I've the same problem
My system stat are

P4 3.2GHz 1GB RAM
Ubuntu 8.04 Updated
ATI 9600 XT Catalyst 8.7 installed

OpenGL renderer string: ATI RADEON 9600 Series
OpenGL version string: 2.1.7769 Release

Game version 4.01 with latest update, but i've to modify xml file to let program workin
