Technical Help: Problems BEFORE entering the game /

processor brand: Pentium 4
processor speed: 2.5 ghz
amount of main memory: 256
graphiccard brand: Nvidea
graphiccard chip: Geforce 4
amount of memory on graphiccard: 64
operating system: XP home
average fps: dismally low...i dont want to put an average because it would be wrong...much of the time it is under 1 fps but everysooften it will jump to 100 or so for like 5 seconds
I also have a question about Open GL. Mainly what is it? It seems most people with nvidea graphics cards have this so I was wondering what it does and if there was a way to turn it on and off or whatever to help my fps\'s.
