Complaint Department / Blue Way Spells and Glyphs
« on: June 10, 2012, 07:03:56 pm »
I'll try to post this with as few spoilers as possible, but to be able to describe the problem adequately, I will need to post some.  Please don't read any further, if you do not wish to see any spoilers.

This is the third time in the chain of Blue Way training that I've needed a glyph for a new realm's spells that is only attainable through the Way Circle Quests at least one realm, up to three realms, out of reach.

It starts with Realm 2, when the glyph you need for any of those spells, isn't available until at least level 40/realm 3.  Frustrating, but at low levels, it trains fast enough even using the lower level spells.

Not too big of a problem, until you realize there aren't any Realm 3 spells, so you have to wait until Realm 4 to be able to efficiently train.  But once you reach Realm 4, you can't get one of the needed glyphs until another half-realm has been trained, and the other glyph needed for the second Realm 4 spell isn't available until Realm 5.  Again, irritating.

If you for some reason decide it's still worthwhile to train Blue Way, once you reach Realm 5, one of the glyphs needed for that realm's ONLY spell, is locked into the Way Circle Master Quest.  Another 50 levels away.

This is not the only magic I train, and I've not seen Crystal, Dark or Red having this many forced stagnations in training.

Levels 1-40: train on a realm 1 spell.
Levels 40-70: train on a realm 2 spell.
Levels 70-130: train on a realm 4 spell.

It's already been addressed that Water was one of the most rare glyphs in game, as a GM glyph, and now it's been added in at a relatively low level actually.  With the new Way Quests, even the rarest glyphs are now attainable, which is great.

I'll be the first to say, Blue Way is not a good way for people who wish to use magic for hunting.  The spells do very low damage, if any, on most profitable mobs, and they have a habit of crashing either the caster, or surrounding players in the cities.  Even people with above-recommended specifications crash routinely around me if I cast in Hydlaa.

However, Blue Way is a great Role-Played magic, and it has a lot of possibilities for the way the characters can utilize it.  For any players who like to back their RP up with actual skills and stats, it's somewhat daunting to see just how slowly the progression is for Blue.  It wouldn't be that big of a deal if all the Ways were like this, but in my experience, at least 3 of the other 5 are much easier and more practical in the way the quests, training, and glyphs are organized.  I hold the same realm for both Crystal and Blue, as my character is trying to become a healer, and what took me a matter of weeks for Crystal is taking me months for Blue.  To me, it seems like you shouldn't have to be realm 7.5 before you can cast the only realm 5 spell, especially when the other Ways don't have the same restrictions.

In an isolated spot, in one of the more desolate depths of the Death Realm, a lone figure sat huddled over.  Her clothes were dirty, scuffed with grime and the mildew that clung to every touchable surface within a days' journey.  A blackish smear, eerily like dried blood spread down her sweater, and flaked over her leathers.  They at least were holding up well.  The frayed edges of a wicked gash through the wool had been crudely tied together, and the belt she wore was tightened over the area, trying to give it some protection from the elements.

Her hair was oily, and drips of the dampness that thickened the air fell from the ends that escaped the braid she kept it back in.  A few strands plastered themselves to her face, little wisps that trailed over the smudges of dirt that had begun to accumulate.  Her face was drawn and worried, expressions playing in a haphazard dance over her golden eyes and tawny skin.

A shudder ran through her frame, and she curled tighter over something that she clutched tightly in her hands.  With dirty fingertips, she brushed the filth from the barely visible surface of a small diamond crystal.  She whispered softly the words that would call up the visions within the gem, but in the gloom of the Realm, she was unable to see more than shadows.  One larger, three smaller.  She sighed softly, raising the crystal and pressing her lips against the hard surface.  After a long moment of silence, she wrapped the crystal carefully in a few scraps of fabric torn from her sweater and tucked it away.

She pulled out a roll of parchment… and began to write.
Day 1:
Damn that menki.  It's never taken me this long to find my way around the Realm before.

I'm not really sure what happened in the transition.  I felt the sword, I felt the ground, but when I would have normally woken up near the bones of some poor unfortunately beast, I saw nothing even remotely recognizable.

Stupid son of an ungrateful trepor… When i get out of here, Kisoji and I are having a very long talk, preferably one that involves axes.

It's very dark here.  Cold and damp.  Something is dripping, but I can't seem to find the source.  There's no water, no rain.  Just cold, dark stones.  Travosh would be proud if he could see how I managed to see enough to write.  I managed to learn just enough Red Way magic when I was topside to make a little glow.   If I sit really still I can almost see the paper.

Not sure why I'm bothering though.  It's just… I can't keep walking.  I walked for a few hours this morning, but didn't see anything.  Just blackened ashes and bones.  There were a few ruins.  One I thought might be a way out.  But it wasn't.

The stones were warm there, and they almost glowed.  There was just an archway left, the rest had crumbled, and the rock pulsed faintly.  But nothing happened when I ran my fingers over it.  No exit lay under it.

I thought for a moment I heard a voice calling my name.  But it never drew closer.  It was probably just a figment of my imagination.  Everything seems hollow here.

I need a few hours rest.  I'll try again tomorrow…

With a sigh, the women rolled the parchment carefully up.  She slipped it into her sweater, and curled herself into a tight ball on the stones.  A large rock formed her pillow, and she pulled once more the diamond crystal out.  She held it tightly, gazing into it's depths as she slowly drifted off into an uneasy sleep.

Single Author Stories / And the training begins...

Hmm... not sure if anyone would want to read this, but if so, here's my take on what really happened when Caraick and Teshia first met.  I've been writing out little bits of their past and well... this happened.

It was not uncommon for the girl to lose her temper.  Cycles under the Dome had probably taught every person with the misfortune to meet her of that.  But what was uncommon was the effect this particular menki seemed to have on the frequency of such a loss.  Currently, she sprawled flat of her back, her axe lying some 20 feet away, and a very smug curve to his lips.  She pushed herself up, brushed the escaping tendrils of hair back from her forehead and scowled.

"Again?"  He asked her in an almost cheeky tone, his tail flicking lazily behind him as he turned the dagger over in his paw.  Caraick looked down at his newest student.  Even the Goddess herself probably couldn't tell why he'd decided to teach her.  He certainly couldn't give a reason as he looked down at the scruffy looking harridan.  His bright blue eyes sparkled as he took in her frustration, and he chuckled softly to himself.  At least she had spirit.

She grumbled, and got stiffly to her feet.  This was only the third… or thirtieth… time she'd been forced to pick herself up tonight.  They'd been practicing for hours, and she'd yet to even come close to disarming him.  Teshia rested her hands on her lower back, and stretched once, her spine popping as it arched and she limped over to retrieve her axe.  She looked down at the battered weapon, a dozen new nicks in the handle from his daggers, and what looked decidedly like a chip out of the recent sharpened blade.  She groaned and crouched to pick it up.

Far closer than she expected, the menki leaned over her shoulder and chuckled softly "Giving up?"  She narrowed her eyes and grumbled, fingertips inching slowly to the handle.  The moment she touched the worn wood, she spun and lashed out with the blade.  It might not have been considered honorable to try and sneak an attack on one's opponent, but frustration and annoyance had left her with few options.  Either way, it did no good, as the menki laughed and rolled backwards out of the range of the weapon.

"I'll take that as a no."  He grinned widely, canines flashing as he crouched and tossed his dagger from one paw to the other.  She inched closer, her grip tight on the axe handle.  "One day, you over-confident hairball…"  He took her insult in stride, whiskers twitching in mild amusement.  "One day, what?  You'll actually manage to hit me?"  She made a choked sound, eyes flashing in anger and lunged forwards, drawing the axe back and slashing it backhandedly towards him.  Caraick snickered softly, parrying the blow easily.  The parry, and her excess effort sent her spinning.  The menki stepped in, tapping her shoulder lightly with the flat of his dagger and tugging on one of the braids she wore in her hair.  She shrieked in indignation and turned back, slicing upwards with her axe in a continual arc, only to have it jarred to a halt by his dagger held in one steady paw.

Honey eyes flashed and glared, meeting the calm gaze of electric blue ones.  She tried to pull her axe free, but he slid his dagger along the length of the handle, hooking it behind the doubled blade and preventing her from moving it.  He spoke calmly, voice deep and steady.  "You waste too much energy.  Focus, and never turn your back."

Teshia nodded, expression grim.  In some respects, she couldn't believe she was letting this man teach her anything.  They had not known each other long, and their first meeting had been anything but pleasant.  Crawling in dark sewers in search of a possessed man and the Nolthrir maiden who'd chased after him; Tesh and her husband at the time, Eelin, had been distracted dispatching a kran who set to protect the man.  They'd barely noticed the inky furred Clamod who slipped down the ladders, but they'd certainly noted the arrows slicing through the air, and the argument that followed between the Nolthrir and the menki.  While not all the words stuck in Teshia's memory, a certain promise to turn that lovely fur into a throw rug was certainly burned in both their memories.

Neither had made any pretense of being fond of the other, yet it was the menki who came to her aid when both her marriage and her guild lay in shambles.  There were few she could claim as friend now, and while she wasn't sure she could put that title to the Clamod before her, she knew there was no malice behind his constant defeats.

She jerked back, wrist twisting to disentangle the weapons.  Her eyes narrowed slightly, and her lips parted, tongue barely flicking out to moisten her lower lip, before the barest of smirks curved the corner up.  The menki watched her with a mix of amusement and that confidence that comes from being able to read an opponent better than they can even their own self.

Trying to play on that confidence, Teshia slowly slipped her second axe from it's loop.  It wasn't usual for her to pull two weapons, namely as neither one of them thought her skilled enough to manage to keep from hurting herself, much less accomplish the defeat of an enemy.  She let the weight of the axe slide it through her grasp, until her fingers tightened around the worn wood, and she spun it once in her hand, testing the balance.  Her right hand was her off hand, but she was learning to overcome that.

With a bit of a feral grin, Teshia stepped forwards, speeding up to close the distance and swung the axe in her left down in a wide arc, slashing down from over the menki's head.  Unfortunately, the heavier weight and lesser skill made it all to easy for Caraick to slide his dagger under the axe and block the swing before it made it to his shoulder.  Rather than be disturbed, Teshia merely grinned wider, spinning suddenly backwards, pivoting around to bring the axe in her right hand around in a backhanded slash.

There was a bit of a twinkle in Caraick's electric blue eyes, and one brow arched slightly.  It wasn't a bad maneuver, in fact, on another opponent who wasn't expecting her desperation, it might've even worked.  He smiled, almost proudly as he stepped flush against the Ylian's back, too close to her for the blades of the axe to reach him, and certainly in a perfect position to slide his foot against the back of hers.  One small push, and the already overbalanced girl landed flat on her back with a gasp and cough.

A split second later, and the menki knelt atop her, knees pinning her to the ground, dagger blade held loosely at her neck.  She groaned, letting the axes fall to the ground, and rubbed gingerly at the back of her head.

"Ow…"  She looked away, paying the dagger no mind and blinking back the first traces of frustration that threatened to well in her eyes.

Caraick frowned slightly.  In a flash, the dagger was safely sheathed, and he reached out to rub his paw gently over the beginnings of a bump.  She looked away still further, expression almost comical as she tried not to cry.  It was one thing to lose, another thing entirely to show weakness to one's teacher.  It simply wasn't done.  "M'fine… "  She muttered, her full lower lip beginning to poke out just a bit in a pout.

He chuckled, ruffling her braids a bit, letting his paw slide away until he caught the end of one braid in his fingertips and tugged it gently.  "It was a good move.  Creative, and using multiple attacks is always good.  Next time… just remember to tuck your chin when you fall."

She glowered a bit, her frustration flaring into anger, and she swatted at his paw.  "You don't have to rub it in."  Current positioning declared well enough to both of them who the better fighter was, but Teshia always was a master at misreading people's intentions.  He rolled his eyes and rocked back a bit to look down at her.  "I'm not.  Your learning quickly, and you improvise.  Also a very good thing.  Just be patient.  Use your head, then your axes."

She nodded, petulance lingering in her gaze.  The menki stayed sitting on her belly, forcing her to turn her face to meet his gaze.  When she did, he smiled faintly; not his usual mocking one, but not so soft as to be taken as pity.  She started to reply to him, but the words seemed to hide from her, and she merely lay beneath him, lips parted, gaze locked on his.

He looked at her, a faintly curious tilt to his head, and whatever thoughts passed through his mind, they remained carefully hidden from the Ylian.  Something passed over her face, a shadow of sorts, where she realized in that moment, that she very much so respected this man.  A niggling whisper in the back of her mind questioned whether "respect" was the correct word to be used, but she quickly smothered it.  He was her teacher, he was honorable, and engaged… and she was newly divorced.  Surely it was respect and only respect that responded on even the most primitive level at having this menki prove his ability and strength time and again.

He waved his paw in front of her face "You still with me, Tesh?"

That brought her back to her senses, and she swatted at his paw, trying to cover anything he might've noticed in her pausing.  "Just thinking of how you'd look flat on your back, menki."

He smirked.  "Keep practicing, and maybe one day you'll find out."  He pushed back and up to his feet, holding out a paw to help her up.  Her fingertips fairly burned as they rested against his, and she slowly raised her gaze to his.  This… would be interesting.

General Discussion / Guild Leadership
« on: March 18, 2011, 12:31:22 am »
Ok, so this is something I've been thinking about.  I really hope I put this in the right sub-forum too.  :sweatdrop:

What do you think makes a good guild leader?  I don't mean people, and I am by no means looking for people to name names, or insult anyone.  But I am curious what traits do players like to see in "leaders" both ICly and OOCly.

Guilds Forum / [GUILD] The Adani Order

The Adani Order

General:

The Adani Order is a council-led guild that is dedicated to the defense of peace, and the respect of all life, in any form. The Adani Order serves the people of Yliakum, for the good of Yliakum, using their abilities and strengths to serve as the guardians within the Dome. Adani serve others, rather than rule over them, for the good of the people as a whole, and for the necessary continuation of peace and justice. Adani are teachers, protectors, negotiators, servants, and defenders, no member of the Order ever uses their powers for their own gain, or to harm an innocent being. The Adani welcome anyone who wishes to join their ranks, all that is required to join is a desire to learn, and to be instructed in the teachings of the Order.

History:

As long as Yliakum has been ruled by the Octarchy, the Adani Order has co-existed alongside the people of Yliakum, as much a part of the people as they are separate, excluded from normal life by their heightened abilities and grave responsibilities. The first Master of the Order, Solran Adani, was a master fighter, skilled with all manners of weapons. After a life of fighting and adventuring all across Yliakum, Solran discovered the need for guardians against the constant advancement of evil and injustice across the land. Working in conjuction with the young Octarchy, Solran started a school for his like-minded followers, named the Adani Order. Solran and his friends sought to instruct his followers in the art of combat, and negotiation. Adani strove to show his pupils the need for defenders of peace and justice in Yliakum, and trained them to serve as these guardians. As the first Apprentices in the Order advanced in age and experience, their power and influence in the world around them became clear, and Solran saw the need to establish the Order as a permanent part of the land of Yliakum. Before he died, Adani stepped down as Master of the Order, and passed on his sword to his successor. The Order continued to serve as the guarding force against evil and corruption throughout the ages, surviving and continuing to the present day, where Solran's sabre continues to be wielded by the current Master of the Order. The ancient teachings of the Adani continue to be passed on to their Apprentices, and the Adani still serve as trusted and honorable guardians of light and justice in Yliakum.

The teachings of the Order are eternal and universal.  Many of the current Order members have turned to this path, after experiencing firsthand the pain and suffering caused by injustice and cruelty, as both victims and oppressors.  The ever-present principle of respect to all, as well as the goals of striving to protect those near and precious are the basis of the reformations that strength and guide the Order members.

Organization:

The Order is organized by the ancient concept of master and apprentice, and the guild is divided into two main paths: that of the fighter, and that of the negotiator. The Adani Order is overseen by the Adani Council, and the Council is led by the Master of the Order. The Master of the Order is, in nearly all respects, simply another member of the Adani Council, he or she has no additional powers other than the task of organizing and directing the Adani Council, which is the ruling authority of the guild. The Adani Council approves petitions for apprenticeship, administrates over any guild disputes, and votes on any major guild decisions.  All new members begin at the Initiate ranking, where they are given a more hands-on experience into what their time in the Adani Order will be like. If deemed a good fit for the guild, an individual at the Initiate Rank will then be promoted into the true ranks of the Adani Order, beginning with the rank of Mantharor. Enkien for learner, Mantharors receive basic training and instruction at the hands of the senior members in the Order. At the Mantharor rank, members begin to choose which path that they will follow in the Order, and once that path is chosen, a senior member, either Ambassador or Master, or rarely, a Knight or Journeyman, will take that Mantharor as their personal Apprentice. The Apprentice begins the long path of training and fighting alongside their Master. Once an Apprentice is deemed worthy of advancing by their Master, then the Master will present his or her Apprentice to the Adani Council.  The Order recognizes that not all individuals are suited for combat, nor are all capable of delicate negotiations.  Therefore, there are two main paths established, that of the Knight, a fighters's calling, and that of the Ambassador, the diplomatic corps.  At the time of presentation to the Council, the Master and Apprentice will choose the appropriate path to be followed.  The path of the negotiator is culminated in the rank of Adani Ambassador, and that of the fighter leads to the rank of Adani Master. Adani Ambassadors have the task of representing the Adani Council to the people, Octarchy, and to other guilds that they may be negotiating with. Adani Masters are tasked with being the main teachers in the guild, and the training of Mantharors, as well as defense of the Order, is their responsibility. All members of the Order are taught to respect each other, and to love one another, as indeed they love and care for themselves.

Guild Ranks:
Master of the Order
Adani Council
Adani Master
Adani Ambassador
Adani Knight
Adani Journeyman
Adani Apprentice

Fan Art / Tessra's Art Thread
« on: September 03, 2010, 05:46:44 am »
Mk... So I couldn't sleep and decided to try and sketch at least one of my girls.  And since Tesh usually has a rather difficult to draw smirk on her face, I went with Tess instead. Yep, I know.. identical twins should look... well... identical... but one of them is more identical than the other!!

If you noticed the lack o' horns... that would be cause they are actually Ylian, and not Ynwnn.  This is how I see Tessra in my head, looking a bit unsure of herself, and rather shyly looking around.  [And I did use a reference for part of the position, just to be sure I got the arms in the right orientation.] Oh yeah... and I can't draw feet... so you can just pretend they are there.   :whistling:
* Tessra slinks off into the darkness to figure out how to draw axes next.
