I installed the 0.4.00 and then 0.4.01 on top of that and the configuration problem was solved. now all that's left is that OpenAL32.dll problem...

if you get the updater working it has the requested dll

it's okay I just installed openal separately and it's working now.
well kind of, I can start the game, but it has some weird graphics problem and is quite unplayable.
will inspect some more before complaining more

it works now. I have no idea why, one moment I couldn't use the updater and then I could...
and it updated the stuff and now it works... 

I assume he meant the same os as the above post, which is windows xp 32bit
(the same one I use atm, btw)
and I get the same error.
and there aren't many facts to tell because after many reinstalls, all error message that I got (when running settings, client and updater)
was the one about that incorrect configuration file:

"The application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application might fix the problem."

and that's it.

I'll try the linux version later today if I get the time
