This post is to... well, I'm just a messenger. I'm typing this up because Ardoin can't.

The gugrontid militia are setting up and we're basically waylaying bad guys.. for.. y'know.. justice.. and stuff.

I'm not too certain, ask Ardoin...

The Hydlaa Plaza / Re: What D&D Character Are You?

I Am A: Chaotic Evil Human Wizard (3rd Level)

Ability Scores:

Strength-10

Dexterity-14

Constitution-13

Intelligence-15

Wisdom-11

Charisma-13

Alignment:
Chaotic Evil A chaotic evil character does whatever his greed, hatred, and lust for destruction drive him to do. He is hot-tempered, vicious, arbitrarily violent, and unpredictable. If he is simply out for whatever he can get, he is ruthless and brutal. If he is committed to the spread of evil and chaos, he is even worse. Thankfully, his plans are haphazard, and any groups he joins or forms are poorly organized. Typically, chaotic evil people can be made to work together only by force, and their leader lasts only as long as he can thwart attempts to topple or assassinate him. Chaotic evil is sometimes called demonic because demons are the epitome of chaotic evil. Chaotic evil is the best alignment you can be because combines self-interest and pure freedom. However, chaotic evil can be a dangerous alignment because it represents the destruction not only of beauty and life but also of the order on which beauty and life depend.

Race:
Humans are the most adaptable of the common races. Short generations and a penchant for migration and conquest have made them physically diverse as well. Humans are often unorthodox in their dress, sporting unusual hairstyles, fanciful clothes, tattoos, and the like.

Class:
Wizards are arcane spellcasters who depend on intensive study to create their magic. To wizards, magic is not a talent but a difficult, rewarding art. When they are prepared for battle, wizards can use their spells to devastating effect. When caught by surprise, they are vulnerable. The wizard's strength is her spells, everything else is secondary. She learns new spells as she experiments and grows in experience, and she can also learn them from other wizards. In addition, over time a wizard learns to manipulate her spells so they go farther, work better, or are improved in some other way. A wizard can call a familiar- a small, magical, animal companion that serves her. With a high Intelligence, wizards are capable of casting very high levels of spells.

Hmmm. Chaotic evil... this is why the DnD alignment fails. I never break promises and my friends are more important than gold to me. Just also happens that everyone and anyone else can disappear off the face of the earth for all I care.

You know which one is me because I'm the only one in both pictures. I also wear a flat-brimmed, black cowboy hat and spend my free time playing PS or refining the art of being really, really creepy.

Is it just me or are there a disproportionate number of beautiful ladies plating this game?

Development Deliberation / Getting Crystal Space up and running.
« on: June 08, 2009, 11:47:45 am »
I'm working on a project using crystal space, and after many problems, got it to work. Now it says that the C compiler can't be found in the CS folder, fair enough. Do I have to move the C compiler over to the CS folder, or is there a command I could use (in Terminal) that would allow me to be sure that it would look in the correct place every time I try to compile CS?

P.S. Using html, is there anything that will tell the computer to go up to the top, rather than just one level (../users/etc)?

I've searched everywhere, can't find these things. maybe I missed them.

Mac OSX Specific Issues / ATTENTION MAC USERS
« on: May 30, 2009, 12:21:21 am »
FOR ALL MAC USERS ON MAC OSX.5.?

I'll write down here all the steps I took to fix PS. I don't know which one did it, but something worked.

upgrade to 5.7
run psupdater (nothing to update)
alter pssetup to 1/16 in the texture thingy
apply all of caerrie's "fixes"
run PS about a billion times
Smack myself in the forehead with a big book

It worked afterwards. I'm going to tinker with the exacts, because some names are unreadable, but apart from that. all good. thanks for the help.

Mac OSX Specific Issues / Re: Segmentatio Fault
« on: May 29, 2009, 11:59:21 pm »
same thing here. segmentation fault appears to cause the crash. It's irritating the hell out of me. I installed and discovered this game a year or more ago, came back to it after too long, and now versions won't work at all! It kinda p*sses me off. Wasn't broken, but they fixed it, and now loads of people can't play.

Already upgraded to 5.7 (did it today, in fact) then reinstalled planeshift, then ran it. it failed. now to apply any fixes etc, then retry, but I' not putting money on this working...

Here's the details. I'll put the bits that looked important to me at the top, with a full readout underneath.

oooooh... Planeshift wasn't working for me under 5.5, but I'm also just upgraded to 5.7 in an attempt to make it not fail. When the reinstall of planeshift is done, I'll go and see what I have to do with the fixapp (didn't work before) to make it run.

Development Deliberation / Re: Not sure if this goes in here...
« on: May 29, 2009, 05:43:48 pm »
Having a look at those, I've upgraded to the most recent OSX.5 version, and in about 15 minutes the druids will be getting back to me with the auspices. Computers really do work by magic...

Anyway, I'd be useless helping with planeshift, since I have no useful skills. I woke up with an idea in my head and I'm getting other people to make it happen :D

THanks for the aid, I'll whine a bit more when it doesn't work.

12
thanks guys. I'll do that, retry and reinstall, and then whine when it doesn't work again :D

Development Deliberation / Not sure if this goes in here...
« on: May 28, 2009, 06:11:55 pm »
I couldn't find anywhere else to put this question in, so I thought I would ask you, as I'm currently working on a game similar in some ways to planeshift and I was hoping I might be able to gather some wisdom for the tasks ahead of me. I've had a look at the crystal space engine, but that gives me no more indication of how you did things than a blank piece of paper would tell me how a masterpiece is written. Now, if I may be so bold...

How do you keep track of monsters? Is the general location of each group of creatures stored, but specific locations are only determined when the area becomes "in use", or is every monster tracked permanently, so someone with a bird's eye view could see every single one moving about?

How large and wonderful a server is required to keep everything in check? My game-in-development is NPCless, so does that help, or are they not much of a problem?

You are one of the few games out there that do xp based on actual activities, but does tracking so many different xp numbers strain the system? Simpler (and less awesome) systems have just the one, but you have to handle as many numbers as there are skills.

Do you guys know of any graphic artists going spare, looking for a new project, because I never thought those art-degree dossers would be so useful...

Thank you. (I only have time to post this because Planeshift is being a bit of a bugger right now...)

14
When I try to start up planeshift, I double click on PSclient, and away it goes. I og in, choose character, it loads up, and then it just dies. it tells me that it has unexpectedly stopped working (unexpected? not so much...) Apparently this has been fixed for others by adding two lines of code, or fixing bits, but it hasn't worked for me. I'm using MAC OS X.5.5, with the standard ATI 1600 graphic thingy in. I guess I should change the title of this topic, since that's not the problem any more. I'll try a reinstall and get back to you guys.

15
Ok, Ok. I've implanted the things I've got to implant, al that is done, no new help needed. NOW the problem is that these things have not worked
