Unreal Engine is the only solution, we know it, I know it. Will it happen? Possible.
I feel that if this is not done as soon as possible, the game will [...] have no chance of recovery.
I guess once the transition to UE4 is done, a bunch of folks will return for nostalgia and curiosity. Even if that engine is outdated by then  :D

The decline of the player base does not seem like something to be urgently resolved, rather, it has somewhat already happened. So, thumbs up for the volunteers who have been and still are working hard to make that engine transition possible.

Hey Sarko, that's cool of you and your GM mates to host another tournament of this kind. In my opinion, the best thing about the past edition is how players enjoyed to prepare for and execute the games. Life in Hydlaa... that was great. That being said, I've been very busy with work these days, but who knows, maybe I'll find a moment to watch a few rounds or even fill up a vacancy. We'll see about that. All the best wishes for this event to everyone!

While I guess the actual code base is not the best sandbox for getting started, I remember there was lot of documentation material floating around. E.g. descriptions for GSoC projects and the engine documentation stuff on the PS wiki. I also remember some nice slides about the design of the game and networking, but I have no clue where you can find that right now.

Interesting topic. I think PS is very much different from the usual multiplayer RPGs out there, and that's perfectly fine. Okay, that's sort of a niche, but I think it's much more likeable than trying to copy other titles. A big part of what defines PS is the CS engine, which indeed has its quirks, so, sooner or later, it will be cool to see what will happen with the port to UE4. I think this will have huge potential, to keep the stuff that makes PS unique, and fuse that with a modern, shiny engine.

Yes, it's a pity that the player numbers are so low these days. If you want to check before launching the client, you can look at the official stats page, http://planeshift.teamix.org/index.php?page=char_stats, or on similar pages, like http://greatshift.111mb.de/who. Usually, there are more players around in GMT evening hours.

Maybe you wanted to post this elsewhere? The caps on character stats have indeed changed a lot since 2009... but don't worry too much about getting out of the death realm. I hope you remember the path to the portal, which you should be able to follow without getting attacked by any of the creatures there. Usually, "weaker" characters are not thrown into the DR, since you only spawn there after having played a certain number of hours.

Depends on which mods you would like to use. It's all documented on the greatshift site, as linked in Neeno's and my signature.

- PSExtended is a big client mod with lots of extras, you'll find installers for win and mac, and tarballs for linux and mac

- BoNeeSkin (without PSExtended) are just a gui textures, and can be used like any other skin, i.e. put the zip in ~PlaneshiftInstall/art/skins and select it via the launcher.

- BoNeeMaterials are custom textures and best used with the mod loader, which is included in PSextended.

The settings may define similar anatomy, but do you really think female klyros like the same style of fashion? I doubt any klyrf would like to see that "no armor" texture  on her ;D

In that sense, I agree this is a long standing issue, and some texture work, along with a little engine tweak could fix this. A few years ago, a second skin tone was added, and the work in progress for adding all the robes seems like a bigger challenge than this.

Shyndora, I think once new options for character appearance are available, I'm sure you will get a chance to have your existing characters updated. It may take some GM assistance, for instance during a small event, but it has definitely happened in the past.

Simplest thing i can think of: Double the rates of all animal parts in the loot table and reduce the base prices and weights by half. I don't know the current rates, but I guess they are below 50% each, and the chance to get nothing at all should decrease quite a bit. Though, nowadays many things can actually be used for crafting, so maybe you'd have to double the amounts in these steps, too. That's how simple things can get complicated again >_<

I think group PvE does not have to break immersion. Maybe there will be some nice challenges in context of future arena developments? I know quests are a single-player thing right now, but maybe some quest mechanics could be used for a group fight against some top tier gladiators. A fight does not always have to end with death, and even if it does, there's a chance to return from the death realm.

I think forum accounts are independent, and player characters must have unique first names. That's because some commands (chat, grouping, moderation) use only the first name to define the target.

Maybe some admin could look up for how many years the already registered"Ariel" character has been inactive.

Probably the easiest solution will be to try a different way to spell your name, though, it is well possible that quite a few of these variations will be taken already as well.

When you copy over config files, such as shortcuts and binds, have a look at the README.txt. Some files are in slightly different subfolders. (That's because greatshift supported separate files per character before the official client did, and still uses its own conventions for this.)
