Linux Specific Issues / Re: Gentoo ebuilds

.4.00 client will _not_ connect to the current server.

as i said in my previous post i guessed it would not connect due to it not been updated, but seeing as the updater pulled 0.4.01 from the server prior to the segfault, i thought there may have been a problem with that ebuild and a quick fix to the cause of the segfault.

hi there,
Caarrie is right,
i'm the maintener of the ebuilds but zugaina don't update them often, so you should better download them as the topic told in one of the solutions,
i hope zugaina'll update them soon,
see you

ah thanks for the reply, as i said in my previous post im using the ebuilds linked to this thread with no problem, was just curious about the zugaina overlay since layman works better with portage 2.2_rc3  rather than having PORTDIR_OVERLAY in make.conf which does not play well together at the moment, i will have a look on the bugzilla page see if its reported / needs reporting etc..but anyway as i said, im using the ebuilds linked to this thread with no problems, the previous post was just out of curiosity.

take care.

out of curiosity, who maintains the ebuilds for planeshift on zugaina overlay, because the latest ebuild dont seem to work for me( 0.4.00-r2 ) . the previous release did.
This release the updater would fail on segmentation fault  and the client would not connect to the server, yet i could ping the server, and the server.xml file was fine so i guess i could not connect due to not being up to date enough. though your ebuilds that are linked to here work as expected ( 0.4.01-r1940 ), updater works and no problem connecting to the server.

i think mouse trails like described at the begining of the thread can be caused by having the hardware cursor on if you have hw_cursor in device section comment that out and try adding Option "sw_cursor"

yea im trying to think, cos i had the same error what is in those pics a couple years ago, but cant remember how i fixed it and im sure it was something to do with ATI, though i could be wrong, ovbiously PS being the only thing effected it seems the likely source, but i would not rule everything else out just yet.
i tried playing around with some settings in PS and xorg.conf on my laptop that uses ati but could not reproduce it,
im guessing with fedora 9 its xorg-server 1.3 and ATI 8.5 thats what im using on my distro, with 2.6.25 kernel. when i installed PS on my box the only thing it called for was openal the latest drivers from ATI are 8.6 i have not tested does at all but release notes state a few coruption fixes. (they seem to be updating windows and linux at the same time now days.) if i remember anything i will post back or if i manage to reproduce the error myself.

i know the first one is for 2D but these are what i turnt off in my xorg.conf because they play a part in performance and are new features as of 8.5

Code: [Select]
"XAANoOffscreenPixmaps"    "on"

Code: [Select]
Section "Extensions"
       Option "Composite" "Enable"
       Option "RENDER"  "Enable"
EndSection

of course i left Option "DRI" in place because with out it there would be no direct rendering

why are you running as root? you dont do that in linux.

*lol* I did that to ensure it had full privileges for the test, though, I did try with an un-privileged account and same thing happened. So, it made no difference really. It was rather naughty of me.

Last test before I pack it in... I took notice of this error...

*********************************WARN_ONCE*********************************
File r300_mem.c function r300_mem_alloc line 225
Ran out of GART memory (for 1048576)!
Please consider adjusting GARTSize option.
***************************************************************************

So? I tried to modify my xorg.conf and added this...

Option "GartSize" "64"

was it previously set to the stated memory size of your graphics card? if not you should set it to that and test it.

all went well i did not have to do anything apart from give ownership to /opt/planeshift

i think logically  the distance the data has to travel from the user to the server will effect ping time, the closer to the server the less the data travels making its trips shorter hence a lower ping, but a bad connection can throw all that out the window,
i get the same ping times and live in the UK i run PS on Gentoo Linux 32bit the only time i have had the problem that you speak of is when the server is on the way down and you kind of get trapped in your own little secluded world where the only thing you can do is run... ah now i see the nightmare XD

but come to think of it that cant be your problem because you are logging in where the problem i described is when you are logged in and every one vanishes but loggings would be down.. so eh.. nothing to see here move along   :whistling:
