But don\'t forget there may be monster, which are clever enough to ignore it! A group of gnomes should be hard enemy, not because they are strong, but they run away if you come near one, while the others are still firing bolts at you. They hide behind bushes and in holes. The can\'t be distracted easily. So if you are alone you may be lost, even if you are a high skilled fighter.

This would require skeletal animation and advanced physics. The first was introduced by Halflife i think, the second is steadily developed.

I don\'t know if the Crystal Engine supports skeletal animation?

Gambling is yet implemented ;)
Meet with other players, everybody drops one crystal, use the /roll 3w6, The winner gets all the crystals ...

I think such card games could be a nice workout :)

I agree with paxx, such a system would favor roleplaying. I like the Fallout approach. For becoming stronger, you had to make some surgical improvements, which took a lot of time (weeks in-game time, you had 90 days for the main quest). You only became better in skills like shooting or stealing.

Hm so we should think of some medieval animals which could serve as newbie-food?
- killer-doves (standard first victim)
- insane donkeys (funny amok-event)
- snakes (below the surface)
- foxes (they attacked my pet!)
- chicken (can\'t counter-attack)

My opinion as always: More power to the players!

I think Planeshift is a big chance to make things different and better. One point is the NPC part. It would be truly amazing to have a world, where players carry the allday tasks, where a whole city can exist without any NPC. Ok but there are problems.

How could we get the players to do that? players don\'t know such a system, so they will behave like in any other MMORPG. This is the task of the current small community! Build up a functional newbie introduction system to lead them into such a world. The beginning of a system, where the Players give quests to other players is the hardest point. How could this get running? Why should a guild hire another player or guild to do a job?

Why should the players do it? Is it bad to force them to do boring jobs like merchants? I think there should be at least one City, which works like a typical MMORPG city, so at least this one will work. The others will struggle in the beginning, but hopefully become superior later.

Now another point. player will have to be more efficient than NPCs. They must have a chance to be better. More profit and nicer for other PCs. Perhaps this will even lead to a point where the devs can remove the NPCs. Players always could do a job better than any NPC, so we should at least give them the chance to do it.

I think these thing will fall into their places, if the days come. If the community wants to party, let them. If not, forget about it.

I think party stuff should be included anyways. If it is used for a christmas party or after the dark army was beaten ... it would  push the nice feeling to even higher levels.

Hiring NPC for adventures is against a role playing community in my eyes. On the other hand it would be nice to have some guards for your house, what would be a pretty boring job for a player ...

Sounds really good!

Perhaps the Dark Armybe beaten throught the mighty spell of heavenly light, where 15 wizards have to do a difficult ritual. The fighter would have to secure them long enough.

I didn\'t thought of in-fight movements.

UT dodging is a nice example for a long, but not high jump, i wanted to say. With Counterstrike, i\'d hate to see people jumping around in the streets all the time, as they did in the first seconds in Counterstrike, before any enemy contact. If Jumping slows you down, you don\'t do it all the time.

Yes i like this great-party events :)

The most important thing is, that we get fireworks and decorations for a big party. Think of Gandalfs fireworks at  Bilbos birthday party! That would be gigantic :D

I know that i won\'t be online on Christmas, but perhaps some lost souls without a nice family would want to celebrate their geeky christmas in Planeshift ...

Paxx added some important arguments ...

I think the main problem is the jumping high issue. Jumpers can avoid fighting by jumping in balconies and roof tops. This is pretty annoying for the sword fighters.

As the Olypmic vs Matrix jumping, i think more about the Halflife way, where you can jump rather realistic and with the jump pack you can jump over a pretty distance, but only as high as before. This style would fit for some races i think. The dodging in UT is also a nice concept.

If i think about the jumping around in CounterStrike, i think they found a good solution now. After a jump you are stopped for one second or less.

The precise jumping to a point ability is also a nice suggestion. It would help in dungeons and similir wierd places, but it is rather annoying in a fight.

No Thynett, your not the only one, but my experiences so far are that if you start playing drunken everybody is confused. Of course it is no problem to act drunken. No need to code anything for that, but i hope that this is possible in the Planeshift world. We need the right players for this, not the right engine. That is real rolyplaying in my eyes, not those fights against mythical monsters...

I like Thynetts calculations, they are already very useable, but don\'t mix jumping with falling damage ;)

drukes idea as also good to prevent crazy jumping around just for training issues. If you can only get 1 skill point per minute/hour (depending on max number) only people who really use jumping will get good at it.

I think the NPCs are planned as very active, if you look at the about page
