Forum and Website Discussions / Re: Get rid of the Wish List forum?

Its not official, its de facto. As in, the de facto use of threads to bump post counts being a fairly standard behavior in internet forums.

As has been indicated, the ability to get a basic review on an idea by posting it to the forum first is a benefit. If a dev thinks something is worthwhile, they might respond with "post it to the tracker". If it has been posted before, someone will say so, hopefully add a link to the original thread, et cetera. Is it just me, or do other people see absolutely nothing wrong with this approach and are also doubtful that this really warrants a thread?

I think he is saying that we could have the combat manager portion of the project broken out as an add on that could be switched out by adding or removing an item from the game directory. The way the project is right now, you could make a different version of the combat manager and use it when the project was compiled. If I was running Planeshift game engine on a test server, and I took the time to re-write the combat manager using D&D ruleset (which would involve a lot of transposition and making of things that are not there), then I could compile with that. But to make it a plugin would take extensive changes to the project the way it is. I am not part of the dev team, so I could be completely wrong, but that is my sincere impression.

General Discussion / Re: PVP rogue area.

Its just a PVP area outside the city. What is the big deal? Leave it, its more interesting this way. If PlaneShift is a roleplaying game, I sure see precious little RP in game. Maybe instead of hanging out on the forum and worrying every detail  to death, everybody should go in game and start some RP.

I like limited-area PVP implementation. So long as the client gets a notification that they have crossed into one of those areas. Preferably in a big red text message. Have not checked out the camp yet, sorry. But I like the implementation.

Honestly, "as daft as a box of kittens in a cyclone" is a rather light comment from Xillix. If you want to see it as a negative insult, nothing I can do about it, but the tone of that  one was rather friendly. And Zanzi is correct, in D&D it used to be a full IG day. But Xillix, software testers do sit around looking at stopwatches... it is part of the job. Not fun, but part of the job.

Players are not testers. Testers require skill and knowledge with software systems. That does not mean knowing how to play games. At least one dev on the team has disagreed publicly in the past with the "players as testers" paradigm. You can try to make them become testers, they might even want to be testers, but it takes time to train a tester on a piece of software, all related systems, and on providing feedback properly on a piece of software.

As of right now, there are no sort of special attack abilities in the combat system. I would imagine that these are planned. But right  now its you try to hit, they try to hit, you try to hit, they try to hit, et cetera. Monk is also one of the first that I try to play in any game, due to the reasons that you mentioned.

Wish list / Re: Teleportation System

Blink is already taken by Warcraft, is it not? Might want to think of a new name. Like... Squadelah!

Note: Original Dungeons & Dragons releases in the 1980s (and probably in the earlier Blackmoor books) had "Blink Dogs" that teleported as part of hunting-pack behavior.

WoW has ripped-off every concept in game from some previous game. MoM has this in abundance as well. In games like these, every idea you have and can have has been thought of, spec'd out, or implemented somewhere else. Its not a big deal unless it is a specific copyright or trademark infringement.

Thinking of all of that makes me all misty-eyed for the days when we played Empire of the Petal Throne tabletop ... that was a serious RP game. Going off topic, sorry, but EotPT was awesome.

The mechanics is the point here, I think. I agree, stats are being treated incorrectly.

Forum and Website Discussions / Re: Regarding "spoilers"
« on: November 24, 2008, 11:50:50 pm »
The policy regarding spoilers is up to Atomic Blue. If they ask you not to link to them or post information on a public page, then please don't. Posting spoiler information on a private site is fine, so long as it is basically passworded. Don't post links to spoilers on this forum. If you need spoilers, join a guild in game.

The grind in PS does not bother me, with the exception that it goes straight up with no opportunities to choose abilities that further customize your character as you progress. And the infinite diminishing returns as you go further and further. Insofar as the monsters in PS are unique from spawn to spawn, we already have bosses. Some give one type of loot, et cetera. Eventually all the monsters will move, the tribes system will be working, and we will have monsters that appear at certain dates and times. Until that time we have placeholder mobs that stay in one place. Yes, of course people are going to camp them. What should they do, ask them out to a movie and dinner?

Wish list / Re: In game polling system.

The server could check the against the account and the IP number and disallow further votes. What bubbles up on the forums is usually less than 10% of what goes on in game. This could be a much better way to get feedback. Not everyone playing the game bothers to come to the forum or IRC.

General Discussion / Re: RP Covenant.

My use of the word below is not in reference to current game or forum situation. It is a description of part of the mechanics of an RP system. But sure, I won't use that word...

The problem that is continually coming up is that RP *needs* moderation. RP without moderation by person -- or without moderation by some automatic system -- becomes a free-for-all or argument, as there is no framework that is being enforced. The framework, or principle, requires intelligence and spontaneity to judge or enforce. Hence, the never-ending discussion. I honestly do not think that any agreement or covenant is going to resolve anything, but I am interested in seeing what principles could develop from this. Would brackets around OOC text be considered a 'principle' in this case?
