I also got the same problem. pslauncher runs fine, pslauncher2 won't run. The client 0.5.6 itself runs fine if it's started directly (psclient.exe), or from the "old" pslauncher.

Neither running pslauncher2 as administrator nor using one of the compatibility modes helped to get it running. And it's not possible to run a 64-bit program "as 32 bit" like Tessra said. Or did you want to say that the 32-bit version isn't affected?

My system: Athlon II X4 640, 4 GB Ram, ATi Radeon 2900 Pro, Windows 7 Professional x64, PS x64

i guess you already tried the updater with --repair and it found some files to replace, and then started the updater again to be sure. Then it said that there would be updates, but this Jamfile was missing.
It was the same procedure for me, but i think there might be a problem with updating after --repairing and that it isn't causing your problem with the exe not responding.

Seems like I found out what caused the client startup problems... it was the openal sound renderer.  ::)
I switched to software like . Elvicat suggests in http://hydlaa.com/smf/index.php?topic=34258.0.
So I can confirm that it helps if the client won't start. I also have a Realtek sound chip, but an ALC650 on a MSI K7G2GM-L board.

I think i'm experiencing a similar, if not the same problem. I can't get the new client to start, an error message "access violation at 7c9206c3" appears after about 0.5 seconds. I tried to reinstall the 02 client, it started normally, then updated again, with the same result. Today i downloaded the full installation and tried that, also the same behaviour. I tried with/without sound and vertex buffer object def/on/off...
When i was completely out of nerves, i set the "compatibility mode for windows 95" for psclient.exe, not expecting anything different. But it started, with no sound, cryptic squared instead of the "Planeshift Steel Blue 0.4.03" in the title, and the psclient process had to be killed manually after quitting. I don't know which of these strangenesses are caused by the compatibility mode or what exactly this mode does, but maybe that could offer a hint to what's wrong...

any ideas?  ???

P.S. i could offer a crash dump, as it was too early for the error log

sorry, forgot my system: Athlon XP 2600+, Geforce 6600GT with driver version 178.24 (updated about a month ago), Win XP SP2

the error log wasn't even existing after the crash, i guess that logging would have begun later. and when i try to start it in console, nothing happens but the prompt returns after an empty line...

In-Game Roleplay Events / Re: [Event] The Night Rogue Strikes!

I am another victim of the Rogue. Here's what i can tell:
I stopped at the plaza to see what was going on there. The guards were talking to a guy who was attacked there, that's what i overheard. They weren't optimistic to catch the offender soon, so they left to warn Allelia and the people in the tavern. Most of the people had already walked away, but there was still a handful of people left, so i felt safe enough. As a peaceful citizen, i had sheltered my weapons, like always. That's why i couldn't react when he appeared behind me and pointed a knife at my throat, demanding all my money. Well, i realized that i had no other chance and gave him my purse... Then... i'm not exactly sure what happened next, but i fell down and when i looked up, the thief has disappeared...
Some others were standing near me, but it was too dangerous to interfere... at least they told me so. Then i went to the tavern to report to the guards, but they had already left... later i met Lieutenant Harcrit and informed him of the crime, but it was too late to follow the thief...
