Technical Help: Problems BEFORE entering the game /

It\'s normal when that happens, it has to calculate the lighting in the world and that might take 5-30 minutes, depending on your PC.

At least you have enough time to think now before posting. At home, that is.

Considering the fact that trojans can be written in BASIC even, I don\'t even consider them to be a virus. The Blaster worm is a real virus, and I respect the person who created such a virus, together with many others viruses I\'m fixing these days. (The company I work, a school, currently doesn\'t have the money to buy a virus scanner license...damn budget) I mean, writing such viruses is incredible. Sure, they don\'t have a life (Although, define life...), and creating viruses that destroy your PC is wrong, but the way they program them is rather impressive. In some cases, that is. I once had to fix a virus that didn\'t allow me to install a virus scanner or some other kind of fix that allowed me to remove it.

P.S. And please, don\'t flame me now. I\'m not a virus lover, I just respect the way they program them.

And don\'t forget about licenses and copyrights. No way I want to see PlaneShift cooperate with Microsoft or AOL.

But the big question would be... Would you like to be captured? Only if I was roleplaying a slave I would allow it.

Excuse me for posting a idea that should belong in the Wish List forum, but since we\'re talking about it in this topic, I might as well type it.

The best way to apply skinning should be the Ultima Online tactic. \"Use knife on corpse, recieve skin\" That simple, yet at the same time it\'s realistic as well. To make things interesting, and to use the system PlaneShift uses, you could implement a \"Anatomy\" skill which is used to calculate the chance you actually recieve a skin. (And increase the attack damage you can do, since you\'ll also learn about the weak spots of a creature) The same things could be used with bones, which could later be used to create a weapon (Bone club? Perhaps a dagger) or a piece of armor (Bone shield?) using the Tailoring skill.

And please, no newbie areas. Just use the \"farther away = harder\" system if possible.

Before I can even try to help you out, I need to know a few things.

1. Windows/Linux?
2. Which browser?
3. When does the problem occur?
4. How exactly do you download it? (The steps you do to download the files)
5. Do you use a download manager?

Wish list / "Monsters?"
« on: September 17, 2003, 08:10:33 am »
I\'ve been wondering something for a long time. Why are monsters dangerous? Should they be dangerous? Don\'t monsters posses a brain as well?

Even monsters have to eat, sleep and live somewhere. Why should they always attack you? Because you\'re a player? What if you don\'t want to attack? What if you try to make peace with the monster? Why is it ALWAYS impossible? There is always a chance.

Perhaps that it doesn\'t make much sense to anyone here, but I would like to see monsters that are intelligent for a change. Alright, so we got this large killer lizard, and it\'s obvious it wants to attack you. Why? We don\'t know. All it does is try to kill you. Why? No reason.

A monster should have a reason to do something. Was it protecting its territory? Is he hungry? Did you disturb his nap/meal? If so, show us the proof that he was doing so. No \"he was disturbed during his meal\" without a corpse lying around. A corpse of a animal that actually was killed by it.

What I seek is realism, and without the true proof of something there is none. If you disturbed a monster during his sleep, shouldn\'t he be a little weaker then usual?

These things are all small details, I don\'t expect them to appear in PlaneShift, but I just wanted to tell you all that this is what we need. Details and realism.

Theoratically, a normal modem should do the trick, although I suggest a cable (128k/256k) modem or perhaps even a ADSL modem (768k/1024k) if you want to play without lag, that is. Even then, you will still experience lag because of the high server load sometimes.

You could use a Diablo 2-like system where both players must be hostile towards each other before they can engage each other. Except of course this system would only be used in the world itself.

Arena fights and competitions would automatically become full PvP of course, so that everyone would be able to engage each other.

Or... you could use a certain system where you turn PK on and off.
Example, Bob kills John Doe, but wants to stop PKing for today and is forced to wait for 15 minutes (Just an example) before he can turn PKing off again.

Luckily enough, it remembers all the fields you already filled when you want to change your character name. With my client that is, at least.
