General Discussion / Re: Dev Q&A August 10 2025
« on: August 21, 2026, 08:31:21 pm »
Greetings.

I think I missed this Dev Q&A. Interesting discussion you had about rolls. Thanks for posting, Gonger.

I think if used wisely and in a balance rolls could add to RP. It would add a bit of randomness a char might need to react to.

I agree to take imagination over strict adherence to some kind of rules. And maybe not all rolls would need to be against a fixed value for success or failure. If you have to think beforehand on what fixed value to use, this distracts from immersion I think.

But for example I can roll for Damola when she casts a spell and then take it into account for RP. Also GM can take it into account. I'd trust Uadjet on that and not require a set value beforehand. One example: Damola casts Analyze Dweomer to find out more about some magic in an item. When the roll is high, then GM can tell me more details and if its low, maybe Damola only receives a general, but blurry sense of what magic might be involved. And if its is really low, maybe it can be fun to play out the occasional failure to accomplish something. Just considering Damola as a master in blue doing some water spell and then play out how it fails in a funny way spreading the water all over Anysu's precious fur. ;D Damola would then just look at the result with astonishment and depending on her current mode take it with ease and tease Anysu about it or be annoyed with the failure.

I bet many chars of seasoned players are overpowered with a lot of skills and stats. Adding a bit of randomness can add to the sense that they are not perfect either. On the other hand, it may also be fun to play out an exceptional success. Like 20+ or even 25+ with bonuses. Or for a new player with a new char like 16+ or 18+ and then playing out a surprise at how good something went while being ICly aware not being all that skillful in that area yet.

I think I might experiment with that without overthinking it. And I may not do a roll on every attempt to do something, but maybe on some attempts.

So my suggestion would be: Use an occasional roll as additional input, yet not sole determination on how to RP something. Does that sound reasonable to you?

Love,
Damola

General Discussion / Re: New Dryken Plane - thoughts and discussion
« on: February 21, 2026, 02:19:10 pm »
After much struggling and setbacks due to not meeting system requirements and resolution dependencies, I was finally able to experience this addition. Immediately my question was: so, players cannot be native to Yliakum at all? Every single player character now comes through a portal? That also means that the species who get changed upon the traversal (Ylian mages losing their native magic, Klyros being severely weakened, etc.) will have this as a starting point? If so, however, this would be a traumatic experience that cannot be relayed through bits of lore that one may never even read. Voduls avatar would need to tell them, at least, while it's at it, anyway.

This has been and still is one of my major lore-wise concerns.

I decided to decide myself whether a char I created or will create has been coming through a portal or has been born in Yliakum. Lore-wise both is possible, cause according to a lot of in game books there have been generations of people living on Yliakum already and people came in through portals already generations ago. We even had quite a few GM events with exactly that lore as background. In my point of view it is even more likely to be born on Yliakum than to come through a portal these times, see below for reasoning.

Damola has been born on the lower plane of Yliakum were many Nolthrir live. Her parents still live there and that's it. In fact she has mentioned that some times in GM events as well. Nothing of that will change due to Dryken Plane addition.

There is a culture in Yliakum already. And it should be the players decision whether to build a new char upon that culture. This combined culture of people from different races for generations, be it from a race like the Nolthrir who originally fled their home world or a race like the Kran who have been created on Yliakum by Talad, makes the medieval world we love to RP in. Additionally given there have been cataclysmic catastrophic events in home worlds generations ago it is unexplainable to me that still a huge lot of people would be coming through the portals. Unless those events have been spanning hundreds of cycles, but in my point of view a cataclysm does not last that long. It is sudden, massive and most people would have to flee in a short period of time. The people coming through the portals would all be severely traumatized from these cataclysmic events. Especially in case one would argue a cataclysm has lasted this long and developed slowly over time.

Thanks dearly, Gonger! It is always good to be able to read some of the previous dev q&a at a later time.

And to see the ideas we came up with.  :)

You are welcome, Gonger.

Damola shuffles that "h" into the [url] tag with her special letter shuffling glyph. That "h" resists at first, but with that highly advanced magic it finally agrees to go into the right place.

Thanks a ton for the new patch.

About the new locomotion system I like how Damola runs when running a curve like a professional racing car.  \\o//

Hi.

@Gonger: I basically agree with what you say. I am not sure about good alternative web pages to go to, but I will ponder over this a bit more. I follow a German language based site called Holarse Gaming. Their page about PlaneShift is highly outdated, but quite detailed¹. And their last news items is also a time ago². But they do care about free games as well and they certainly do not do this for money³. I can try to ask them on IRC on what would be required in order to help updating those pages and probably giving out a up-to-date news item about.

@Volki: Have you been playing PlaneShift recently? While a challenge is to have enough other people to play with when logging in at some random time, during the regular GM events hosted by Uadjet each Saturday there is a very good quality RP going on between player based characters and GMPCs (Game Master Played Characters) as well as other player based characters. Consistently so! I really look forward to those Saturday evenings!

General Discussion / Re: Lore Behind your pet name
« on: January 03, 2025, 05:40:41 pm »
While I came up with nice names for Damola's familiars I did not think of a lore behind them.

The names just sounded nice, there was no other criteria for them other than to fit the gender I imagined for each familiar.

General Discussion / Re: Plants, thru the dome
« on: January 03, 2025, 05:38:09 pm »
Yeah, one issue is that Yliakum in PSUnreal is just so much bigger than in Crystalspace based PlaneShift.

Often patches of harvest-able plants are quite tiny. Just a small spot where they are all growing a bit crowded even. Maybe spread out some of the locations a bit more so it becomes more difficult to run past a location without noticing it?

Also more spots in general would be great.

Plants may not grow in the same space all the time. But implementing some variation over time could be challenging.

As for concrete location would need to run around quite a bit and log positions to that I can provide accurate information.

Thank you a ton for the new update, Talad!  \\o//

I truly appreciate the new locomotion system which fixes those various annoying issues we had with 0.7.45!

Have a Happy and Peaceful New Year Talad and everyone else!

I like the new harvesting animation!  :)

Regarding "Changed all Guildhouses to have ground as real mesh (may fix the fall through on login?)": Unfortunately does not appear to be fixed there on Linux. So I need to guide Damola through DR once again as unfortunately "/unstick" does not work in this case: "Moving back to valid position in sector (null) sector…". I find that "null" suspicious. Will "park" here outside of buildings for now, when I log out.

As an interesting observation: Once I type "/die", Damola briefly appears at the right location within the guild house before being teleported to DR.

For me the new idea still does not accommodate for people who have been born in Yliakum.

Did you create a Kran or Lemur in PSUnreal? The gods are asking you to go to the Dryken Plane and help other people coming to Yliakum. Similarly for other people born in Yliakum it will happen the same thing. Practically it's hard for me to create a different storyline/char creation only for that. If I change the Dryken Plane significantly, I will have to adapt again for Kran and Lemur.

Hmmm, that may work as a lore for visiting Dryken Plane even if you are born on Yliakum. Although your char probably won't be asked to go there as a new born, but rather when your char has grown up to an adult. I gotta create a Kran or Lemur to see how that works for me. As for other races… if one decides to be born in Yliakum, they just have to override the initial story with what they see fit. Maybe it can work this way…
