Linux Specific Issues / Newbie guide works to here, then Im stuck, please help

Hi Everyone
Followed the newbie guide and get the following. The character create screen just spins and spins waiting for server. Could some one interprete the below please.

Technical Help: Problems BEFORE entering the game / Character select - waiting on server

Hello
This is my first post so please be gentle  :sweatdrop:
I think Ive checked in the right places and done most of the right things before posting but I dare say someone will cut  me off at the knees if I havent.

I have successfulling navigated installation and registration. My issue is with the Character select screen. I can log on an all but when it gets to this screen it just hangs. The message is "waiting server data"

The middle of screen spins and spins and spins and continues to spin unabaited.
Back button works and Quit button works so I can get out of the game so it doesnt feeze the screen, just hangs.
The delete button works and the pop up comes but with no character to delete the obvious "you have no character to delete" message appears. The OK button works and closes the popup

The select new character and join buttons, nothing happens.
When I say hangs i dont mean 30 seconds and I got impatient I mean 4 hrs.

I havent got past this screen yet
Run the updater as part of the installation process so have latest version

would love a hand to get through this little challenge (Ubuntu 8.04 btw)
