Hmm, so even if the character does accept the existence of gods in planeshift, but doesn't follow them, are they still irrational crazy Athiests?

Games and 'realism' are not to be in the same room together.

Games and 'believability' are.

Believability is key.

Realism is destructive.

Technical Help: IN GAME bugs (after loading world) / A handful of dust.
« on: August 24, 2010, 02:07:00 pm »
So I recently decided to try my hand at crafting. I did all the quests from trasok got myself a bunch of iron ore, trained metallurgy and stuck the working with with stock book into my mind slot and off I went.

I put three pieces of ore into the furnace. I got 'you are not sure what will happen'
Somewhere between five and ten minutes later they all turned to dust.

I was told they would turn to molten metal.

Nope.

Can someone enlighten me on what is going wrong here, or is it just broken?

I don't know, madness could be pretty fun to RP if done correctly.

Yes, but too many people claim IC madness and then use it as an excuse to act like idiots. I'd rather see people picking a genuine disorder and play it out realistically than run around abusing the /shout command and deliberately annoying people.
I see that kind of madness on the bus all the time, though XP Abuse of the shout command, rambling incoherent nonsense, etc, etc. I'd say leave the shout command alone though, just keep it as a 'say', but there are plenty of whacked out people who do actually seem to fit that description...

As far as the game not being properly beta tested goes ... It is !
Guess what ? Your one of the testers :)

Fair point, I guess then that it's confusing having a beta... for a beta.

We're solidly working on the gameplay and balance for the next couple months.

This honestly makes me very happy.

Also, as far as RP rules go, there really can't be a way to enforce it. I feel as long as people don't go outside the setting, keep it within the bounds of their character and capabilities, just generally be sensible, it all works out ok.

The back of that looks better than the front, the front kinda reminds of some strange Enki/dwarf hybrid. Needs to be wider I think, but it's a cool idea.

PS already has the gameplay immersion handled through it's RP rules, now to get the pretty graphics.

Personally I really don't think that cuts it, to be perfectly honest.

Normal maps for the fur could possibly work; I already joked about the wooden glossy chestnut hair of e.g. Ylians or Stonebreakers, they could possibly use some wisps too.
Better yet, there are several mercenaries in the arena who are kinda golden coloured and actually shine.

If anyone's interested I think that is a nice insight into the kind of thing this thread might be alluding to.

that's kind of an opinion, boaal. plus it's irrelevant.

Fair point, but I'll back it up with personal experience and the experience of many other people too. I browse the Unity showcase forums a lot, I  think the engine is pretty sweet, making multiple terrain tiles is aggravating since they don't start off at the same place/levels or mirror, I suppose,  would be a better word so it's really hard to align them, but I digress. Some of the time you'll find a demo level, which looks quite amazing  considering that it's usually made by one guy. but these levels, pretty as they are, usually hold me for at most two minutes. If there's nothing but pretty scenery it gets pretty boring pretty fast.

This is the same reason that many people are starting to get aggravated with the amount of 'spectacle' games on the market. Games that feature very detailed, in depth, exciting graphics, but only offer 2-5 hours worth of gameplay in the entire game. It's too little of the core aspect: the game. I love exciting, brilliant graphics as much as the next guy, at the same time I enjoy AI:UFO, and that game has, to be fair, crap graphics! Same reason why Dwarf Fortress and Nethack are still very much noted and commented on as 'deep', 'replayable', by loads of people even though they are ascii based games. Diablo II is another example, people love that game and it was made how long ago? Graphics like that nowerdays make people laugh. That's why people are making games like "Dins Curse" and "Torchlight" in an attempt to bring it into the 21st century. Starcraft too, loved to death for it's balance.  Same reason why Achaea, a MUD still has several hundred players online at any time, even thought it's text based.

I know this is getting way off the point, but I do feel a need to stress the 'gameplay over graphics' aspect of gaming.

I think the only way you could make Enki fur is to bump map them. Adding real time fur would destroy the game. I don't know who the modellers are, but as far as I know, to bump map you could just port the original models into blender and use the sculpting tool to add the details. I forget how it works from there, but I've done a bit of 3D modelling, also been watching the overgrowth development blog and there's something about it on there, although admittedly they're using Mudbox to sculpt rather than blender. Still, with the new Crystal space engine update, if it's enabled, then this would be the way to add Enki fur.

Yeah, if you ever played new builds of games, when they aren't properly beta'd, then the code is usually kinda scratchy. It'll presumably get better in time.
