ok? :)

PS. these are the words from the devs..

Does that mean ever or not at this time.

Wouldn\'t it be possible to have a portal that goes to another world that is cold (in the far future)?

if it could suck in the light around it what would stop it from sucking off your hand or you for a lack of better words. in fact it should suck in the whole lake around it. if it was as dense as to keep people glued down on the ground i doubt anyone would live to say they touched it or even saw it for that matter.

It\'s not from the site, I made it up.

It only seems to suck in the light because it\'s very very dark. Basicly so dark you can\'t see it, you can only see what\'s around it, kind of like a black hole although it does not suck things in.
The point is usually black crystals are shiny and give off a glare or reflection around light, where this black crystal does not.

Since the black crystal is shrouded in darkness deep under water it doesn\'t have to be put in the game, at least not yet.
I thought it would add something interesting to the story with the side effect of making the physics make sense.

The first time finding the exit is a little tricky, but once you figure it out it\'s easy.

13. I\'ve fallen under the temple into some kind of cave and I\'m lost! Help!
You\'re not lost, you just didn\'t expect to have to find your own way back out. I suggest you explore this cave a little first- you\'re more likely to find crystals down here than in the town (simply because they\'re less hidden, sometimes spawning in the middle of a path). To get out of the labyrinth, find the room on the bottom level which has many rows of tall pillars and a green, rocky floor. Starting from either entrance to this room, head over to the left-hand staircase and climb it. Look around up there and you\'ll see a corridor which leads to more stairs up. It doesn\'t matter which direction you take from here- either way, you\'ll end up back at the surface.

How about this:

\"In the shadowed depths below the lake Kadaikos lies a great black crystal. Legends say it contains the force that binds the people to the earth. The few who have seen it saw it gives off not light or color, it seems like it will even suck in any light around it. The even fewer who have touched it say it is the most dense object ever discovered and seems to be indestructible. \"

Since it is very dense it has a huge mass and thus lots of gravity. Science part solved.

I think it also fits into the world very well.
It would be located in the middle of Kadaikos (it would be deep under water in darkness so it\'s not easily visible), basicly an inverse of the Azure/Sapphire Crystal.

As the Azure/Sapphire Crystal represents life I think this black crystal can represent death.
Firstly it\'s shrouded in darkness.
There is a very good metafore for life and death, you can kind of see it in the map of the world. Water (which represents life) starts at the Azure/Sapphire Crystal (which represents giving life aka birth) and slowly flows and drips through the caves until it arrives at Kadaikos (which represents the collective lifes of the world) and the black crystal (which represents death).

It needs to be polished alittle, but I think it will work.

Wish list / Stalactite levels, different environments
« on: March 13, 2004, 01:56:22 am »
I was looking at the map of the PlaneShift world (in this thread) and noticed that the Stalactite (Yliakum) had different levels.
That gave me an idea, why don\'t the different levels have different environments. Like one level is like the current level, ones a tropical jungle, one has snow or is arctic, ones a desert, etc.
This would add alot of variety to the game and would allow more RPing potential.

I think it\'s (Brazilian?) Portuguese (which I don\'t know) and I can\'t get a good translation, I tried a few tranlators.

He is either saying:

1. Are there any other players from Brazil

2. He\'s looking for someone he knows

3. He\'s asking about NPCs

You could always take donations to pay for servers. I wouldn\'t mind paying a few $ to have a fast US server.

Or you could always sell stuff at cost. It would help promote PS and give people something in the real world.

But IRL peoples voices sound different. So even if a crowd of people you\'ve never met before are talking you can tell who says what.
There is no way to replicate this in game, so you have to display name in chat or you won\'t know who said what.
It\'s really a balance issue.

You could always give everyone name tags, so there is a reason they know everyones name.
Rogues could then take off their name tags to hide their name.

I don\'t think a boxed version would work just yet. The CD and manual would be out dated too quick. But in the future it may work.

However something like T-shirts or posters (maybe maps?) would be easier to have made.

Maybe there could be player built boats, it could use wood cutting and carpentry skills, maybe have  it require a bunch of people or a guild to make.
Or if you have low skills in those areas or are alone you could build a cheap raft.

Those are some interesting ideas.

However there are a few problems.
Storeing the file on your computer would not work it you use more then one computer, use a cyber cafe, or if you re-format.
It would make shouting and non-private chats impossible (as said above).
Untill there is more customization it will be very hard to find a person (or the right person) if everyone looks the same.

Untill a better solution is found the easiet and best thing would be to have an on/off switch for showing your name (but it would still show up in chat).
You could also have an option not to show your name in private chat. So as long as you don\'t say anything out of private chat  your name is hidden.
Maybe have an option to only show your name to people on your friends list or in your guild, since they are already in the database it would not use any other space.
This way people have a choice if they want to show their name or not, but there wouldn\'t be so many problems

If you can\'t think of a name what you can do is take a couple of everyday words or names , put them together, and spell them backwards.

For example lastandroid spelled backwards is Diordnatsal, which sounds like a fantasy name.

Single Author Stories / LastAndroid's backstory
« on: March 03, 2004, 04:47:56 am »
This is the backstory for my character LastAndroid. It\'s not just for PlaneShift, but it works here too. It\'s only a first draft and I hope to expand on it.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

LastAndroid\'s backstory

This story begins far away on a technologically advanced planet. There computers and robots are everywhere. They are in everything you can see and do any thing you can think of. In an advance robotics labs droids are made to serve man, but more is going on then is know by the public. Deep within the shadows of restricted areas secretive research is taking place. Scientists are working to create an artificial man.
Some work on genetic engineering and on combining metal and flesh. Others work on creating an Artificial Intelligence, a true mind.
The day comes when they finally achieve their goal;  part machine, part man, an Android. All their hard work was a huge success. The android seemed to be perfectly human, in fact it was more the human. It was stronger, faster, and smarter then any man. Unfortunately it was not useful for military or espionage work because it was too human; it had a sense of decency, a sense of right and wrong, and quite possibly a soul.
Newer androids were produced that were limited in function, however they were not true AIs and thus could not compare to the original. They where sent out anyway. The first android was not wasted however, it was put to work in the labs. It excelled at this work. In fact few knew that it was not truly human.

As time passed the other androids were begining to be discovered. When the media started to report on it there was a huge public outcry. Facing great pressure the government was forced to create a ban on androids and thus sent out an order for all of them to be destroyed. Facing the lose of their jobs and possible legal ramifications the scientists had a meeting to decide what to do. Thats when they discovered that not all the the androids were destroyed, the original still remained. They decided they had to protect the last android and make sure it would survive. Since they had no reason to stay and nothing left to loose they decided to flee the planet.

Since they had access to the most advanced technology in the world they constructed a spacecraft that could not be matched. They went faster and farther then anyone before them, that way they could be sure they would not be chased. Unfortunately like all unproven technology there were a few bugs and glitches. During their journey a malfunction caused an explosion which crippled the ship. If they did not find a place to land soon all would be lost. Luckily they happened upon a planet. Even luckier it was inhabitable, in fact it was an unspoiled paradise. They slowly moved toward the planet being as careful as possible. Unfortunately they were not careful enough. When they started to enter the atmosphere their ship\'s engines failed, sending them speeding toward the ground. The ship crashed with great force, carving a fiery crater in the ground.

The last android awoke in a forest, it had been thrown from the wreckage. After it regained it\'s senses and strength it looked over the crater and burnt ruins of what was once the ship. Not much had survived the crash, however there were signs there may have been survivors. The last android then decided to explore the planet in hopes of finding his creators. He soon discovered that this world was inhabited by primitive races, in what would be considered a medieval period.
He decided the only thing he could do is join the society. The planets inhabitants did not know what a computer is let alone an android, so he kept that fact to himself. To everyone else he was a normal (although a bit strange) person.

He however never forgot his creators or the other androids. He decided to take the name Android as a sign of his past. Since the word android didn\'t exist, no one knew it\'s true meaning. He decide that his first name would be Last to signify that he is the last of his kind, and also because he will outlast everyone and thus is destined to be alone.
Thats the story of the first and Last Android.

I think I found them all.

Thanks!

Newbie Help (Start Here) / NPCs
« on: March 01, 2004, 08:53:12 pm »
I\'m new and since the NPCs have been gone lately I have never seen them.

So is there a way to tell them apart from players. I know where they are supposed to be, but sometimes people are standing there.
I already made the mistake of thinking a person was a NPC, luckily he was nice and told me their server was down.
