Wish list / Harvesting Ideas
« on: February 22, 2023, 03:58:00 am »
Forageable Areas:
These areas are visually represented by a non-interactable model of wild plants spanning several meters in diameter. "Nodes" placed on this asset spawn interactable plants that can be harvested. These foraging areas are placed in certain locations which receive optimal angle of light, type of soil, proximity to water, etc. They cannot be removed by players. They could impede a player's movement (like real brush).
Quality of harvestable plants could first be determined by quality inherent to the area or randomly upon spawning plants at a node.

Harvestable Nodes:
Nodes are located on forage areas. Harvest nodes spawn a model of a full plant that is interactable and can be harvested. The spawned plants cannot be picked up and put into inventory like traditional items.
As a method of reducing objects in the scene, the plant could be spawned with a value indicating the maximum number of times it can be harvested before disappearing. Each time there is a successful harvest attempt, the number decreases by one. When the value reaches 0, the plant disappears.
For players to enjoy searching for plants they have picked many times, a randomized timer could determine when plants respawn. Alternatively, nodes could randomly spawn plants, and a forage area could have a maximum number of spawned plants at a given time.

Determining Quality:
When plants are spawned, they are automatically given a numerical quality. An expert should be able to see this upon inspection.
(Does quality represent potency? Durability? Both?)
Upon harvesting a plant, a player's skill can decrease the quality of plant parts. Difficulty of harvesting a particular plant increases the chance of decreasing quality when a player harvests. An expert will not decrease the quality of plant parts when harvesting.
This means there are two chances for quality to decrease.

Harvesting:
Players want harvesting to be more involved than going to the same placed item every time, but they don't want it to be so involved that it becomes a mini-game.
The player should be able to visually recognize a forageable area. The player could move around the area to find a plant. The player will need to be near to or selecting the desired plant. A command/button could begin a timed harvesting process. (Realistically, it takes time to forage without damaging the plant or yourself and to acquire enough materials.)
The harvesting action takes longer at lower levels. This represents the process of real foraging, which can be tedious, and the goal should be to acquire a quantity, not a single piece of a plant.
Harvesting yields a higher quantity of plant parts at a higher level. Lower yield at lower levels represents being unable to find parts or accidentally destroying them in the process of acquiring them.
Using the incorrect tool will yield very poor quality plant parts or make attempts unsuccessful.

Identification:
Players can inspect to identify a plant or plant part. Attributes are shown to the player based on their skill.
Attributes for plants: name, quality, uses (food, medicinal, poison, etc.)
Attributes for plant parts: name, quality, uses, effects (if consumed)

New containers:
Sacks are not quite large enough for harvesting nor realistic for carrying foraged materials. Plant parts could automatically be placed into these containers.
Foraging bag - An over-the-shoulder bag which hangs near the hip (closer to the back for animation purposes). It should be worn in a slot.
Basket - It's a woven basket. It should be carried.

(This is an organized summary of ideas discussed in Discord.)

In-Game Roleplay Events / Sarras's 30th Birthday Party
« on: January 11, 2022, 11:25:00 pm »
I am pleased to inform everyone that Sarras's birthday will be held this year. But unlike the other birthdays, she'll truly be considered an adult! According to Dermorians, the 30th year cycle is their first year cycle of actual adulthood. And that's why she's been such a twerp for so long.

This isn't written anywhere, by the way. Sarras is so well-known, you just know this information. But you don't know which day is her birthday because I forgot.

General Discussion / IC reason for why Hydlaa is so empty
« on: January 17, 2019, 07:02:00 pm »
Ulbernauts ate everyone.

That's a semi-joke. Actual reason: enough people were attacked by ulbernauts that most who were capable of leaving the city fled.

What do you think?

The Hydlaa Plaza / Who will play UE PS?
« on: October 01, 2018, 02:45:48 am »
I am now closer to 30 than 20 and wasn't able to play this game much in the last couple years of people actually playing it. I miss when this game was populated. The Unreal version will probably bring in players. So I'm curious who is likely to return if to play or check it out.

And what improvements would you most like to see? Personally, I'd like skills and stats to be more roleplay focused so there could be an integrated dice system.

edit:

Thank you all who contributed to the thread. Hope to see you in-game!

General Discussion / RP Not Required?
« on: September 07, 2017, 06:57:45 pm »
I've been noticing a trend of players using smiley faces and chatspeak ("lol", "btw", OOC abbreviations, etc.) in main. I've noticed another of guilds forming without roleplay, the players not understanding the difference between IC and OOC or what roleplay even is. Then I see those guilds invite every new player they can catch into their guilds. And because these guilds rarely roleplay, and what roleplay they do have doesn't differentiate between IC and OOC, these new players don't encounter much roleplay at all and more often than not quit playing. And then there are the blatantly OOC guilds that shouldn't exist at all--e.g., Captainsriffcrew (yes, that is the name).

When I was a new player, you could be kicked/banned for posting too many bracketed OOC lines in main. Now, it seems like OOC players who don't want to roleplay are taking over the game and pushing away many new players who would otherwise stick around. It's like the GMs are not performing their duties to ensure the server remains RP-only. Not to knock them, but this is getting really out of hand. I haven't seen any players being warned/kicked for refusing to be IC in main. And there are a lot who behave OOCly.

It honestly seems like roleplay isn't required anymore. And that is, from what I can see, terrible for this game. This might actually explain why the number of players online has dropped significantly since the EZPC server was merged into the Laanx server.

So, if roleplay is required, why is it not being enforced?

Complaint Department / The % next to ping in server status
« on: August 24, 2017, 09:08:00 pm »
Why is there a % sign in the server ping on the login screen of the game?

It's been like this for as far as I can remember, but no one's ever commented on it. I'd like to know why it sometimes displays as a percentage when it's obviously not a percentage.

General Discussion / RIP my desktop's logs from 2016-2017
« on: July 11, 2017, 06:21:28 pm »
My Planeshift folder in Appdata failed to transfer to my external harddrive while migrating to an SSD. I formatted the harddrive they were left on. It's all gone. About ten whole hours of roleplaying! Now, if I'm suddenly struck with amnesia I'll have no idea who my characters are.

I'm sloppy.

General Discussion / Death
« on: May 16, 2017, 03:21:12 pm »
If there is anyone whom I've ever played with and you see this, please post.

There's no legitimate roleplay occurring anymore.

Where has everyone gone? Why has everyone gone?

Why does it look like it just got stolen? What's going on?

I had just logged on today in the arena. Not five seconds later, I'm kicked from the game. For cheating, somehow. "Paladin has kicked you from the game for cheating." Log back in, I'm in the tutorial. Try to /tell paladin, but no such player exists. No GM gives me an answer.

What the hell was that? And how could I be cheating if I was only in the arena to roleplay last night?

General Discussion / Plans to change stat leveling?
« on: April 01, 2016, 04:58:05 pm »
Was just discussing this in gossip, so I wondered if the developers were considering this as well.

The way leveling stats in this game works is by speaking to a trainer and trading practice points and money for higher levels. However, raising skills requires no visits to trainers. If striving for realism, these methods of leveling clash and don't make much sense.

In my opinion, it would be more realistic to have players level stats without trainer visits and level skills by visiting a trainer every 10-20 levels or so.

The other issue, which a lot of noobs face, is that stat trainers are difficult to find. You'd think that they would advertise their profession, given they take money to give players levels. Once again, advertising, "I'll help you build agility," doesn't make much sense, so switching the methods of leveling for skills and stats would make more sense here. Imagine seeing a poster that says, "Looking for a sword trainer? ___ will teach you in the Arena!"

The real purpose for this post is to know whether the developers plan to change this inconsistency, but I invite discussion from regular players. I really want to see this change, possibly to something better than what I suggested above.

In-Game Roleplay Events / Ring of Daggers [reboot]
« on: March 24, 2016, 07:26:47 pm »
First match has ended.

Welcome to the Ring of Daggers, a recurring event to be held in the Arena. Duels between two challengers are fought inside a circle of daggers placed in the sand. Gambling is allowed. This is a roleplay focused event, and as such, all matches are roleplayed. Friendly matches, grudge matches, and death matches are accepted.

Note: This is not an IC poster. This is explicitly for player knowledge. This may be used for reference once your character is familiar with the Ring of Daggers.

This event is to be held based on popular demand and availability of the ringmaster. Please discuss in this thread at what time and date you believe this event should be held!

Matches

Entrants must inform the Ringmaster. They can opt to enter a pool from which the Ringmaster will pick matches or can meet among themselves and choose. Terms of the fight must be stated beforehand. Observers may come and go as they please. Bettors must place bets before matches and be present to collect their winnings.
Currently, only one-on-one matches are allowed. Fighters must either both be unarmed or both be armed. They must agree to each other's choice of weapon before a match begins. No ranged weapons are permitted. Leather armor and chainmail armor are allowed, but plate of any kind is prohibited.
During matches, no magic in any form is allowed. This is including but not limited to spells, buffs, curses, and enchantments. If a fighter is suspected of bearing any active magic, that fighter may be ejected.
Deathmatches are allowed, but must be agreed to beforehand by both fighters and the Ringmaster. The Ringmaster may choose to bar entrants from participating in deathmatches. Intentionally stepping out of the ring will result in death.
Matches begin at the word of the Ringmaster. Fighters must be standing inside of the ring and outside the reach of each other's weapons. The Ringmaster may decide to end the match at any time. The victors of ordinary matches are determined by submission. Deathmatches are won by the last living fighter.

General Rules

Intervening in an ongoing match without permission is prohibited.
Magic may only be used by or on contestants after a match has ended.
A fighter attempting to kill an opponent in a non-deathmatch will be punished.
Fighters suspected of predetermining matches will be punished.
Deathmatches must end with at least one fighter dead.

Rules of Combat

    No biting.
    No eye-gouging.
    No harming of genitals.
    No finger twisting.
    No fleeing.

OOC Rules

    Follow A-B-A-B turn order.
Players are permitted three minutes maximum to post. If you fail to post in that amount of time, the opposing player is allowed to post.
Godmoding is strictly prohibited, and you will be ejected or ignored based on severity.
    Do not OOCly predetermine fights.

Fighting Etiquette

Two players should participate per match. Please do not fight your alt.
If you have an emergency and must leave or go AFK, OOCly state so to avoid your turn being skipped. If the time of absence stretches on too long, the ringmaster may decide to end the match.
Try to be realistic during fights. Injuries should diminish a character's performance. Consider if your attack is physically possible. Keep in mind that your character does not have infinited endurance.
Be specific when performing an attack, and do everything you can to avoid confusion for the opposing player.
Your character should not be fighting for more than one real hour. The ringmaster reserves the right to end a match if it stretches for so long other players are no longer enjoying the event.
If you are unsure of your ability to roleplay combat and want to fight, watch matches before entering.

Gambling

Bookmaker is currently an open position. If you want to be the one to take bets, please /tell Junius or approach him during the event.

Risks

Before entering, your character must accept that his or her actions may be met in kind. Rulebreaking, depending on severity, will result in ejection or punishment. Cheating will be met with humiliation. Attempting to kill a participant who has not consented to death will result in execution. Disobeying the terms set by a deathmatch will result in execution.

I'm curious if PS will see any improvements in the art department with the switch to UE4. The textures as of now look like soup. Will we use 1024x textures? Will the poly count of meshes be upped? The maximum count for character models is 2k polygons according to the wiki, which is fair, but in game models do not reflect that.

Last question: is there a repository of reference textures and styles? Do players have access?
