Linux Specific Issues / ATI, crystalspace, or something else...

I'm having quite time with this one...
This is my first time trying this game out, so not really sure what to expect/ignore/whatever...
I try booting up the game. I get a crystalspace.sndsys.renderer.null not loaded error, but the game goes to the account info screen. Everything seems gravy, so I login and start to create a character and that's where it becomes apparent that the resolution is too big for the screen. I can't click the button to finalize making a character. I also can't escape out of the game, so I'm stuck until a hard reset.
Also, the character models are all colored black. All the 2d art seems fine, except the mouse cursor.
I've tried to lower the resolution via client options and I tried editing the /opt/planeshift/pslaunch.cfg. I haven't poked around much in psclient.cfg tho.
I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 on an Asus K72DR laptop , so it's got one of those weird triple core AMD CPUs and and a ATI HD5000 with the glrfx driver. (I think it's a mobility 5740). Seems to run fine on anything that doesn't involve Wine.
Anyhow... If someone could point me in the right direction towards fixing this I'd be most appreciative.
