Wish list / A topic that probably has been done to death
« on: April 29, 2003, 09:43:47 pm »
That\'s right PvP... c\'mon you knew what the topic was deep down...

Anyway... there\'s a game called Underlight (i\'m not going to post the url cause that would be rude) and this game and it\'s creators have done PvP in the best way I think I have seen in any MMORPG.

There are 8 houses, each house has a specific role play and some of these role plays go directly against another houses role play or beliefs. This has caused lots and lost of tension in the game (role played tension) Now there are also beliefs of people who do NOT belong to houses (you can join a house or not, it\'s your choice) These differences in beliefs also create role played tension. The devs hire volunteer GM (game masters) to roam about the game monitoring what happens, and adding to the verious role plays. One of their jobs is to monistor PvP making sure that if someone is killed that they are kill (or collapsed in the game) for a valid, role played reason. There are ways to report pk\'ing and one report will not do.. there has to be several reports of the same reason on what ever person is responsible. Also, there were sancutaries where PvP was NOT possible and there are storylines behind them too as of why they are sancutaries and why you can\'t kill people there. Once you left you were at your own risk so to speak.

The GM\'s were directly involved in the game and it\'s storyline which is something else I dont see in any mmorpg\'s these days. I think most of you know where i\'m coming from and where this is leading. GM\'s should be hired voluntarily to monitor things, and make sure the game is running smoothly, from outside the game AND from inside. GM and Dev presence in a mmorpg are huge morale boosters. Knowing that we can roam about the city and about the land outside the city without real fear of grief\'rs, is comforting at the very least. Knowing that they will be dealt with is also just as comforting. There are ways to monitor PvP and make it fun for everyone if people are willing to spend the time to do so.

Anyway that\'s my shpiel,
