It would be kind of silly to put a lot of work into complicated models before the rendered is closer to being done.  Data formats and stuff can change pretty often in projects like this.  Also, I think there are a lot of optimizations left to be done before the game is finished; MB doesn\'t run really smoothly on a lot of machines as it is.  Finally, remember that Planeshift is built on top of the Crystal Space 3D game development library.  That is a very active project, and all the improvements made to it will carry over more-or-less directly to PS.

So don\'t worry about the graphics; I think the scenery looks pretty good already (try running it at 1280x1024 or higher if you have the hardware), and it\'s still just at the pre-alpha stage.  They\'ll be even better when the actual game is ready to start.

...  you do understand that consentual PvP duals and guild fighting will be the only way to PvP in Planeshift right?  That is not debateable in the slighest.
Yes, that is exactly the premise I based my comments on.  And I wouldn\'t want it any other way.  Actually, I\'m even working off the possibly-incorrect premise that these duels (and BTW people, that\'s \"duel\", not \"dual\") will only be fought in some central arenas or whatnot, not just out in any old cave where two toughs stumble into each other.  I\'m also assuming that it will be a choice to fight just for fun, or to show off, without grave consequences for the loser, and/or that some stats will be kept about who\'s the best fighter in the arenas.  So just don\'t challenge people who are doing much better than you if you want a chance to win.

The problem is that the duelists need some way to gage their strength versus the other persons and Planeshift doesn\'t have the ease of just telling levels like other games.
And my point is that I don\'t really see how it will be a huge problem.  Of course, I haven\'t seen much real information other than \"no free PvP\" and \"no levels\" (both commendable ideas IMO), so I might just be full of it.

First off, there\'s no reason that \"Yliakum\" can\'t refer to both the entire world and a city within it.  Mexico, Panama, Guatemala, and the US states of New York and Oklahoma all have major cities of the same name, and the residents seem to deal with it just fine.  Of course, I don\'t know if this is really what the devs intend (the whole overview is sort of unclear), but it isn\'t unthinkable.  Would be nice to have some clarification from the admins.

Second, from the overview, \"...the stalactite belief is only theory devised by some Xacha scientists and has not been proven yet\".  (Near the bottom, under the \"Waste\" heading)  What to make of this?  Are the devs leaving themselves an out if they decide the stalactite idea is silly or if they need more room to expand the world later?  (Personally, I think the idea of an entirely underground world with levels and huge caverns is really, really cool, but the stalactite thing seems a little silly.  But that\'s really neither here nor there.)

Finally, Skain: in medieval terms, a large city was only a few tens of thousand people.  One assumes that all the players and visible NPCs make up only a fraction of the world\'s total population.  I would hope that in the final world, the major cities are considerably larger than Hydlaa, but they don\'t need to rival Tokyo to be realistic cities.

I think a \"consider\" command is necessary... or maybe not even a separate command; just look at a player/monster and it tells you how \"tough\" he/she/it appears.  The heuristics for this would be pretty simple; lots of MUDs do it.  It would, of course, be cool for players to have a \"sandbag\" ability to fool other players.

As to the problem of knowing who not to challenge to a duel, I assume there will be an option of dueling just for sport, without killing or property changing hands.  If this is done (and the whole \"arena\" idea seems kind of silly otherwise), it just seems obvious to keep a persistent ranking table.  So you\'ll know not to challenge guys with ranks way higher than yours, and if you do, all you\'ll get out of your severe thrashing is embarrased.

Nooooooo!  Mandatory sleep, IMNSHO, is way on the wrong side of the how-much-realism-should-there-be boundary.  Should characters have to take bathroom breaks every hour?  Eat a well balanced diet or your character gets fat?  No thanks.  It would be cool to be able to rest/sleep and regain health/stamina faster, though.

Back on-topic, there definitely needs to be a better trade system than just shouting.  Running auctions/trades though a central system (maybe the guilds) would be good.  But hiring hordes of miners/salesmen/tax accountants to run your tiny commercial empire?  Give me a break; this isn\'t Warcraft, people.

Hmmm... seems that my hardware is flaking out on me.  Free hint: if your client is crashing all the time, try disabling all the stuff like \"AGPFastWrite\" and \"EnablePageFlip\" in your XF86Config file.  Big improvement.  Then send me some new RAM and a new video card, dammit.

That said, Planeshift looks jaw-droppingly amazing in 1280x1024x30fps.

I think it would be pretty interesting to actually see some stats on how many players are actually using Linux.  I would guess it is pretty high, but still a substantial minority.  Any admins care to share?

Word up, hook.  Gentoo Linux is The Only OS That Really Matters.

Even Billy G admits that 5% of Windows systems crash more than twice a day!
And the US DOHS says that Microsoft OS\'s can\'t be trusted (not that it stops those clowns from buying $90 million worth of crap from Redmond).

Red Hat is awful.  Maybe useful for big companies who want a support contract and have an irrational fear of IBM.

Debian is ok if you don\'t mind being three years behind the bleeding-edge.

Mandrake is a decent option for newbies who want things to Just Work.

Gentoo rocks my butt.  Any Linux user who doesn\'t mind getting their hands a little bit dirty and owns a reasonably fast computer owes it to themself to try it.

Not unless you think PvP means *only* PvP.  :D One assumes there will be critters and stuff to tussle with.

This doc seems kind of... content-free.  Will combat be turn-based, or hard real-time?  Will all battles be 1-on-1?  I don\'t see how magic, ranged weapons, &c fit into combat.  Clearly this is just a very early design doc, but it would be nice to get a more detailed word from the devs on what combat will be like.  It\'s kind of hard to have interesting converstations with no information.

I don\'t think there\'s much danger of Planeshift being Quake-with-stats (which would suck), but dice-rolling without much interaction gets boring quick.  I\'m not a huge gamer, so I don\'t know a lot of games to compare against, but I\'d like to see a combat system in the spirit (spirit, mind you, not a copy of the mechanics) of the Final Fantasy games: soft real-time and very interactive, but focued on tactics, stats, and teamwork rather than twitchy reflexes and button-mashing.

Umm... would you mind telling us how?

I have to run the client once with \"-relight\" to get it to run at all, and it still crashes all the time when I\'m using OpenGL.  Is the Linux client this flaky for everyone, or is it a problem with my setup (Gentoo, glibc 2.3.2-r1, xfree 4.3.0-r2, Radeon 8500 with xfree-drm drivers)?

Try

\"CRYSTAL=/opt/crystal CEL=/opt/crystal/bin ./psclient-bin\"

Worked for me, anyway.  If you have CS installed in some other weird place, change the directories.  If this works, edit \"psclient\" (which is just a tiny shell script) so that these variables are set right.

Why do these variables point to ./ in the precompiled tarball, anyway?  I can\'t see how that would be correct for anyone.

Wheeee!  Thanks!  I\'m a Gentoo guy, too.  Cool that the devs seem to care about the Linux client as much as the Windows one.
