Technical Help: Problems BEFORE entering the game /
« on: August 28, 2003, 02:33:21 am »
AMEN BROTHER!!!

I would love to lend a hand, however, the only PC programming that I am proficient with are Java, VB, and PHP (sort of PC compared to what I do.)  I am a Mainframe assembler/COBOL/Natural/JCL/adabase/CICS programmer by trade for the past 5 years.  It\'s a bit different than PC, sometimes tougher and sometimes easier.

I do learn very rapidly so if there is anything I could do to assist let me know!  =)

I used to lag and now hardly at all.  All I did was set the compatability mode for psclient (in Windows XP) to Windows 2000.  The newbie guide tells you to set it to Windows 98/ME but that will not work well.

I am now lag free and fell through a HUGE hole and into a large cavern where I am now stuck **cough**spawn**cough**

Awesome thanks!  I changed the psclient to run in windows 2000 compatability mode (I am on Windows XP at the moment) and it runs almost lag free now.

I find this somewhat ironic but when I set the video (in windows) to the highest resolution this game runs much more smoothly.  I lag WAY less now and that is darn strange considering I am supposed to be using more system resources with higher res.

I know that planeshift runs better on Linux or freeBSD, however, after following all of the directions from various folks in this forum about how to update all your source for freeBSD (btw I have 5.1), install crystal, instal cel and planeshift,  I am now sick of freeBSD and all open source that I have tried.

I hope someone gets a good guide out there for idiots like me.  I have been a programmer for 5 years and have never had this much trouble with anything!

I could never get past the crystal space (or whatever it was called) compile because I kept getting errors about not being able to find files and directories.  I tried updating my freeBSD via CVS and I couldn\'t get authenticated on any server I tried!

I am thinking that after about 10 years I will finally be able to get around in freeBSD but until then I will be stuck with the monopolizing monster Mr. Bill Gates.  =(

So that means that I will probably never be able to play planeshift.  =(  Hand me a tissue someone!

Seems like everyone on this post http://www.planeshift3d.com/wbboard/thread.php?threadid=3047&boardid=17&styleid=3&sid=618fb2d044f549f1469208dba7d28a93
had a great time and finally figured it out.  More power to them.

processor brand: Athlon
processor speed: 1.5 GHz
amount of main memory:  768 MB
graphiccard brand: nVidia
graphiccard chip: nVidia GeForce 4 Ti 4200
amount of memory on graphiccard: 128 MB
operating system: Windows XP
average fps: 15

It jumps a lot from 1 to 35 or so especially when turning (lower FPS) and when the dreaded rain comes(again lower FPS).  Moving forward it usually averages 15 FPS.  I have to run it in safe mode to do anything though.  The openGL mode is too slow.

Then they should not have it listed on gamespot\'s \"Beta\" list if it is not beta.

Yeah sure it\'s a free game and we should\'nt complain because it is only in beta stages.  So I am not complaining but merely expressing my view on my experiences.

1)  The FPS and lag is so bad that I was able to move a few steps once every 2 minutes and I was able to type a couple words every 2 or 3 minutes.

2)  It took me about 2 days to connect.

3)  Did I mention the lag?

There is nothing wrong with releasing a beta but usually it has been programmer tested for a bit before the beta gets released.  This way you can fix minor and devestating problems such as database errors, etc.

I have never been in game programming but I have been in computer programming a few years and there are things that we can fix that will at least let the user log in, create an account, etc.  Man this was the most frustrating experience in my life!

Another issue.  The servers are where?  A majority of users are from the U.K. and U.S.A. most times so why would you have the server thousands of miles away from the nearest border of either country knowing that those two countries would be your biggest hitters?  The farther away, the more lag in most cases, especially dial-up users.

Perhaps you should make it a necessity to give the password aswell, since the account will be deleted anyway and the player can recreate with a new pass.

I don\'t know if you have a way of seeing if accounts really do have the database error but that\'s my 2c.

It would make much more sense to create a trouble ticket system that would only be viewable to the techs.  You never want to post passwords no matter if the account is to be deleted or not.

I see that I no longer get the database error however now it times out when connecting and the server shows as running on the site.
