Technical Help: Problems BEFORE entering the game /
« on: June 09, 2003, 08:26:40 pm »
Sounds like even if I do get OpenGL working on my system, I\'ll still be underpowered.  I ran into the same problem when beta-testing Rubies of Eventide.  Looks like I need an upgrade.

Voodoo video cards are no longer supported by most game developers, since 3dfx was bought by nVidia and the Voodoo line dropped.

That said, there are still people using these cards and, more importantly, creating drivers for them, including OpenGL support. Check out these sites -

http://www.voodoofiles.com/

http://www.3dfxzone.it/

Best place to start is
http://www.3dfxzone.it/koolsmoky/3dfxvs.html

And bios updates can be had from
http://welcome.to/3dfxBios

Problem is, WinXP doesn\'t seem to play well with OpenGL in general and third-party drivers for Voodoo cards specifically. I\'m running with a Voodoo 5 5500, which is a 64 MB card, but I\'ve had no luck so far with 3dfxzone, 3HDQ, or x3dfx drivers - Windows won\'t even run right when I try those. Maybe I\'m just not doing it right - just recently went from Win98 to WinXP and haven\'t got everything figured out yet.

Right now I\'m using the video drivers Microsoft gives me when I run Windows Update - those are not bad for Direct3D, but they suck for OpenGL. \"Microsoft Display Driver Version 5.01.2001\" - lord I hope that\'s not the date MS last updated the drivers, but probably is.

I just downloaded this game and played for just a few minutes. No problems getting connected, logged in, etc, but the only way I can play is in Software mode, which is abysmally slow FPS. Planeshift does not even see my Voodoo when I try OpenGL - \"No hardware acceleration!\" in psclient.txt.

I\'ve seen similar problems with Neverwinter Nights and Morrowind, was able make them playable by tweaking things and using 3DHQ drivers while I was running Win98, but WinXP is being a snob.

I\'d love to upgrade my video card, but car and house upgrades are getting higher budget priority for a while :P

If anyone is successfully playing this game with WinXP and a Voodoo card, I\'d love to hear details!

You ever seen the Redwoods? Those really huge, old trees in California?

You can thank me for planting them :)
