Technical Help: Problems BEFORE entering the game / OS X Lion, hang on start, 100% CPU utilization, app not responding

When I try to start the app the progress bar fills then it just sits there doing nothing. I let it go for five minutes but it wasn't downloading anything (no network activity) and Activity Monitor says the app is not responding.
Here's what the screen looks like, you can see the progress bar is full:
