I, for one, will drop this game in an instant if it goes hack \'n\' slash.

Nanaki, your theory is flawed.  The kind of person that would perform such a cowardly act doesn\'t care about honor and likely lacks even a grasp of the concept of such.  Penalization should be made, but the true trick is to find a way of doing it without simultaneously harming the unlucky few that get disconned.

Anyone familar with the pencil and paper RPG from White Wolf called Werewolf: The Apocalypse will know this one.  In the game there are special weapons called \"fetishes\".  These weapons are imbued with a nature spirit trapped within.  It gives them magickal powers as well as makes them more powerful and durable.  One possibility for improvement over time could be that it becomes more effective against the types of creatures you fight most often, or perhaps in the case of armor of a similar nature offering better defence against the creatures you fight.  I agree it should be either very rare, or just make it extremely difficult to create.  But I think it could be very fun.  I do like the idea of it saying \"that thing\'s a waste of time, don\'t tarnish my steel.\"  And I don\'t know why you\'re saying it\'s giving warriors specifically familiars, why can\'t all classes have weapons like that?  I think the best way to do them would be to have it as a very high level skill in whatever sphere of magick covers enchantment.  It would definitely add some fun to high-level characters\' play.  Sides, how funny would it be to be in a tavern or something and seeing in the text box a warrior arguing with his sword and the sword arguing back?  I don\'t know about all of you, but that could prove quite amusing.

Thought that\'s what I was saying, lol.  Noob butchering isn\'t cool in any way, shape, or form.

PvP,PK and Thieving /

Asheron\'s Call has an interesting PvP system.  You touch an evil shrine and you become PvP.  In order to go back to PvM mode, you must have NOT engaged in any kind of PvP (that means not even one swing or spell targeting a player, unless it\'s a buff, obviously) for 24 hours in-game (not game time, not 24 hours, but 24 RL hours of in-game PLAY), and then to touch a good shrine.  This prevents you from becoming PvP, killing someone, then immediately going PvM to prevent reprisal.

For this game, I think that PvP shouldn\'t be possible if you\'re under a certain level (to prevent the noobs from being slaughtered and generally picked upon.)  After that, there should be a level range that you can PvP with, say 5 levels or so in either direction (not sure how much of a power difference there are between levels yet, I have to get someone to download the client for me to play since I have dial-up).  This makes it so you don\'t have the vets preying upon the lower level characters (a major problem with most PvP, in my opinion.)  In all cases, PvP mode should be an option, if I don\'t want to have to deal with it, it shouldn\'t be forced on me (takes away from the realism which I don\'t like, but it\'s for the best since PvP can really ruin some people\'s enjoyment of the game.  I remember in the old online NWN on AO-Hell many times someone asked for help in a battle, I\'d go in and help, and as soon as the monsters were dead the SOBs would turn around, gang up, and kill me; it really killed some of my enjoyment of the game.)

Later on, perhaps a fighting-game style combo system could be implemented (as a toggle, say you could use \"automatic\" to use that system described by the previous poster, and a \"manual\" to use a mortal kombat style system for those users with the bandwidth to be able to use it effectively.  I know I\'d like that if I had the bandwidth for it).

I disagree completely.  If you\'re going to allow ANY form of PKing, you should make it so ANYONE can kill ANYONE else.  The penalties for death should be no different from normal (though if the person killed is of lower level, they drop less items, if the person killed is of a higher level than the killer then more is dropped; this discourages powerful characters from randomly killing people because they can.)  You argue that it should be allowed to kill people of lower rank to prevent spying.  Well, logically, shouldn\'t that spy not only be able to defend himself, but shouldn\'t we allow everyone to kill each other so we can actually have assasination attempts on an opposing guild\'s leader?  That would certainly add realism and make things quite a bit more interesting.  What could also be interesting is \"duel mode\" of sorts.  In this mode you could challenge someone and if they accept you enter Duel Mode.  When you die in this mode, you come right back with no penalties at all, but the victor, if lower in rank, advances either one rank, or moves into the rank of the loser and the loser drops a single rank.  This would allow for a kind of wolf-pack structure to the martial or criminal guilds in which it is often the strongest or most cunning that leads.  Again, this would add realism and make things more exciting and interesting.

You have to be careful about how this is done though.  I know I never like it if I die because my conn is dropped (I use AOL, because I\'m not the one paying for it; needless to say I get kicked off a lot).  But I do agree something must be done to prevent people from intentionally logging out as they\'re about to die.

I posted this in the Official Feature Requests thread, but I figured I\'d copy it to here.

Perhaps something similar to FFXI\'s implementation for housing could be used.  Have a gate/portal that leads to just your hose, have one that leads to a hallway or something with glass doors that look out on the houses of your buddies, these doors being portals to their houses.  The individual houses could exist in say a 1 acre space that\'s walled in on all sides and exists technically outside of the actual world.  By doing this space never runs out (physical space anyway, disk space will add up but that will happen either way), and you make it so anyone can have a house (which I feel should be the case, because it\'s not fair for only some people to get houses and the people that didn\'t start the game as soon as others are just out of luck.)

General Discussion / Houses, Mansions, and Castles
« on: March 20, 2004, 07:23:53 pm »
I didn\'t notice another thread addressing this, so I thought I\'d start one.  I\'m curious as to how and when this feature will be implemented?  It was one of the most interesting features of Asheron\'s Call, but the implementation of it there prevented most people from having a house (they only made so many and everyone already owned them.)  Is there some way of doing it so that anyone and as many people as want to can have a house or castle and such? (obviously the complexity of the building would be dependant upon status/level/assets)  I now I would certainly love to have an in-game home to invite my in-game friends over to and have a small party.  Anybody post any info they have or addition suggestions on implementation.
