In-Game Roleplay Events / Re: Player event: Lost in Yliakum
« on: December 02, 2023, 05:09:20 am »
Fellow adventurers!

There is quite the opportunity for a sequel to this. Yet not today. I won't be online. And it would benefit greatly from GM support. It would really be better to do the sequel once a GM is around.

But in case you like to help a young woman to find her parents, I am sure we can do a sequel to that once either Uadjet has a working PC again or another GM likes to step in.

I might post a summary of what happened in the first installment of this story at another time. So that those who did not have the opportunity to attend can learn about it.

Anyway, I suggest you just go online on Saturday at usual event time anyway. I likely will be online the next Saturday again. I am sure someone can come up with something and if not, you can still explore some area or whatever. I hope, Uadjet, you have new powerful PC soon! One that can run 10 clients at the same time or more.  ;D

General Discussion / Re: The Observatory and the Applied Knowledge Faction
« on: November 25, 2023, 10:27:06 am »
Damola might ask about the purpose of the observatory. Watching the crystal might blind the watcher. Watching the stars... well from inside basically a cave not really practical. Spying on your neighbors?

So what... after all the effort that Talad put into the observatory, especially finding the one superb blue, the only and only blue that can be, the amazing blue, the awesome blue, that one blue one can only hope to find... is actually being observed with the telescope of the Observatory? It points into the sky, but we are inside a cave. Are we researching about the structure of the roof top of the cave?

I am sure there can be an amazing lore about it, but it needs some creativity to address above questions!

That new observatory is truly awesome. Now what happens once you let your imagination go wild about the lore connected to it? Also... an idea of an observatory has been in game lore before? My guess would be like so. What does existing lore tell?

General Discussion / Re: Frustrating Start
« on: November 25, 2023, 10:21:52 am »
Dear Wiff77,

I hear you. And yes, it has been discussed. Both in the forum and in the bug tracker. I hope there will be improvements regarding new player experience.

But as you made it through, be invited to Saturday's events. Currently our GM is in the process to obtain a new computer, but we still have some player event going.

Also feel free to ask for help in game. I hope at least sometimes some other players are around. Saturday's and Sunday's evening, European time, there are usually some people around.

And finally I found out why I could not post some posts and it gave a database error.

In-Game Roleplay Events / Player event: Lost in Yliakum
« on: November 25, 2023, 10:06:25 am »
Hi fellow adventurers!

The summoning glyph is still in the process to summon our beloved GM's Uadjet's new mightily powerful PSUnreal client running machine. (For what else would you use a computer anyway  ;D)

But fear not, adventures can still be had!

Already last week we had a nice player event: Daevaorn's Yliakum Quiz: https://www.hydlaaplaza.com/PlaneShift/smf/index.php?topic=43722.0

And this evening, usual time, there is another little player event: Lost In Yliakum.

It has been heard that it might start at the Stonehead Tavern in Gugrontid...

Best of luck and success for you, Uadjet, to obtain your new QC[1]. Looking forward for exploring new realms and mastering new challenges in new adventures as soon as you are back!

In-Game Roleplay Events / Player event: Daevaorn's Yliakum Quiz
« on: November 25, 2023, 09:57:03 am »
Hello fellow travellers!

As the mighty number cruncher of Uadjet broke down and is in dire need for suitable replacement last week we had a nice player event. Daevaorn did a nice question and answer game for us and wonderful prices: "Daevorn's Yliakum Quiz":

An interesting twist to the game was, that in case one gave a wrong answer the opponent got a point:

Thanks, Daevaorn!

Linux Specific Issues / Re: SegFault on Opensuse tumbleweed
« on: September 10, 2023, 02:30:30 pm »
Still running just fine on Devuan Ceres with Plasma Desktop on integrated graphics of AMD Ryzen 7 Pro 4750U. Devuan Ceres follows Debian Sid aka Unstable. But openSUSE Tumbleweed might still be more current at least in some areas.

Newbie Help (Start Here) / Re: How to help Newbies. Some thoughts and ideas.
« on: September 08, 2023, 05:40:42 am »
Greetings Gonger, greetings everyone.

I thought about this for a while after the discussion in last dev Q&A.

I also chose to come online several times in the evenings, CEST time zone, for several hours and typed "/who" command frequently. However I did not find any new player online during that times. Of course this not representative in any way, however I am not sure whether we loose as many newbies at the moment as you fear. Of course loosing just one new player or a few new players is bad given the current state of affairs. During these challenging times however I find it difficult to be online every evening just to see whether a new player logs in. I find myself needing a lot of time to recover from the sheer insanity happening in our world today. I believe this is headed into a good direction considering all what is happening and the meaning behind it, but at times this is not easy to see.

Some ideas I had about helping new players along:

1) Hint newbies at the GM events on Saturday in a prominent place and also to the market on Sundays. Cause there are at least some long time players online during that time. I am sure Uadjet would be fine for us all taking some time to help a new player along during the event. For me the GM events are rewarding experiences of game play and role play within the game. My hope would be that this could be similar for new players. Also it is a great opportunity for chars and players to make friendship with one another and maybe make an appointment for playing together during the week.

2) Maybe additionally it would be an option to agree on a time for newbies each week. A time were long time players can agree on aiming to be online each week. Maybe an hour before the event or an hour before the market. Or between market and dev q&a - that would be nice, cause at the market things tend to be quite quiet anyway these times and there is plenty of opportunity to help a new player along. And of course Gova has everything in store a new player could ever want and if not Damola can help along. ;D - Damola looking at her immense collection of glyphs and all the other stuff she collected. - At least those are times I could make often enough. Thing is, I cannot afford to look out for new players 24/7, I simply cannot and do not want to afford this, but during certain times, that would be doable for me.

3) Make it possible for chars of long time players to enter the tutorial area to directly help there. This could be locked by a quest that can only be accessed after a reasonable amount of other quests completed or a reasonable amount of time in the game or a combination there of. I really would like that. Not telling a new player everything straight away and thus spoil the fun, but maybe Damola could give a hint in the labyrinth or the tutorial every now and then. I can do a wish report about this if not already done.

4) I wondered whether to make Dryken plane, Labyrinth and tutorial area easier than they are now. However I also see the value of some effort to be made to enter the game as a new player. Why? What PlaneShift needs are players who engage on a regular base for a longer time. If someone is not willing to make some effort, then that someone may not be genuinely interested in playing the game anyway. Of course this is a difficult balance. Even someone who would be genuinely interested could loose motivation in case they face a frustrating obstacle during early game play. I played through the tutorial once with a new char and it was pretty much straight forward for me. Except for me not understanding that the new char did not yet do everything required to talk to the last NPC in there in order to leave the tutorial area. My issue was that the last NPC did not say anything at all before the quest requirements were met. Also part of the issue was that I did not get how to enter the second tower with the mage in the basement initially. I was running around with the new char back and forth until I eventually recognized what part was still missing and how to arrive the place to complete it. I'd prefer that NPC giving a hint on what is still missing. But aside from that I found the labyrinth and tutorial area reasonable enough. I may open a bug report about last NPC giving a hint, but I forgot the name of that confident Klyros NPC already.

Does any of these ideas make sense to you? What other ideas do you have?

In-Game Roleplay Events / Re: Event Starting Times, take 2
« on: June 10, 2023, 06:16:30 am »
Thanks for the vote.

I understand "The time events traditionally started" as 19:00 UTC - or for example 21:00 CEST, Central European Summer Time - which would also be the time the last event started and the event today starts. I vote for keeping this time and thus voted for this option.

I'd prefer exact times as options except of names that need to be interpreted even with time zones being difficult.  :)

Please allow for some time for Talad to make user accessible web stuff like MyPlane accessible again. There is already a new subdomain for that and it also has valid TLS certificate, however the PHP scripts need to be adapted to new PHP version and to PSUnreal of course.

The old planeshift.teamix.org is gone for good.

Tech savvy people can find out the new domain already but I will skip announcing it here. Talad can announce it once there is something available for you to see :)

It is done. The old server is gone and the new one is running at the IP address of the old one.

Please use PSUnreal 0.7.35 or later as it contains the right server list. The new client can be downloaded already from https://www.planeshift.it/Download

So it is indeed time to see goodbye to Crystalspace based PlaneShift.

However it will live on in our memories. All the adventures all the stories!

But what new places are there for us to explore in the much more vast Yliakum in Unreal based PlaneShift? What new stories are to be told? The possibilities are endless!

I hope to see you in PSUnreal. And to those players who cannot play it on their current hardware: Go get some new(er) gear! In case you cannot afford it, I am sure there would be a way for us as a community to support you.

Yes, indeed, I will shutdown the Crystalspace based PlaneShift server this weekend.

To allow for one more last event and one more last market, I will do it either late Sunday or early Monday.

So you will have (almost) a complete weekend to record a memorial video, visit places you remember fondly of and:

Come on, let us say goodbye together, attend to the event, attend to one last market!

It had to be done at some time. Also I look forward to care for just one instead of two PlaneShift servers, operating system wise.

I will miss Crystalspace based PlaneShift as well, however I also look forward to create new memories in PSUnreal. Very much so! I still hope performance of the client will increase again after it dropped by switching to Unreal 5, but I greatly enjoy the vastness of Yliakum in PSUnreal and the much better graphics. What new places are waiting for us to explore them? What new secrets are hidden in new and old dungeons? What stories are still to be told? Possibilities are endless!

PSUnreal is not free of bugs and not free of new bugs that weren't in Crystalspace based PS. However it has gone a long way and I really enjoy the events of our GM Uadjet there.

Thank you very much to Talad and all of the other developers and testers of PlaneShift Unreal. It is an almost insanely immense effort that went into PSUnreal, especially from Talad!

I do look forward to also see all of those players who do not yet have the hardware to play PSUnreal. Come on, get yourself some new or new used gear and be sure that we, who already play on PSUnreal, will welcome you again! And if someone really cannot afford a new machine, I am sure we can find a solution.

If you run PSUnreal inside a terminal emulator with scrollbar, you should be able to scroll up to read the text.

Do you have Vulkan driver support installed? In Debian/Devuan/Ubuntu its supposed to be in the package mesa-vulkan-drivers. Also Intel Xe graphics is quite new. Maybe Ubuntu 22.04 is too old? In package vulkan-tools is a command named vulkaninfo.

Under Layers this command should display the found graphics drivers. There should be at least one layer which relates to your graphics chip (Intel Xe graphics). I for example have something like:

Code: [Select]
Layers: count = 3
=================
VK_LAYER_INTEL_nullhw (INTEL NULL HW) Vulkan version 1.1.73, layer version 1:
        Layer Extensions: count = 0
        Devices: count = 2
GPU id = 0 (AMD Radeon Graphics (RADV RENOIR))
                Layer-Device Extensions: count = 0

                GPU id = 1 (llvmpipe (LLVM 15.0.6, 256 bits))
                Layer-Device Extensions: count = 0

VK_LAYER_MESA_device_select (Linux device selection layer) Vulkan version 1.3.211, layer version 1:
        Layer Extensions: count = 0
        Devices: count = 2
GPU id = 0 (AMD Radeon Graphics (RADV RENOIR))
                Layer-Device Extensions: count = 0

                GPU id = 1 (llvmpipe (LLVM 15.0.6, 256 bits))
                Layer-Device Extensions: count = 0

VK_LAYER_MESA_overlay (Mesa Overlay layer) Vulkan version 1.3.211, layer version 1:
        Layer Extensions: count = 0
        Devices: count = 2
GPU id = 0 (AMD Radeon Graphics (RADV RENOIR))
                Layer-Device Extensions: count = 0

                GPU id = 1 (llvmpipe (LLVM 15.0.6, 256 bits))
                Layer-Device Extensions: count = 0

Unfortunately even with 0.7.33 its about 15 to 20 fps on my laptop. Unreal 4 based PS was considerably faster.
