???  Well, that was short lived!

I played a couple of days after the UE 4 Mac version became available. Now the update to UE 5 requires Mac OS 12 and my 2012 iMac can only go up to Mac OS 10.15.

Guess now I'll need to wait until I'm ready to make that Mac upgrade I've been considering.

\\o// I can finally play again on Mac after such a long time! Was starting to think it would never happen.
The UnReal engine does tax my 10 year old computer some. Makes the internal fan run the whole time but no problems yet with the game running.

I'm not a fan of the character movement having to use the mouse to look around to see where I'm going. I much preferred the movement in the old version where the scene would automatically turn toward the direction you are moving in if I am recalling that right. Has been a long time!

Now I have a new question. I've been planning to upgrade for a while now to a newer Mac with the M series processor. I believe that will run Planeshift much better but would love if someone can confirm. Has anyone run the game yet on one of these newest Mac processors?

Mac OSX Specific Issues / Catalina Mac OS 10.15 A caution and a question
« on: October 16, 2019, 04:12:56 pm »
Caution: Do not upgrade to Catalina if you want to be able to play the current version of PS.
Catalina requires 64 bit software and PS client and updater current versions are 32 bit applications.

Question: Are there any developers capable to update these or will we have to wait for the Unreal launch?

Mac OSX Specific Issues / Re: Mac Os High Sierra installation and launching

These steps have worked flawlessly for me using a 2007, then 2012 iMac and a 2012 MacBook and running systems from Mojave all the way back to Leopard and before.
I’ve tried to make everything understandable to new or inexperienced Mac users.

1. Downloaded the Standard Download Mac OSX .dmg file from https://www.planeshift.it/Download

2. Double click the PlaneShift-v0.6.3.dmg in your downloads folder or wherever you downloaded it to.

3. A quick verifying download message displays, then a window opens named PlaneShift with a folder also named PlaneShift within it.

4. Important! Drag the PlaneShift folder out of this window to wherever you want it to be installed and to run it from.
Usually, the Applications folder is where most will want it. This action will copy the PlaneShift folder from the installer mounted .dmg disk to your place of choice. Do not attempt to run apps located inside the mounted .dmg install disk PlaneShift folder! Programs and files in this location are not writeable and will cause all sorts of problems if you try to run from there.

5. Now you can close the .dmg installer PlaneShift window and unmount the .dmg PlaneShift disk image by either dragging the disk image icon to the trash or clicking the unmount triangle next to the image name in any window sidebar. You can even throw away the downloaded .dmg file at this point unless you want to save it if ever needed to install again.

6. Now go to the new PlaneShift folder where you drag copied it to in step 4. Open the folder and you will see the psclient.app and the pslaunch.app among the files in the folder. You can make shortcuts to these files if desired in your menu doc or elsewhere.

7. pslaunch.app is an updater program where you can also set some game configurations and preferences. You may want to launch this first before the client to make sure your install is up to date.
Double click the pslaunch.app to start it up. If running for the 1st time, since this program was not downloaded from the Apple store, you will see a warning about running it. Open Apple system prefs and select to allow the program to run.

Once open, set your personal preferences under “settingsâ€, or choose “repair†to get any updates.
When repairing follow any on screen instructions and wait until the process completes. Once update completes, choose “cancel†to return to the main menu. If during the repair the program quits unexpectedly, which has often happened in my experience, see the “Trouble†section below about what to do fix things.

From here you can quit the launcher app or choose “play†to launch the “psclient.app†from within the launcher app. For first run, I would choose to quit the launcher.

8. If choosing to quit the launcher app at the end of step 7, go back to the PlaneShift folder and double click psclient.app to start the game. You may need to again go to Apple system preferences to select allow this program to run for the 1st time. Once started up, you will see the game login screen and afterward see options for creating characters and to start playing.

Trouble: pslaunch.app quit unexpectedly during running repair!

The fix, if this happens to you: look inside your PlaneShift folder and you will most like find a new file named pslaunchmacos.zip.
Move this zip file outside of the “PlaneShift†folder and unzip it.

Inside there you will find:
pslaunch.app
art folder (with pslaunch.zip inside)
data folder (with gui folder and pslaunch.xml inside it)

Move or copy the pslaunch.app, and the 2 zipped files still zipped (but not their entire folders), to the same named places/folders inside your Planeshift folder replacing only the older files of the same names.

Start the new pslaunch.app file you just placed inside the Planeshift folder
Choose “Yes†to update and the process should run until it completes, this time without crashing again!

I don't know mikuhagane, some people's systems seem to have troubles while others don't.
I'm guessing you know how to install things well enough, but just in case... after you get and uncompress the installer, you need to run the installation process. I've seen a lot of posts from people who seem to be trying to run the game from the installer file itself instead of actually running it to install the game first. That would lead to a lot of file read/write errors. It's been a while, so I don't remember exactly what the installer file for PlaneShift is, but guessing a .dmg?

After a successful installation, you will have a folder named PlaneShift, located in either your user Applications folder or your System Applications folder depending on your choice during installation.

Inside this PlaneShift application folder you will find the psclient.app for starting the game, the pslaunch.app for making some configurations to the game, and the file Talad mentioned: "your-admin-name"/PlaneShift/lang/english/stringtable.xml

You will also end up with a game preferences folder installed here: "your-admin-name"/Library/Application Support/Planeshift.
If you do not see the Library folder it is invisible by default. To open it just hold down the option key when selecting the GO menu in Finder, and select Library from the dropdown list.
A good file for troubleshooting here is planeshift.cfg which will be rewritten at startup if removed.

I don't know if you also ran the pslaunch.app to do any updates or set configurations after you installed PlaneShift, but I have seen topics in the MacOS forum here where people said changing the sound preferences fixed crashing. Also, the updater itself is notorious for crashing during updating before it finishes. If that happens, I've also seen a good post about how to continue the update after an updater crash.

I have a question... why are you launching psclient with terminal? Why can't you just double click the psclient.app file to launch the game as with any other app? I don't have any troubles playing on an 2012 iMac with latest Mac OS or any previous OS.

Don't know your budget or if you'd even consider a MacBook, but it's what I use when I want to be out on my patio when not using my iMac and it works very well.

2012, 2.3 GHz 4 core i7, 4 GB ram. You could also natively run Windows 7 or Linux on this too.

Can people who managed it to run confirm the FPS they get?

My iMac averages 58-60 fps in windowed mode and 38-45 fps in full screen mode at 1920x1080 screen resolution.
FPS shows at upper right of screenshots. Very nice and playable even on this older computer and graphics card! (2012 iMac 27, 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7 (quad core), Nvidia GeForce GTX 680MX 2048 MB)

I'm curious with this project to update the game engine, have always used Macs, and so was excited to give this test game a try. I was more interested in exploring to compare the world from the older engine than actually playing the crystal hunt game, but everything worked nearly flawlessly using the default settings. For those interested, I'm currently using a 2012 iMac 27, 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7 (quad core), Nvidia GeForce GTX 680MX 2048 MB, and running OS 10.12.3 Sierra. The one error I encountered was having the game freeze once when pressing the "start" button, requiring using the escape key to quit the game. All other attempts to play had no issues.

I'm looking forward to the day when this will replace the current PS engine!
