For your information, just because they have posted over 1000 times, does not mean they are always right.  Each of the 3 posts you mention were made with little or no background info on the topic.  This thread is to discuse a better type of movement and action UI, something that you, the 2 devs/gms, and anyone else who mentions ranting has for some reason decided that we hate the game for the reason that the control system sucks and we are too lazy to change the key binds.
Which is dumb and anyone who reads the thread will find that the views are not slanted that way at all.

But of course, if everyone continues to read just the last few posts and reply with that information, then I will constantly be posting dumb messages like this one to make you aware.

As the previous posts say:
\"The game should have an easy mouse interface where the mouse icons reflect that actions the player can take. If the mouse is over a rat, a sword would be nice, then when the user clicks with the sword icon, it attacks. For an item, a hand would be good, then a click would pick it up. Simple.\"

There has never been any whining so far, its just something a couple people decided to type.  A mod to do what we are discussing would change the entire game..   As also mentioned before, it is not a problem of changing the key binds, or changing the way they bind keys.

I get the feeling that Im going to need to place that quote into my sig so that people will always know whats going on.

I do not understand how using two computing interfaces simultaeneously is a problem.  However, your dislike of it is neither an excuse nor a justification of ranting on your part.  I suggest you learn to live with what you have, considering that the program offered to you, at no cost, is a technical demonstration.
If you were serious in your intent to have such a system implemented for the good of the community, you would have taken the three or so seconds required to select the \"wishlist\" forum before intiating your topic.

Furthurmore, your attitude, in particular your stubborness to accept solutions given to you, is highly detrimental to the promotion of this concept for implementation.  Your arrogance is problematic as well.
implying insult to persons whose opinion you wish to change will do nothing more than force them into a more \'dug-in\' position.  That is not wisdom.
If you wish to consult with me relating to any part of this post, I suggest you do so via a private message.

Good day, sir.

lol, for some reason you still think that I am insulting the game.  No, if i wanted to do that I would say,
\"W0w, ths g4me 5uxors b3c4se i h8 thse soopid cntrls!\"

Once again, to try and make you understand, I started this topic to propose a different interface.  It qualifies under discussion because here we are discussing the problem and giving contrustive critisism of ideas.  While people like you think that I am attacking this gaming community.  I just love to chat with people like you, you misconstrue all points for the sake of argument.

I HAVE changed the key maps, I offered this new system for discussion in the discussion forum.  In no way have I whined, complained, or insulted any part of the game.  And \"being a tech demo\" does not make it unchangable.

But, if you really think that discussing a change is a personal attack, then I suggest you make date with some people and find out what exactly ranting and insulting is.

EDIT:
And FYI, I dont need tips from people like you on how to argue.  I was not trying to \'change your mind\' for ive talked with many people exactly like you and I know that theres no way in hell that you will change your mind or concede a misunderstanding.  So its totally acceptable for you to quote my first sentace and argue about that again.  Ive seen it many times.

Well, thats true, I could map mouse1 to attack things..  that would be AWESOME! Except when I want to try and do something else.  Like clicking on someone.

Brilliant, but first you must point out how to make the game attack a rat if I double click on it.

There are greater problems with this game then remapping the keys will fix

I dont get how you guys can call a system where you have to use 2 hands to move your character good.  Sure you can map out wasd to turn and stuff for you, but then you have to constantly hold down control just to move the camera around, or hold down shift to make yourself run.  A system like morrowind would be so much better.

And another problem I thought of is that the game is based a lot on a point and click interface.  Unlike other games where you can double click an enemy to attack, you have to press a button somewhere on the hud.  Which is really annoying when you are being attacked and you have to go find a button.

The optimal system for a rpg is either fps style, or if people dont like it, then a very simple click and goto, or, 3rd person movements with camera rotating via mouse control.

For this game, the best thing would be

w - forward
a - side step left
s - back
d - side step right

mouse rotates camera when right click is pressed
and controls game play with different mouse pointers.

A very good example of this is neverwinter nights.

General Discussion / Please rework movement controls
« on: December 31, 2004, 07:23:34 am »
I was really frustrated with this new version from the moment I tryed to move.  I played molecular blue and I know you didnt really change the movement style via keypresses, but the ctrl/mouse1 and 2 interface is kind of annoying and hard to use.  Being that this game is more point and click oriented now, I felt more attacted to this method, but I continued to stuggle with the controls.  My sugestion would be to get rid of the ctrl presses and go straight to wasd and mouse moves like all the other ORPGs and single games like Morrowind.  It would be so much better...

Also, you need someway to change the screen resolution, or atleast, a redesign of the UI so that it doesnt feel crowded and cramped.  I felt totally surronded and only had a few square inches of space to view with.

Thats what really jumped out at me after playing for a little while.

General Discussion / Prices of Items!!!

Holy cow!  Those items are expensive!  How can any casual players aford that!  I know it wont stay like that, but man, no one but the top ten people will be able to get anything!  And they probably wont get any either, because they\'d take a huge hit in crystal levels.   And lower their position in the stats.

Thanks

I\'m still lokking around the SF site for a cure to my problem.  I tried putting these lines into the command line... option:

cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@cvs.planeshift.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/planeshift login

cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anonymous@cvs.planeshift.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/planeshift co planeshift

and this is exaclty what I get back from WinCVS, from startup to failure.

Python 2.2.2 (#37, Oct 14 2002, 17:02:34) [MSC 32 bit (Intel)] on win32
CVSROOT: anonymous@cvs.planeshift.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/planeshift (password authentication)
cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@cvs.planeshift.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/planeshift login
\\n
\\ncvs -z3 -d:pserver:anonymous@cvs.planeshift.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/planeshift co planeshift

***** CVS exited normally with code 0 *****

Am I putting in the wrong command line or am I way off course?

I just starting tinkering with the WinCVS program after I posted last.  I discovered that I can connect to: anonymous@cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/planeshift but this is what the window says after I press enter at the \"Please enter a password\" screen.

cvs -d :pserver:anonymous@cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/planeshift login
Logging in to :pserver:anonymous@cvs.sourceforge.net:2401/cvsroot/planeshift

(**right here it asks for my password then,**)

***** CVS exited normally with code 0 *****

it justs exits with exit code 0.  I know that a rejected password or username gets an exit code of 1, so what am I still doing wrong?

Ok, I went there and read thier entire turtoial on setting up putty, wincvs and everything.  But I keep on gettign stuck on the \"Testing automated authentication\" step.  It keeps on asking me for a password when it shouldn\'t.  So I looked at the troubleshooting page and I find that I have to have a developers acount.  How do I get a developers acount?  Then I tried that loggin in as anonymous like it says in the CVS part of the Planeshift main page.  But it wants a password to.  The site just says to press enter when it asks for one but that didn\'t work either.  What am I doing wrong?   ?(
