Roleplaying (Communitive Storywriting) / A small note nailed on a tree
« on: April 22, 2006, 11:52:10 am »
This is a small note nailed on a tree in front of Harnquist\'s shop. If, by chance, you happen to walk by this tree you will be able to read it.

    Lexa,

I don\'t know if you will ever see this note. Harnquist
did not let me put it inside. If it rains it will certainly
be washed away. I did not see you the other day and
do not know what happened to you. I did not know how
to contact you. I hope you will see this note. I\'m sorry
if I had to leave you like this; those mining days do not
    do me any good.

    Hope you\'re well.

    -Gellule

[ Keep in mind that roleplaying rules apply: if you do not know any of the characters, you cannot ask them anything about it -directly-. However, feel free to push your luck. ]

Not yet, if you look at this:

You will also see that there was a wipe two weeks ago...

Sweet! I\'ll try to be there with some food. Trepor hearts with pumpkin sauce, rat eyes with mushrooms...

Seytra:

Somehow I find it disturbing to package [Sorry, phone is ringing, got to go] and [An envil falls on Gellule] exactly the same way. Even if I expect people to understand what I mean in each case. Maybe you will understand my problem if I tell you that OOC means Out Of Context to me and not Out Of Character.

It\'s anyway a very personal feeling that I can indeed easily resolve (for now) with Darkblade\'s \"/me : An envil falls on Gellule\" (Thank you Darkblade!)

And how about making \"/me:\" or \"/me,\" work? (Quite hard with the current framework, I know, I know...)

Quote
Anyway, IMO it\'s a minor change for a minor annoyance. :)

Hehe, I would never have guessed what your opinion was if it was not for the smiley...

You\'re right with the \"knowing where the message comes from\" part.
Why not add a (someone) at the end? Like this:

a very large anvil appears in the sky and falls on Ralas, killing him instantly (the evil character)

Remember that you can already have something like this with a /me:

The evil chacater watches a very large envil apppear in the sky and fall on Ralas, killing him instantly

I\'m sorry Ralas, three envils in two posts...

Wish list / Add a /desc chat command
« on: August 28, 2005, 12:54:46 am »
--- A story

Recently, Gellule (that\'s me) met Siroles (my friend) and Arg (Siroles\' pet lizard) somewhere on the path to Ojaveda.
Before fighting a bloody nasty bad consumer, Siroles had to give me Arg. I would take care of little Arg, while Silores is fighting the beast.

\"Siroles extends his arm toward Gellule, Arg runs and jumps on Gellule shoulder\"  (1)

When Silores comes back from his fight I give him back the lizard.

\"Gellule extends his arm toward Silores\"  (2)

Seeing that Silores is covered with blood and mud, the little lizard has a moment of hesitation, and finally decides to go back to Silores.

\"Arg runs on Gellule\'s shoulder and jumps back on Silores\"  (3)

--- The problem

(1) and (2) are easy to produce in chat:

/me do something
/tell someone /me do something
/guild /me do something

How about (3)?

--- The solution

We should have some sort of escape command that removes any leading statement like a \"Someone says: ...\".
We could use /desc for description.

/desc Arg runs on Gellule\'s arms

would give

Arg runs on Gellule\'s shoulder

--- Dislaimer

Any resemblance to real persons is purely coincidental.

I think I still have a hard time understanding. Tell me if I can get it right.

Written english vs. spoken english:

Gellule turns to the sign on the door of the library: \"It\'s written It is possible to read books in the library since they are available \"
Gellule turns to XpYtZ: \"Indeed! It\'s possible to read books!\"

Emphasing:

Gellule asks XpYtZ about reading books in the library: \"It\'s not possible to read the books in the library, right?\"
XpYtZ: \"You\'re wrong! It is possible!\"

If you speak always use the short phrase unless you want to emphasize the verb. If it is written english, always use the expanded version.

Just before CB, I gave away all my stuff!  I do not have any problem with people having played CB not being treated \"fairly\".

On the \"dev\" point of view, I\'d rather make sure that some people test my new features (those that require stats or things therefore money) as soon as possible to get rid of the bugs. (I agree with DaveG on that) If you or me are not part of those poeple, who cares?

We will have fun, get beers at the tavern and if we have to pay for those we will either find a way to get some money or RP for some free one. :D

I would like to come back to the conjunction issue. I have some hard time to understand what you are talking about. Maybe some examples comparing the \"with conjunction\" and the \"without conjunction\" of the same situation would help me (and my English)...

Thanks,

Rumley, do you mean something like this?

Gellule opens a heavy Ylikean dictionary and reads:

Y?lia?ke?an

adj.
  • Of, relating to, or characteristic of Yliakum or its people or culture.
  • Of or relating to the Yliakean language.

n.
  •   (used with a pl. verb) The people of Yliakum.
  •   The original language of Yliakum.
  •   A translation into or an equivalent in the Yliakean language.
  •   A course or individual class in the study of Yliakean language, literature, or composition.
  •   also yliakean

         1. The spin given to a propelled ball by striking it on one side or releasing it with a sharp twist.
         2. Bodily movement in an effort to influence the movement of a propelled object; body Yliakean.
[/list]
[/I]

:D I do like the last part (noun 5.) with the ball yliakean. Make me think about the kind of game Yliakum people play. Do they actually have any game? Hags, for sure, and...

We should come up with something better for (noun 2.). It does not reflect the various influences on our Yliakean language. Historians of Yliakum I summon your help.

Actually I will. It\'s just that I will call the language I use the Yliakean.

This thread is just to let you think about the RP name of the language we use... Your opinion?

PS: Ok, Yliakean is not a new word! (Search Yliakean = results)...

Kura, if you role play, you will survive any wipe. No doubt about that.

If are still worried, here is something that may cheer you up.

For the next pre-alpha release (or maybe sooner, who knows?), new features will be available: Multi-glyph magics, top-notch economy, etc... Do you realy believe that the devs are going to wait a few weeks for a small group of people to reach the level that will allow them to test those new features? I don\'t think so.

When we went from Molecular Blue to Crystal Blue, many of the players received a tribute to their dedication to the game (I wasn\'t one of the lucky one, I gave all my crystal away before the transition, lol). The crystals they collected was turned into trias and another mysterious gift. That\'s for the story. Now, beside dedication reward, there\'s another way to understand this \"gift\". It allowed some of the player to test some of the newly available advanced features (like magic) much sooner. I don\'t know if this was intentional. Yet, the end result is the same.

Now, think about the coming wipe? Do you realy think it is going to make a difference? Do you think it is going to ruin your game life? I don\'t...

I\'m happy, I play, and I wait for the wipe and the new release with happiness.

Wish list / Mysterious potions or the interest of not knowing too much
« on: April 11, 2005, 02:43:21 am »
For the wish, and only the wish, please jump to the end of this post, right after the short story that comes with it.

-------------------

This afternoon, Arleena Arlavin (the lady Dermorian on the tavern roof) was telling me about her potions. Telling me? Yea, right... she was not telling much. The only difference I could tell was the color of the strange suff she was selling, wihtout any idea on what the purpose of each bottle was. It\'s not that I do not trust Aleena (her red skin looks suspicious to a white Enkidukai like me), but my only hope was to find a potion master of some sort to help me pick the right stuff.

Golmir? Maybe...

Gellule : \"Hiya Golmir! May I ask you a quick question?\"
Golmir  : Greetings, you may ask, I will answer if I know the answer\"
Gellule : \"Do you have any idea what Aleena, the lady Dermorian on the tavern roof, is actually selling?\"
Golmir  : \"Well, I did not talk to her since the days of Molecular Blue\"
Gellule : \"So you don\'t have any idea what those potions are for?\"
Golmir  : For drinking for sure, but I have no idea on the effects.\"
Gellule : \"Sounds like I have to give it a try... Thanks!\"

Well, I really had to give a try. And even if Golmir had been able to tell me what the effect of each potions was, I would still be wondering if the effect would be the same today.

-------------------

Do not mention the purpose of things you can buy or find around unless its very easy to guess.
Your level of knowledge in the field related to the thing you buy/find should modify its description.
If you are not knowledgable your are bound to ask someone to buy the stuff for you or take a risk.
Buying/finding something and trying it, is not a good reason for knowing everything about it next time.
Your skills should make the difference.

- A novice comes to Aleena and try to buy a potion. They all look the same and
he/she will get a random one or maybe a good one if she likes him/her.
- A potion expert comes to Aleena and try to buy a potion. He/she will be able to pick the right stuff.

- A novice walk in the forest and finds a mushroom. He/she thought that the cooking training offered at the tavern was useless. Now, he/she has no idea if this mushroom is good or not.
- Jomed\'s best student would make the difference.

This could apply to many things: potions, weapons, spells, food, animals...

Hope that\'s not a double post. At least you got the story. ;)

-Gellule

PS: Hehe... I gave it a try. I bought a potion, and drank it: no idea what it did to me. Tasted good though. :D

Technical Help: IN GAME bugs (after loading world) /

Beerke,

If you have a CVS version of planeshift, try to disable the two variables $CRYSTAL and $CEL that you must have setup in order to compile from the sources.

This may help to play the downloaded version of Planeshift.
