue on this, is when there is multiple servers, and a few thousand "active" players, within guilds that all want their stats exported, the server load on that might not be too healthy.

It was more of a though than anything else, just to see other peoples views on it.

Wish list / Re: System of progression that makes sense.

I do kind of like this idea, it makes it slightly more exciting, but a couple of things

my apologies first if they have already been covered, but i just thought i would post my thoughts anyway

ok, with the aptitude, maybe it could be like child to adult, for instance, you start out well, learning quickly, and as you progress through the game you learn slower, (though never to the extent of not learning or learning so slowly that there isn't any point, this would just cause character re-creation) that way everyone has the same chance at the start, and throughout, and then skills that you practice often, you would learn quicker than those that you rarely practice. for instance, if your a swordsman you can learn new sword skills quicker than say picking up an axe, or cooking the Sunday roast.

also, I don't think you should HAVE to have training you should pick up the skill without it, by practicing, but this would take longer than getting training on that skill maybe 70% slower without training. like in the real world, if someone shows you how to make a pot, you can go away and pick it up relatively easy, but if no one shows you, you can still pick up that skill, just first few times its going to end in spatters of clay all over the walls, but eventually you would pick it up.

overall though, i think it is a well thought out system.

Wish list / external stats - web based

I have an idea concerning the stats and skills,

as a guild you are urged to have a website for that guild, somewhere to chat to guild members and so on, which is all very good, and at current we can tap into the planeshift site and see who is online, I have written a script on our guild site that takes the information into an XML parser and only shows members from our guild.

What would be great though, is if we could have some kind of XML or RSS based stats/skills system, so we could pull out stats of an individual player into the website. and maybe out of the guild system too. at current we have our guild levels on our site, and this has to be updated manually, so if someone is premoted, we then have to login to an admin panel on the website, and update the players level there, if we could pull that from an RSS feed it would be much better, and if we could do that with player skills and stats, again, we could then show those on the guild site - I also don't think everything should be shown, and I don't think anyone should have access, for instance, it should maybe only show info for members of the same guild as you, so that this way, you can only display information you want to display on the guild site, otherwise you may get people looking at your stats, and then trying to challenge you because of them.

Its just a thought I had, so that we could maybe display information about guild members on guild sites without having to manually update them all the time, as some things go up quite quickly so the guild site would be outdated in no time atall.

Wish list / Re: qt4 integration
« on: March 21, 2007, 02:38:28 am »
I had KDE 4.... I'm back on Gnome

I feel at home in GTK, I'm not that keen on QT.

I think it should be as it is, there is no reason to change it, QT is too overloaded, its coming close to the .net stuff with too many library's that aren't used.
