This idea reminds me of certain things of the use of the One Power in Robert Jordan\'s The Wheel of Time books.
In the books, weaves (spells) can be maintained (increasing the power of the weave but severely limiting the casting of simultaneous weaves, only powerful and experienced Aes Sedai (mages) can maintain more than a handfull of lesser weaves), or tied off (using up more strength, and sacrificing power for drasticaly increased effect times).
Note that some weaves can only be maintained (Travelling (portals) ), others can only be tied off (Keepings (stasis) ), others are one-shot weaves (Healing)
There is also the rare skill of making Ter\'angreal (magic items, some work only when chanelled (focusing spell energy) through), Angreal (magic items that increase the user\'s ability to channel) , and Sa\'angreal (Magic items that drastically increase the user\'s ability, with one of the more powerful ones a single user could wipe out a small town)

heh don\'t know how much (if any) relevance this has.

Yes, the proper notation for dice is \"# d#\", for exaple to denote say, 3, 10 sided dice you would write: \"3 d10\".

I too would love to help Beta Test the OS X release. If you need them, here are my system specs:

  Machine Model: Power Mac G5
  CPU Type: PowerPC 970  (2.2)
  Number Of CPUs:   2
  CPU Speed: 2 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU):  512 KB
  Memory: 1 GB
  Bus Speed:    1 GHz
  System:   Mac OS 10.3.2
Graphics Card: ATI Radeon 9600 Pro
  Monitor: Viewsonic P95f+b

*note* If you\'re looking for a monitor, this one kicks. It can support up to 2048 x 1536 at 60 Hertz, and 1280 x 960 at an amazing 100 Hertz.
And it\'s black!

Ah, I was confused ;)

Hmm, true.
How about the casters have to work together (withing toutching distance? Within a magic circle?) to cast a combined spell, which requires certain skills to have any chance of sucess. If the spells failed to combine (if that was the intention) various effects could happen: Spells cast normally, Spells cancel each other, spells explode causing massive damage (intentionally? hmm, one sees possibilities)

mmm, debate... feel the ideas flow...

I did search, and I am fairly certain that this has not been suggested before.

Elscouta:
1.1: The IC explanation would be that you modify the underlying struture of the spells, producing a new spell, so only one spell is being cast.

1.2 Yes, alternatively.

Note: Scratch 1.1, 1.2/3 is better.

1.3 if 1.2 is yes, which makes more sense, and, if you think about it, is much more flexible for different magic systems. (the spells THEMSELVES combine, after, or during casting)

2.1 Yes, i\'ll agree that hard limits are bad.

at the same time not being too much below the resulting spell level.

how do you mean? The resuting spell is separate from the player.

Wish list / Combining Spells
« on: February 17, 2004, 06:28:58 pm »
Here\'s the key points my idea:

1. Combine spells to produce different effects.
Combine 2 or more spells to \"combine\" their effects, eg. :
Spell: Wall of Force
Effect: Creates a 12 x 10 x 2 ft. solid transparent wall.

Spell: Flame
Effect: Creates a small sphere of fire in the hand of the caster, which can then be thrown at target.

Combine these two:

Spell: Wall of Fire
Effect: Creates a 12 x 10 x 2 ft. solid flaming wall, anyone within 5 ft. suffers 4 pts. heat damage / sec

Ect.
I can think of many useful combinations, such as: Hold, Lightning. Circle of Power, Wall of Force. Sphere of Captivity, Lightning.

2. Number of spells that can be combined limited by level.
Combine 2 spells at Level 10 (or equvilant)
Combine 3 spells at level 25
ect.

Questions? Comments? Flames? I\'d like some feedback people!

Hey Xhalthar, just to let you know that your post comes dangerously close to mac-bashing, by implying that developing the game for mac is not worth the devs time.

:)
Cheers,

Hey, just to let you know, I\'ve gotten Liero working in Win XP. A bit extreme, but here\'s how:
1. Boot into Safe Mode with Command Prompt: Restart, then begin tapping F8 as soon as the BIOS is loaded. Select \"Safe mode with command prompt\" from the menu.
2. You\'ll see a dos command line, navigate to Liero and run it.
3. Enjoy.
