Linux Specific Issues / Re: No shortcuts and doesn't run - Kubuntu
« on: December 26, 2009, 04:16:59 pm »
Thanks y'all for trying to help. Since there don't appear to be any solutions forthcoming, I guess I'll give it up. I've already uninstalled from Windows because the game consistently crashed a few minutes into it each time. I had hopes I might get it to work on Linux enough to at least get into it and see if I wanted to stick with it, but looks like that's not going to happen either. Next time I log into Linux, I'll uninstall.

Thanks again!

Firke and Idoru...nope. No such file as planeshift.cfg.

psclient.cfg
pslaunch.cfg
vsf.cfg

I do not find that line in any of them.

FWIW, here's the error log contents:

you need threading.alwaysrunnow = true (note that's not the precise case)

Sorry...no idea what that means or where it goes. Is it in one of the *.cfg files? Can you elaborate?

Thanks!

Rigwyn...

Sorry to take so long to get back. I tried those things you suggested. No change. I created the link in the MENU to psclient as you described and as when I click it in the Konqueror folder, nothing happens. When I click pslaunch in Konqueror, I get the initial screen with QUIT, REPAIR, SETTINGS, PLAY buttons, but when I click PLAY, it closes. When I click psclient, nothing happens.

When I ran pslaunch, I got that initial screen, but then an update notice, and I updated. When I ran repair, it found that I had edited the pslaunch.cfg file to make the full screen option TRUE, and it repaired that back to FALSE.

Unless you or somebody else has another suggestion, I guess I'll just have to stick with playing it in Windows. I did go back and play it in Windows for about five minutes, and while talking to the blacksmith gal at the forge, it crashed. I'm not sure I even want to go on playing it at this stage of development, but will try again, and if I can get the Linux version working, maybe that will help - but I'm expecting a new set of problems, like the inevitable problem with sound that seems to plague Linux installations.

Thanks for your suggestions. I'll keep watch here for a few days for any further replies.

Rigwyn...Thanks for the quick reply!

I'm back in Windows now since I needed to do some work here, but will follow up on your reply later today.

I'd already learned how to add shortcuts, so have done that with both one in the START menu and one on the desktop, but I will check them and make sure that the COMMAND is as you show. However, as I mentioned, when I ran psclient.bin from the folder, nothing happened.

I did not repair as root, and will do that when I boot back to Linux later.

Thanks again! I'll report back in when I try those things.

Linux Specific Issues / No shortcuts and doesn't run - Kubuntu

I DLed and installed PlaneShift per the excellent sticky Guide post. I thought I had it made, but then wasn't able to find a shortcut to launch. In my Kubuntu installation, I have two GAMES menu items: one is DEBIAN/GAMES and the other is just GAMES. I also have a DEBIAN/APPLICATIONS item, but there is no GAMES item under it. There is no APPLICATIONS item in the first level. I wish I had requested a desktop shortcut during installation. I suspect I can figure out how to put one there, but I haven't done that yet.

I navigated to opt/PlaneShift/ and clicked on pslaunch.bin. It launched the game in windowed mode. I first checked some options, but every time I clicked OK to get out of the options menu, the game closed. I had elected the full screen option in the GENERAL section, but when I clicked the full screen button in the upper-right corner, nothing happened. I also ran the REPAIR function and it stepped through with no dialog other than the progress percentage steps shown. When I clicked OK, it closed. I ran psclient.bin to see if that was working and it didn't do anything.

I edited the pslaunch.cfg file for full screen, and that now works when I launch. When I click PLAY, it closes.

So, the first question is how do I place a shortcut in the run menu? The second question - and more important since I probably can't figure it out by myself as I can with the first question, is, what's going on and why won't it run?

Thanks!
