I know that this is sort of off the subject, but it is very much related to Planeshift.  I am trying to get my Redhat 6.2 ( I know that it is old) box back up and running.  I have successfully installed the OS in server mode.  Now I cannot seem to get the interface to the Linksys NIC to load correctly.

The reason that I am trying to do this follows.  I see that there are a lot of people out there running XP that are having a world of trouble getting their connection to work.  It takes forever to load, when they get in the performance is choppy, etc.  So what I am trying to do is set up a server of my own, in-house so that I can have free reign as far as the testing that I do.  I want to take a look at how the DLLs are being loaded, how the page files are being used, etc....to help the people with the average machines (900s +) be able to actually enjoy the game.  I have a few people here in the states that are willing to help me with this issue.  We just cannot get to the server sometimes because of the high ping times over our route.

Ok.  After all that talk...here is the problem.  I have a linksys100 that works perfectly in this server when it has windows loaded.  When redhat is on here I cannot get the eth0 interface to come up.  When I go into netconf to set it up everything seems fine.  I set it to DHCP to work with my cable router.  I set the interface name and the tulip module as it should be.  Sometimes I place the IRQ of 9 in there.  When I apply the changes I get no errors with the tulip module.  When i try most other modules I get errors that are so long and crazy that I cannot remember them.  When i bring up netstat -i it only shows the lo interface.  When I reboot and it tries to bring up eth0 it will say that it is trying but the message is always \"Delaying eth0 intitialization\" or something about the resource already being loaded or in use.  There are no other nics in there.

When I take is out and reboot it wants to remove the configuration.  When I reboot and put it back in Kudzu wants to come up and configure it.  But the end result is that it never will load up all the way or show up in my interface listings.

Nothing is working.  DHCP nor maual settings seems to get anything done.  Any help will be greatly appreciated.

What system are you using?  If it is linux you should be able to execute ./pslient.  If it is windows you should be able to find the psclient.exe file in the Planeshift folder that was created in your Program Files folder.

Technical Help: Problems BEFORE entering the game / Same thing here

I get the same thing as well.  I have tried everything from lowering the settings all the way down in both resolution and color depth to changing the compatability mode of the way XP emulates the program.  I even nixed the sound and music.

This is the machine that i used to play Everquest on.  It ran as smooth as baby ass.  When I get in Planeshift, however, I cannot even make a full turn without the GUI freezing and then jerking.  The only thing that is smooth (relatively) is the shouting that all the other chars are doing.  Everyone that I have talked to ingame, or whose comments I have read here, that are not having this problem are running superhorse workstations or linux boxes (that my be supoerhorses as well).

Here is my configuration.  Not the best, but still able to play any other game that I want to flawlessly.

900MHz AMD Duron
512 MB RAM
Windows XP Pro
Cable Connection
Voodoo Card with 16 MB onboard

When I log into the game and start to lag I bring up the task manager and the psclient is taking up from 86 to 97 percent of my CPU resources.  This happens if I leave all of the processes running or kill all the ones that are not needed for system maintenance and network connectivity.  I am getting ready to upgrade to a 1.3 GHz processor with a frontline bus of 266MHz, but that is to get ready for World of Warcraft when it comes out and in case I decide to play EQ2.  This game should not be anywhere as resource intensive as those two.

If you are having the same things with your machine could you make sure that you post your system configuration with the things that you are experiencing so that it can help the dev people out.

Thanks.

I know that a server setup is a big commitment/headache/hastle.

Is that what you told all of the people before me that offered to host?  They offer to host and then you just blow them off saying that it is a hastle?  Come on man.  You know that people who are of the open-source mind are used to hastles and are usually more dedicated than the average out-ot-the-box moron.  I do not have access to a dedicated connection any more and my *NIX box is down for reapirs or else I would take you up on your offer just to test your mettle.

I understand the testing of server load argument very well, and please assume that I understand how the rendering and transferance of data as far as the game goes.  I am not mad as I know that you get contacted by a lot of people that just do not know and want to complain.

I still think that these problems that you have listed are far outweighed by the benefits you will get from the people this side of the planet who will be able to get on better.

Just out of curiosity...what would I need to do to set up my own server?  And what are you seeing as the bare bones minimum system requirements?

Thanks for the info.

Wish list / NEW SERVER PLEASE
« on: May 29, 2003, 08:07:55 pm »
I am a new user to the system and I am really liking what I am seeing.  I used to be addicted to EQ, but had to stop playing once I went back to school.

Now on to the real meat of the message.  I see on the site that you have received a bunch of volunteers for server hosts, but have decided not to add any.  I think that this is a big mistake.  My reason for saying this is that I am a developer myself and would glady aid in whatever ways I can.  In order to do this I need to be able to get on the server without lagging so bad that I cannot even make a smooth turn while walking.

Due to me being in Atlanta, Georgia in the USA and the server being in Singapore I get pings that are no less than upper 200s, but mostly upper 300s.  It is so bad that I cannot even enjoy the gameplay.  Sometimes it takes me almost 10 minutes to log on.  I have a new box with no memory/CPU/OS problems and a broadband connection.  I see real potential here, but there needs to be another server located in a strategic position so that more people can test and offer input so that when it goes public it will be the best that it can be.  Is that not the whole point of open-source?

I was having a very similar problem on my XP box with very similar specs

when connecting with OpenGL i would not be able to get anywhere...I would be so shoppy that I could not turn around

no matter what I set in the pssetup.exe file it would still use openGL.  So what I did was comment out the video renderer listing in the psclient.cfg file.

; Video Driver
;System.PlugIns.iGraphics3D = crystalspace.graphics3d.opengl

the next time I connected it was still choppy but I was at least able to move.  I am in Atlanta, Georgia and the pings to the server are close to the 400s so I am not expecting that much right now.

Try this and let me know if it helps.
