I like the inventory when the items are small because you can fit many items in the window but on the downside you can't appreciate the look of each item. To remedy this would it be possible for the invenory item to enlarge a bit temporarily if you scroll over it or click on it. It may be best for the enlargement not to be too drastic so the sorrounding items arn not blocked out. Love the UI it will look great ingame!

General Discussion / Re: How did you find planeshift?
« on: November 29, 2007, 04:08:49 am »
I was looking for a mac mmorpg's to play and as the list wasn't very long I soon came apon Planeshift. What I found under the multimedia tab on the main page impressed me. (the game idea, races ect.)  I soon found myself downloading the game and playing the game.

The problem mentioning that once you enter the game a new player will ask "ok what do I do now?" is a problem to consider. I think before leaving the tutorial the last npc you meet should give you a list of npc to talk to and where to find them. This small list will contain npc's that have a few easy quests to start out with and thier quests are a good introduction to what the game will be like. Either that or the last npc in the tutorial should tell you to talk with someone as part of a quest that is begun as soon as you spawn in Hydlaa. (part of the quest will be finding them and talking to them so you will not have the majority or any quest info till you do so.)

A good idea and if done right it would realy add more realism to the game. Acouple problems may need to be worked over one of them is that when an npc tells you to find another npc by saying somthing like "Go speak to NPCNAME in Hydlaa" it may be hard especially for new players to run around greeting every npc till the find the right one. This feature should also not be a top priority, in fact it would best be delayed as other things that are being worked oon right now are of greater importance.

Thanks for the advice Kieve. I do have blender which I am not very good at yet but it's good to know that I can use it to export Cad files to CAL3D. After I have gotten much better at drawing on blender I may consider switching over from AutoCad to it.

I agree that it might be better not to have progression points. I also think gaining progression points fighting and then using them to get better at crafting is not a good setup. I am going to kill a rat so that in doing so I will learn how to weave a basket. How realistic is that?

Anyway about Krans having emotion keep this in mind. Whenever a fantasy race is created we almost always give them very human traits. Think of each species more as aliens (I know this is a reach but do it for the desired effect). If each "alian" race develops on thier own evolutionarily, socially, cultrally and technologically why does one race Have to posses a very human characteristic? I just read a book that had an alien race that reproduced from spores so they had no emotions and very little free will. In fact they did not feel pain. You may say thats outrageos how can any creature function well without a basic HUMAN trait? The aliens did not need emotions because of how they reproduced so on a evolutionary standpoint emotions gave the aliens no edge so emotions were never developed.
I know this example isn't of somthing in planeshift but it still, at least in my mind, helps to iluminate why an organisim dosn't have to have certain attributes.

Wish list / Re: More In-Depth Character Creation
« on: November 28, 2007, 10:11:24 pm »
One problem about this theary. After succesful cross breedding a new offspring would be created except it may be so diffrent from current races that it would be its own race. An example of this is the Diaboli. After two of these "New Races" were created then they could reproduce together and create a new mix of the two even more diffrent than any of the grandparents. What I am saying is if this were totally realistic an almost unlimited amout of races could be created. Just look at dogs although thier in one race cross breeding two diffrent kinds of dogs yields a new and unique one that has many traits from thier parents but is very diffrent at the same time. Hope I hav'nt been rambling the whole time and make some sense.

Good ilistrated story \\o//. I have not seen that many of them on the forums. Like your first drawing of your alter ego as well. For some reason I like him better without strips but thats just my opinion.

Good Idea \\o//. It would be cool to have say a legend or story about a legendary weapon that would be extremly hard to find. Then you could get hints to if it was real and its location from the book. Not enough to find it though, we wouldnt want it to easy by blatently stating it. There may be numerous hints and rumers in the world of Planeshift about these good items or treasure's. I think it would set new meaningto the game and be really neat to set out on a quest that may take very long to find one of these valuable items or treasure. Not only would it encourage reading and learning from all the npc's and books but it would also require a great deal of exploration.

In another game I played (Eve online) you could sett skills for your character to learn and while you were away, even when the computer was of your character would be training. This would be good for people who cant get on all the time. I think it would only be realistic for some skills like if you where learning knowledge from say an alchemy book. I am not sure if it would be good or realistic to allow combat  skills to be trained while offline. The upside of this is that you would have a higher crafting lvl, and thus crafting would be promoted as apposed to just grinding it out by killin monsters and looting them.

I would say science or crafting but then I remember all the time I have wasted trying to tell an npc what I have done or ask what needs to be done ect. Although this isn't a huge fun factor it makes gamplay more enjoyable (or should i say less frustating) and makes the game more realistic. By the end it shouldn't feel as if we are talking to very dumb robots.
Although this sounds a bit harsh massive kudos to the dev team cus the way npc dialog in PS is set up os Awsome! \\o//
