General Discussion / Re: RP school
« on: June 25, 2011, 01:05:42 pm »
I hope this adds to the discussion.

I am a new player and one thing I feel would be very beneficial to myself and perhaps others is some sort of speech style guidelines. This would include tips to reflect the intelligence level of your character (lack of specific vocabulary and grammar), additional vocabulary that isn't common in modern speech and even vocabulary specific to Yliakum and it's localities. I also see a need for some location information to help players develop a background of where their character was born/lived specifically. I was only able to find a handful of locations and still barely know anything about the place (Homestead) I chose for my first character. I understand of course, that we are limited by what information we are provided/have already attained; or are we not? How much information can we "create" about the world for our characters and what kinds of intellectual creations will be respected/accepted by the community?

I do feel there are a number of gaps in the readily available knowledge.

The guides I have read for roleplaying simply state the intrinsic elements involved, such as "creating seperation" between yourself and your character, immersing yourself in the experience, speaking only about things your character would be aware of, etc.

I did a lot of searching and read what I believe to have been the majority of available information on this subject here on the forums, but I'm not perfect so pardon me if I've missed anything.

Sidenote: School, education and mind control are all seperate concepts. Education and mind control can both occur in school, but true education is about empowerment and creating intellectual malleability in the minds of individuals.

For a slightly more detailed description and instructions of how to do this on a Windows OS, please check out the following post(with Gilrond's updated server URL included): http://www.hydlaaplaza.com/smf/index.php?topic=39573.msg447599#msg447599

It's not down, just the URL above is not correct. It should be:

http://updater.sajut.de/update/

The URL is not incorrect as you stated, it's just old. lol I did in fact update with that URL. It was just a couple days ago, therefore it is down/outdated, hence my concern for it being "temporary" as I stated in my original post. Your URL is the newer URL, that's all. I'm going to edit my directions for clarification, with the new URL that you've provided.

I was suffering the same problem for days, I can tell you what worked for me. There is a .xml file called "updateservers.xml" in your planeshift directory which is usually C:\Program Files\Planeshift in windows. I apologize, but I'm unsure how to do this on any other OS, perhaps you can simply locate the file on your OS (which I've never heard of lol). It seems to be the file that points to the update server that Planeshift will use. It is currently set to the "ss9" server which is not functioning.

You need to open this file with notepad by right-clicking it and mousing over "Open with" then selecting "Notepad" from the list.

You will see:

<mirrors>
        <mirror id="1" name="ss9" url="http://updater.s99 etc etc (I forgot the exact URL)" />
</mirrors>

Simply delete all the information and replace it wiith this:

<mirrors>
        <mirror id="1" name="sajut" url="http://updater.sajut.de/update/" repair="true" />
</mirrors>

Then reload Planeshift and it should update for you.

CAUTION: I believe this server is temporary.

Don't forget to copy the updateservers.xml file and paste it elsewhere so that you wont have to completely reinstall to regain the previous server information. I've been able to update and enter into the game this way.

I hope this works for you.
