General Discussion / Re: You Might Be An Oldbie If...

Is there a name for when you joined back when Hydlaa was a) flat and b) the entire world, but you haven't been back in so long that you are now far, far worse than the newbiest of newbs?

As in: Crafting? I have no idea how to do that. I do now how to convincingly introduce myself to a ruby, emerald or diamond... so there's that.

The league of obsolescence?

Nyleve was the first NPC. She used to stand there all day, and when you spoke to her she'd answer instantly. Scary.
I know monk is about, but the oldbie in me misses Havena. And yea, Dagger and Django... :(

Enraged... well, definitely the most appropriate name :)

Nyleve was also known as "the 13th NPC", right? :P

The Gila-beast was around ingame some time ago; met him in the tavern.
And Havena is still playing, only as a different char, no?

...I bet you miss Enraged too, Ayshe ;P

Hmm... this is probably the guild I'd like to see back the most.

I really like Felines Lair and most of it members. I had been even part of it. And that's why it pains me to see in which state this guild is. Felines Lair maybe a very old guild but I think being active as a guild looks a little bit different.

I agree completely. I'm not sure who you were expecting to contradict you, but when they show up I hope they read this post. The IRC channel is where we still are most active, and that is the continuity that has been the guild for so long. Actual ingamey-ness has been very sparse indeed, I think we see maybe six players a week who log in. At one time we had a massive amount of effort being put in by so many players, but it wasn't just us who dissappeared. When all your friends stop playing, and the guilds you have always known become ghosts, it becomes difficult to pick the gems, the roleplayers from the steady stream of stats-players. It sucks all the enthusiasm out of the experience.

The source of declline and apathy for me personally has always been missing dearly departed characters. I remember the heyday of FL & the world we explored, and it saddens me. Giladrial, Havena, Nyleve the blacksmith of The Mafia, Moogie, Pooky... hell I would be here all day naming them. I know recently the dev team has had a massive boost in energy, but for a while there the almost-contempt feeling players got from the dev team was a huge contributor too. There is an ebb and flow to most organisations, guilds are no different.

I would like to mention that it appears Jjairr is back as of last week, I truly do hope things pick up...

You can't take database creation date as the indicator of how old a guild is. During the switch from MB every guild was wiped, and since Xenia was a playtester she created FL before the public launch. DB date means nothing... The three oldest guilds are DE, XG and FL. All three are active as defined by the members. What other definition is there? I am willing to bet that there has been continuity of personnel, forums or whatever since day one for all of the guilds that call themselves active.

I will claim a small (very small) trophy as being the oldest original guildleader. Now git off mah lawn!

Posted May of 2007:  Lair's 4th BDay Thread.

That puts them at being created in 2003.

May 23 2003, I registred the guild on my first day of play, as all aspiring n00bs should :p

what zanzi is trying to state is that by you RPing that you and your guild were owners of that particular house were essentially godmodding by forcing everyone else to RP that you owned that house

Ah, gotcha.

I don't contest that claim, certainly. And in nearly every respect, one guild saying they arbitrarily own something is unfair. But consider this, how many houses are ingame? We didn't choose that one to be auctioned, a dev did. Somewhere along the line, someone became aware that that particular house was being "squatted" in by a guild, either before or after they decided it was to be made a guildhouse. Of all the hundreds. Had they chosen the one next to it, or any other house, FL would have not made a squeak.

What does that say? Were we to completely change our roleplay history and retrofit every story centered on the house? There are many houses in game. Are we to believe they are all empty? Please. Someone chose that house deliberately. What better way to get interest than choose something that someone values. Valued because we 'godmoded' it.

I would love to hear the dev rationale for choosing the three houses so far auctioned; I have a feeling they are done so so that people who want to own specific buildings can own buildings. They have value because the community values them.

@Ayshe:  You were godmoding, so you don't have much grounds for complaint in my book.  Sorry.

What's godmoding?

And um, I wasn't complaining - I was pleased with the outcome. Do you read before you post?

I thought I might throw in my two cents.

Felines Lair has always strived to be a guild of exceptional roleplayers - i.e we try to set examples.

The house in question we had roleplayed as being ours for some time. Ask any member, there's a bar downstairs in the commons, the roof sometimes leaks in the rain and there is a dusty library scattered with Mordon's books.

When we heard that it was our house that was to be auctioned, the guild as a whole was mortified. Shurrim said it best, that RP'ers cannot come up with the funds that PL'ers have. It's true. During the auction as we watched the prices climb I was frantically calling in favours and pledges. To our guild, it was our home, and even though seven million trias is an insane amount of money, to the guild it was worth every coin.

Don't think that FL has many more millions to spare. The house has all but bankrupted the guild. Ayshe herself gave her last coin, and Hassadria has a long list of people we owe vast sums to. We will all be mining the rest of our natural lives.

Personally, the roleplay aspect of the auction would always be difficult to do, but I think it was handled very well. I was especially touched that the auctioneer mentioned our guild by name when they spoke of how the house came to be auctioned.

Our little family came together and we were desperate, begging people not to bid during the auction. As a roleplay event, we all felt for real this sense of urgency and impending loss. I am glad that the house was not given to us, and instead we all had to go into debt for many millions to afford the house. Is that not more like what would actually happen, had our kin been threatened with eviction?

I thank those who also roleplayed the event with us, especially those who rallied to our aid, both with voice and with coin.

Had we more than ten keys, I am sure you'd all be invited to the party :)

I just hope to Gods the furniture is a little less expensive... :D

Guilds Forum / Happy 4th birthday Felines Lair!
« on: May 23, 2007, 11:56:28 am »
Wow, it seems like only yesterday I first stepped into Planeshift. Crystal runs, mass suicides off the tower... ahh those truly were the days!

Felines Lair (and Ayshe) turn four today!

One more year and we get to go to school  :woot:

It's been a fun ride so far... not counting the breaks here and there, of course. A big thankyou to all members, past and present (who remembers Xenia!) and of course, friends and allies.

Currently the guild is administered by myself, but run by Dilphemor, Jjairr, Hassadria and Miaua. Thanks to the steady efforts of those four, I can retire and live the good life, sipping dacharis in the tavern!

Pop by and say hi sometime

Here's to four more?

(groan :P)

At which point do you think it will become off hold?

Development hasn't entirely ceased, just slowed for the crazy season :)

Also, they look like a bunch of amateurs  :sweatdrop:

Some clarification:

At the time I posted the "disbanded" speech, it was my intent to close the doors for good. At that time I was planning for my wedding and believed I needed more free time.

Anyone who knows me personally will know exactly how that turned out.

Regardless, I never actually disbanded ingame, just set it "secret" so the tags would not show. My own arrogant pride at work, I just could not bring myself to disband.

My then-second-in-charge, the lovely JJaiirr, still wanted to continue our proud traditions. After a couple of months, I aquiesced. I gave her command of the guild, remaining the owner and level 9 ingame. I kept my distance to see what would become of it, intending to post here should it prove viable.

It did indeed, but I neglected to post. Felines Lair is alive, happy and well under JJairr's direction. I am still set as leader of the guild and do play from time to time, but it is Jj's hard work that has brought our new members. To my delight, she has maintained a strong roleplay requirement, and upheld all of the things that I always expected of the Lair.

This post is to make official what some ingame surely must realise; Felines Lair never really left.

Guilds Forum / Home again
« on: September 14, 2006, 11:49:37 pm »
Soft rainfall fell on the roof of the old building. Disuse had caused the once pristine tiles to become an array of cracked and malaligned jigsaw pieces. Rain dripped through, on to the beams below. In a dusty bar that had long ago been claimed by the spiders, pools of water gathered on the floor as the wooden ceiling wept. The early dawn light was seeping through misted windows, falling upon furniture stacked neatly on tables, a fireplace that housed a clean, swept but long abandoned hearth.

On this subdued grey morning, a key rattled in a lock. When once it was neatly oiled, it was now noisy, yet it yielded. The door itself was stuck slightly and groaned and creaked before being flung open with some effort.

A figure walked in, shaking the morning rain off with each soft step. It pulled back it's hood and looked around the room.

She was an enkidukai, with a complicated tribal painting across half her face. It was called a Kei'da, and she meticulously applied it into the fur every time it faded. Each line had a meaning, each symbol told a tale.

Ayshe looked around the damp, abandoned common room of the Felines Lair guildhall and smiled.
Home again.
