Technical Help: Problems BEFORE entering the game / Crash at 'Create new character' screen

I am trying to play the game on a mini mac 10.5.8, 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo.
The game crashes every time at the 'create new character' screen, when I click on any of the races. Also if I click on the 'advanced' tab.
I have just installed the new software updates and restarted the computer but that didn't help.
What to do?
