They don't respond if you type into the NPC tab of the chat window anymore. Now you have to right click on them and then click on the talk button to bring up a window with predetermined responses to choose from.

I had the same problem trying to run the linux 0.5 client but was able to update by running:

./pslaunch --console --repair

That post is referring to the old 0.4.0.1 version, but you're using the 0.5.0.0 so it won't help to have it.

I get the same message. According to http://planeshift.ezpcusa.com/ and http://laanx.fragnetics.com/ there isn't anyone connected to Ez and only a dozen or so on Laanx, so I'm guessing the servers are down for testing/maintenance/upgrade.
