[I missed the first few minutes, but Uadjet told me that he had just reminded people about the Enki jewelry before starting to talk about the Klyros jewelry.

Resildren:  i saw it on the stream
Resildren:  looks great
Gova:  Ooh! I can be even more pretentious!
Uadjet:  The Klyros jewelry is not yet available via character creation or admin command, but likely won't take too long to complete.
Uadjet:  I'm not sure what he's going to work on next, but if he asks I'll suggest Stonehammer beards and battle tokens.
Uadjet:  I just checked, and I think it's 3 types of tiara for Klyros.
Gova:  I'm glad it isn't piercings.
Resildren grins
Anysu:  Jewlery question
Gova:  Piercing fins... it just sounds like piercing the webbing between your fingers.
Gova:  And I think fish use fins to detect water movement, so they're likely even more sensitive.
Uadjet:  Yes?
Anysu:  Will the new jewlery be able to be removed like rings and necklaces now?
Uadjet:  Well, right nown it's only removable via admin command.
Anysu:  Do you know if that will change. So one can switch out new jewlery?
Uadjet:  In the future it may be something equippable, as that is Talad's plan, but that would require adding equipment slots, changing the gui, plus the work in making them items in game.
Uadjet:  We could, I suppose, simply add another slot to the bottom row, and call it... something. Cosmetic jewelry?
Resildren:  nice glad i trained up so high in jewelery making
Anysu:  Lastly, maybe asked before, will we be able to craft the new jewelry?
Uadjet:  That is part of the plan, yes.
Anysu:  thank you
Uadjet:  Actually, it'll be easier than I thought. I still think in terms of the old crafting system.
Uadjet:  Now you could just select which item you were wanting to make and click on that, instead of each item needing a unique combination of resources.
Uadjet:  Yes, Lytoza?
Lytoza:  Hi. Is there any plans to increase the number of shortcuts?
Uadjet:  Not that I know of, but that is a common request. At least now each character can have their own set of shortcuts.
Lytoza:  Yes, which is nice. I do miss the ability to name a shortcut and add a personal description for RP reasons.
Lytoza:  ...or using proper greetings for races. No need to remember them. >.>
Uadjet:  True. There is a wildcard used in quests ($race) that does something similar. I wonder...
Uadjet:  Resildren?
Resildren:  a continued question on shortcuts, is there any idea of tabbing? so one could have one for social, one for training, and another for combat?
Lytoza:  Fine idea!
Lytoza:  Original alt had 200 shortcuts available
Uadjet:  I don't know if that's been suggested, but it sounds like a good idea. That's how our main shortcuts work, so it should be possible to set up the player-set shortcuts in a similar way.
Resildren:  that would be great thank you
Uadjet:  I'll pass that along.
Uadjet:  Next bit of news is that Talad is looking into upgrading us from Unreal 5.1.1 to 5.4.3
Uadjet:  A lot of the idfference is things we don't need, as they're resource intensive, but there are engine improvements in there that will be nice to have.
Lytoza:  Makes sense then.
Uadjet:  And there are new features to the development side of things, so assets can be created entirely within unreal. That'll make things a lot simpler.
Uadjet:  Talad made some sample builds and let people in Discord download and test them.
Uadjet:  Mac was a bit of a challenge, but he got it working.
Anysu:  I tested it and it worked.
Anysu:  On  my mac. After I tried a few times it did not work since test server was not up.
>Anysu nods at Uadjet.
Uadjet:  I don't think we'll be using features like Lumen or Nanite, as those seems quite resource intensive. I'm not sure those are meant for MMO's.
>You are not part of any group.
Uadjet:  Oh, and Talad is back from Japan. There's a thread on Discord with pictures of the trip.
Gonger:  I have some news from the PR department. I played necro, and revived two forum threads, one on the Dryken Plane, and one one getting ancient players back. I would appreciate more feedback there, because I feel that we still need changes in the Plane so as not to chase away newbies.
Lytoza:  Love his mini-vacations that he provides for the PS community.
Gonger:  A few days ago I talked to a  newbie who let me know that he was SOOOO close to uninstall because of the Plane.
>Anysu sighs dramatically.
Gonger:  We talked about this before, but methinks we need to keep talking so as to get more improvements there.
Gonger:  I like Talad's idea of one-way drops, which should make things easier for newbies.
Lytoza:  Agreed
Gonger:  So there is still hope for further improvements... :)
>Anysu nods.
Gonger:  And getting ancient players back would mean a lot of players with characters that are beyond the plane already...
Resildren:  would probably help to let the newbies know they have a walk command as well
Gonger:  I will keep pushing Talad, no problem, but support is more than welcome, if only through a post saying, "We need more improvements"
Uadjet:  That would be helpful, yes.
Lytoza:  Is anyone helping you with ingame petitions?
Gonger:  Petitions are mostly treated by Game Masters, I believe.
Gonger:  Not sure Talad looks at them.
Uadjet:  No, that's just me. I do slip on those, as in the Legacy version of the game I could just set up a /managepetitions command in autoexec, and the petitions would be the first thing I saw every time I logged in.
Gonger:  But I see your point, Lytoza.
Lytoza:  Sounds like a feture request is needed
Gonger:  A frustrated newbie could easily write a petition, and does not have to join Discord or the forums to give a statement.
Gonger:  Oh, one of the Woiperdinger guild just logged on.
Anysu:  Never heard of that guild.
Lytoza:  Fine guild
Gonger:  Very old guild.
Anysu:  Nor heard of that player character.
Gonger:  Woiperdinger is Bavarian for Wolpertinger. Google Wolpertinger for some fun :)
Uadjet:  Ahh, I thought it was like a jackalope until I saw the wings.
Anysu:  Yup  that was unusual.
Uadjet:  With regard to your petitions, I've mostly been trying to wrap my head around the ring of summon familiar one. The quest does take and replace the ring as part of the quest, but I'll be damed if I can figure out why.
Gonger:  We should add Wolpertingers to PlaneShift... Or the equally famous Stone Louse (also a German invention)
Uadjet:  As given items always go into general inventory, it would prevent you from doing anything with the summoned creatures until it is equipped again.
Uadjet:  That would cause most of the issues.
Uadjet:  The ring not being visable could be that it was placed into a container, but that only happens if all general slots are full.
Anysu:  Ring of familiar is bugged?
Uadjet:  I'm going to ask Talad why the quest takes and gives the actual ring, when a bit of bracketed text could give that impression while leaving the ring equiipped.
Lytoza:  I just had a strange experience with it. First of all my mount was underneath the magic shop with only it's face appearing. ^ ^
Uadjet:  The spawn location of the mounts might not have been updated to the new map properly.
Lytoza:  Could be
Lytoza:  Maybe they should spawn outside the magic shop?
Resildren:  and every time i call him, he's sitting on me
Resildren:  akward
Lytoza:  sounds akward but amusing at the same time
Lytoza:  A drifter can't get outside the door and immediately needs to be dismissed.
Uadjet:  There's a script that controls that: create_rivnak_familiar
Uadjet:  I assume the coordinates are in there.
Uadjet:  Well, as usual we're well past the hour, so I think we can bring the meeting to a close.
Anysu:  Thanks for updates
Lytoza:  Thanks for your time and new details on what is happening in the game.
Gonger:  Thank you, Uadjet. And Support your local PR team.
Uadjet:  Have fun playing, and I'll see you again in two weeks!
Resildren:  yes thanks
Gonger:  As usual, leave the room before quitting.

Uadjet:  Hello and welcome to the Developer's Q&A! This is an out-of-character meeting where you can hear about the development of the game and ask the Dev and GM teams any questions you might have. If you do have any questions, please line up at the lecterns in front of the stage.
Zarre:  Hi Uadjet
Uadjet:  Okay, so we've had an update since the last time we've met.
Uadjet:  It'll make things easier to see, I suppose.
Uadjet:  As you no doubt know, Talad has been working on updating the models and textures for our characters.
Uadjet:  He has also started work on adding new traits to characters. New KINDS of traits, in fact. These are things like character hair style and color, face tattoos, etc.
Uadjet:  He's added new trait categories to both kran and enkis.
Uadjet:  Now, let's see if the command works...
Uadjet:  Bippity Boppity Boo!
Uadjet:  Nope. I'll try again.
Gonger:  Oompa loompa.
Uadjet:  Bippity Boppity Boo!
Resildren:  try using your left hand
Uadjet:  There, on the left shoulder.
Uadjet:  Kran can now choose to have crystal if they want to during character creation.
Uadjet:  That's easier to see, now.
Zarre:  Nice feature
Uadjet:  Now it's on the leg.
Resildren:  can kra it on the forehead?
Gonger:  Looks great.
Resildren:  is neat
Uadjet:  The new eye colours certainly make a difference too.
Uadjet:  Very intense.
Trensol:  would this have an effect on properties, say weapons and armor
Uadjet:  No, they're purely aesthetic.
Uadjet:  Now Enkis also have a couple new traits they can set: Jewelry and Jewelry Colour.
Uadjet:  Specifically, they get earrings of gold, silver, or red.
Uadjet:  You can't buy those, so currently they need a GM to add them. It's very simple to do.
Anysu:  nice
Anysu:  And we have fur.
Uadjet:  Yes, a much improved fur texture.
Inenily:  Test character here.
Inenily:  It's hard to see until you get close, but there are two piercings joined by a chain on the left side of my face.
Zarre:  Looks great
Resildren:  nice
Anysu:  Neat
Uadjet:  The earring styles are: none, claw earring, chain earring, triple earring, stack earring, and on males there is a spike earring. All in gold, silver, or red.
Inenily:  This is the stack earring.
Uadjet:  If you'd like earrings for an Enki character, just let me know.
Anysu:  ME!!!! Me!!
Inenily:  This is the claw earring
Anysu:  Like loop ones. Stacked.
Inenily:  And this is the triple earring.
Anysu:  Okay like the triple and stacked.
Uadjet:  gold, silver, or red?
Anysu:  Gold
Uadjet:  Okay, that's gold stacked earrings. How does it look?
Anysu:  cool
Resildren:  Anysu envie of the enkies
Zarre:  Agreed
Anysu smiles
Uadjet:  Yeah, the first Enkidukai with earrings!
>Anysu cheers happily at Small Table!
>Anysu cheers happily!
Anysu:  Liked to thank Uadjet and that table I keep greeting that isn't even my table
Uadjet:  Heheh!
Gonger:  Very cool, Anysu.
Anysu smiles
Uadjet:  I don't know when, but I'm sure battle tokens for Stonehammers are on the to-do list.
Anysu:  Thank you
Zarre:  Stalfos, you're holding a unique dagger in your left hand arent you? Don't remember ever seeing a red blade before.
Anysu:  So is there an option to have jewlery on both ears?
>Stalfos Kyralum dropped a Polished Bronze Dagger of Seduction.
Anysu:  I like just the one ear, but I am curious.
Uadjet:  Not currently, no.
Anysu:  So where will we buy these if they make it into game to purchase? The jewlery in Gug?
Uadjet:  Or someone in Ojaveda. Toda, or a new merchant.
Anysu:  okay
Uadjet:  But I think Ojaveda is a must.
Uadjet:  On top of that, Talad upgraded all shields. Extra geometry to make them rounder when they should be, and the new textures are 4x the size of the old ones.
>Uadjet dropped a Golden Shield.
>Stalfos picked up a Polished Bronze Dagger of Seduction
Uadjet:  A randomly selected example.
Uadjet:  The sunshine and shadow shields have entirely new artwork, but you'll have to find that yourselves. ;)
Uadjet:  Also, new weapons! They're race-specific, but anyone can use them. The galkard, for example, is Nolthrir. The hookknife and hookblade you saw recently are Klyros.
Uadjet:  There is also one new weapon for Kran, Enki, Stonehammer, Diaboli, Lemur, and Dermorian. And a Stonehammer shield.
Uadjet:  All will make appearances in upcoming events.
Uadjet:  Oh, and a new Diaboli M robe. Don't think they had one before.
Uadjet:  Now, if you want to get a better look at these items, there is a new 'inspect mode".
Anysu:  enki blade!
Uadjet:  Right-click examine an item - like the shield in front of me - and look on the left side of the window. Click on the eye, and see what happens.
Uadjet:  Right-click again to exit.
Zarre:  Nice feature to have
Anysu:  yup
Uadjet:  That works for items on the ground, or in your inventory.
Gonger:  I was falling after the exit-right-click.
Uadjet:  What's the point of upgrading models and textures if we can't get a gook look at them?
Gonger:  But very cool feature.
Uadjet:  Momentarily? Me too.
Resildren:  old arts there has a back up it seems
Uadjet:  I get the same thing with the new /item window, but it doesn't correct.
Anysu:  I need to head out. Adapter is not working and battery is going down ast with ps here.
Anysu:  Thanks for jewlery and info
Uadjet:  Ahh, and the red dagger is likely a rare weapon. Those can be of different colours and have movement trails now.
Uadjet:  Let's see...
Resildren:  yes i have a very old ring, i'm sure it wil never get updated
Uadjet:  Stone Labyrinth simplified, with one-way drops decreasing time spent wandering...a thousand textures upgraded...
Uadjet:  And now Talad is on vacation in Japan, so while he isn't working on the game I imagine he'll come back refreshed and possibly with new inspirations for PS!
Uadjet:  Any questions on all of that?
Zarre:  No questions but I'm truly looking forward to seeing so many changes.
Resildren:  he's done some great art
Uadjet:  He has. He's been using AI to help, otherwise doing 1000+ textures...
Resildren:  he deserved a vacation
Resildren:  but i dont know about that pizza he was holding
Resildren:  um never mind I guess that was LigH
Uadjet:  Durian pizza? Yeah, that would certainly be an experience.
Uadjet:  I did once threated to make someone surstr?mming tacos, but they didn't know what it was. Wasted threat....
Uadjet:  Okay, the Observatory questline is done, and now that I don't have that 97 step quest hanging over my head I'm making progress on the Essential Trail / Delver quests.
Resildren:  it took me a week to find out the Hydlaa had another entrance
Resildren:  so looking forward to these new quests
Uadjet:  Heh, yeah. For some reason I still have trouble mapping the gates and the roads in my head. It feels like the tutorial area gate should be on the other side.
Uadjet:  I'll just hover over it for a while some day.
Uadjet:  So I'm writing farming, forestry, and fishing quests right now.
Resildren:  worlds sure got alot bigger then pre-unreal
Zarre:  It sure has
Uadjet:  If I can write them, I'll have some quests that introduce the creature examination ability. I've got two quests in Dever that would work for that. One is local wildlife, and one is domesticated creatures.
Zarre:  How did I ever get so lost here many years ago? >.>  xD
Resildren:  as an Exploer some of these areas are killing me
Resildren grins
Uadjet:  Ahh, have you filled out much of the map in the compendium?
Zarre:  I took advantage of those tours more than once.
Resildren:  still the west to discover
Uadjet:  Well, don't spend too much time looking for Kormia. It's on the map, but I think the few buildings that were there vanished a while ago.
Resildren:  is there a merchant that sells compases? i heard that was implented?
Uadjet:  They exist, but the quest isn't in yet.
Resildren:  ah ok
Uadjet:  I give them out at events on occasion, so people should have spares for trade.
Resildren:  always willing to barter
>Stalfos Kyralum dropped a Compass.
Zarre:  Are wiki and forum links normally displayed on Discord?
Resildren's eyes brighten
Zarre:  Bug tracker too.
>Resildren picked up a Compass
Resildren:  iohhh nice
Uadjet:  Links to those on Discord are fine, I think.
Zarre:  Where are they?
Uadjet:  There's no link, however. The only thing that gets automatically to Discord are posts in the Help channel.
Uadjet:  https://planeshift.top-ix.org/pswiki/index.php/Main_Page
Uadjet:  https://www.hydlaaplaza.com/PlaneShift/smf/index.php
Uadjet:  http://hydlaaplaza.com/PlaneShift/flyspray/index.php?do=tasklist&project=2&pagenum=1
Zarre:  Have those linked in my browser. Just wondered if this same info was available via Discord.
Uadjet:  They really could be added as a sticky, though.
Zarre:  Think of new players
Uadjet:  I just mentioned it to Talad.
Uadjet:  In the Devs and GMs channel.
Zarre:  Thanks
Uadjet:  Well, if that's all I think we can bring the meeting to a close.
Uadjet:  If I missed something, just stand in front of me and jump a few times.
Uadjet:  It's faster than typing a message.
>Uadjet picked up a Golden Shield
Zarre:  Thanks everyone for all you do here.
Resildren:  yes, thanks
Uadjet:  Then thanks for coming, and I'll see you again in two weeks! Until then, have fun playing the game and maybe enjoy and event or two!
Gonger:  Don't forget to leave the building before you quit.

General Discussion / Re: Let's get ancient players back...
« Last post by derula on September 06, 2024, 03:38:37 pm »
These are all valid points, but imagine you meet your old RP friend again, and for the same reason that you prefer other games now, this friend would prefer to stay in PlaneShift...

Yep, as I said, then it might be something worth considering.

The only other game I have tried during the past years was World of Warcraft, and even though I was on a so-called "RP server", absolutely nobody was RPing there...

Largely my experience, too, even if you have an RP community, people typically also want to play the game "normally," which takes away from RP time. And when there is RP, it's often just "tavern RP," i.e. RPers meeting in a tavern and making small talk.

What I'm thinking is, if you have a group to RP with that share your mindset, the game doesn't really matter. Just select any online game where you can walk around together and have some features useful for RP, and you'll be able to build something fun.

Obviously this forum is about PlaneShift, I'm not saying "we should all move on to something else," that's for everyone to decide for themselves and not even the point I'm trying to make.

My point was more, even if you reach ancient players, and they're excited to meet old friends again, I don't know how many would consider going back to PS. If they left knowing they'd have to leave their friends behind, I don't know if "all your friends are here" will be the message that brings them back.

Really, it seems like you have two goals: repopulate PlaneShift and bring old acquaintances back together. I feel like these are partly in conflict. So what I'm trying to say is, achieving both goals with one email may not be easy. If the email focuses too much on PS, it may be ignored by many. If it focuses too much on old friendships, they might come back, hang around the forum for a few weeks, and then leave again.

I'm not trying to say it's a pointless endeavor, or that other games are better, or that people have moved on and won't ever return. I'm trying to explain why I think it's a bit of a tightrope walk, and that it's important to get the message just right if you want to see the outcome you desire.

What would be my solution?

Don't make the email about repopulating PlaneShift at all. Make it about the community. Talk about events that happened, remind people of different characters and what their role in the world was. Focus on relationships between the characters. Maybe get some old players to write stories, retrospectives, IC documents, etc. Remind people what made their time in Yliakum so special, and that most of these old people are still out there, somewhere. Ensure to get as many people as possible to just think about it again, and bring up positive memories.

If people have a positive connection to those events and those characters, they might want to engage with the community again. Never force the issue. Never tell them, "oh, you know, PS is much better now with PSUnreal." Let them make the decision organically, if they want to. Nobody should feel pushed back into it, or like it's something transactional ("you're having fun in our community, so you owe us to play the game again," even if just implied).

As those Oldbies get more comfortable interacting with the community again, start communicating what's happening in the game in a way they can see it, but don't feel like you're asking them to get back into the game. The same way you shared old stories in emails, share new stories from the game, maybe with screenshots. Show, don't tell people that the "good old days" are also the "good new days." Give them the chance to decide they want to get back in.

But I feel like you get one chance on that. If at any point, people feel coerced, or like the community has a toxic element to it that reminds them too much of the bad memories that contributed to why they left, or if they conclude that the game hasn't improved enough, or if they think current RP isn't up to the high standard they're remembering (even if that's just false memories), they might just be gone again.

Am I overcomplicating things? Maybe in regard to some people. I'm sure there are a few that would go like "heck yeah, forgot about PlaneShift, I'mma jump back in." But most of the people I remember had grievances with how the community, the game, and development was run, how lore and rules were implemented and enforced, were discomforted by perceived double standards in the GM team, etc. etc. A lot of issues aside from low population. Some of them just because they were bitter, some of them justified.

Are you sure all such potential issues are addressed and fixed now, and people will feel much better now and stay? For me, there's still a looming air of discomfort connected to the community. Not going into detail here, but feel free to DM me in Discord if you want me to elaborate. And if I got an email overtly asking me to come back to the game without evidence that any of the issues I used to have were addressed, it probably wouldn't be very successful in motivating me to come back.

[Edit: softened last sentence because I didn't like how strongly it was worded... I really just want to help but sometimes my tone is off... sorry if it is off in this message.]

The only other game I have tried during the past years was World of Warcraft, and even though I was on a so-called "RP server", absolutely nobody was RPing there...
Everybody was just running around like crazy, from one quest to the next, "Oh my, I still need to kill 5 x in area y for my daily quota", things like this...
PlaneShift has a small but (again) growing RP community, which seems to be a rare thing in other games.
Don't get me wrong, I do hope you find your friend again, and some common RP ground. But if not, PlaneShift is probably one of the best spots to find RP.

Either way, best of luck to you.

Gonger

  • Old relationships (friend or foe) can be renewed, or restarted. Imagine meeting someone in RL after a couple of years. You both have evolved in this time, and therefore things between you might be different now.
  • Active stories - of course right now there are few of them. But the more active players there are, the more active stories there will be. And, as pointed out quite correctly, we have the weekly RP events run by Uadjet. Also consider that in the long run more players will mean more Developers, more Game Masters, etc.

My last message was maybe a bit troll-y, I think I should give a more proper answer.

I was in an active RP for about one year, with mostly just a single individual. I fondly remember that time now and wish I could reconnect with that person, maybe RP with them again. At the time, I had to terminate the RP. It was the right decision then, but now I wish I'd stayed in contact in some way.

(Side note: If anyone reads this who I also RPed with, I'm not saying that I didn't enjoy interacting with your characters as well, I loved all the RP we got into together, but my point is that there was one person that was just consistently there, so there was never a downtime where I was just walking around trying to find RP.)

Ever since then, I have been looking for something like what we had over the course of that year. Just a person to RP with, who is always there, who appreciates my stories as much as I appreciate theirs. I have tried so many different games, but never ever got into another RP like this.

So I've been contemplating a lot about how cool it would be to get this consistency back, and this... to me, it felt like teamwork, like we were building something together. And it was nice. And I don't know, maybe that person moved on, we never really talked OOC, so I have no idea how they were feeling about me, maybe they felt like I let them down or betrayed them, maybe they don't ever want to interact with me again, and that would be fine. But I have this glimmer of hope that somehow, some day, we meet again, and everything is the same as it was back then. Pipe dream, maybe.

That said, assuming they come back and everything is as awesome as it was, I don't think I would want to RP in PlaneShift again. If it's the only way I can RP with them again, then maybe. But I'd prefer to get into some other game. Maybe one of the ones I have tried over the years, where I have built a character I really liked before realizing nobody wants to RP with me like I did in PS back in the day. I still like all of my characters, but never got to be them much. I would prefer to fix that over more PS.

So, on the one hand, yes, I would like to reconnect with some people. On the other hand, I would preferably not do that in PlaneShift.

Hope this more serious answer is useful :)

General Discussion / Re: Dryken Plane, again...
« Last post by Talad on September 02, 2024, 09:18:49 am »
Talad, that sounds quite interesting. So Dryken Plane be part of new character generation?

You are already in game while in the Dryken Plane, but you will have to recompose your shattered body/soul and make some choices. I would not call it character creation.

For me the new idea still does not accommodate for people who have been born in Yliakum.

Did you create a Kran or Lemur in PSUnreal? The gods are asking you to go to the Dryken Plane and help other people coming to Yliakum. Similarly for other people born in Yliakum it will happen the same thing. Practically it's hard for me to create a different storyline/char creation only for that. If I change the Dryken Plane significantly, I will have to adapt again for Kran and Lemur.

Hi Damola,

Thanks for your answer. Some of your points have been discussed on Discord. My apologies for forgetting that not everybody is there!
Giving mail addresses to Guild Leaders - we pretty much agreed to drop this, there is a potential for abuse. I  probably was a bit naive there. Uadjet proposed that the Guild Leaders can send one message through the PS Admin team. That would certainly be an option, but right now let's just do the general message, to all ancient players, from the PS Admin team.
Of course the team would also have to do the work behind, except writing the letter where we have a draft from Yours Truly.
Finally I also think it is a good idea to send private mail to mail addresses that were given to you by individuals. There should not be problems with this.
I re-write the final question of my previous post:

@PS Admin Team: Are we going to do this now, or not?

Thanks to all who contributed so far!

As for sending an official mail to all mail addresses… I think this could only be done with the approval and help of Talad or somebody else who has access to the mail addresses.

Also I am not sure what GDPR and other data/privacy regulations (like in California I think) might hinder this in case you adhere to them. I did not think of it before and thus did not mention it. I do think a mail or two would be quite harmless, but when sent automatically to everyone as far as I see it the GDPR may apply. Unless it can be made clear that we are more like a private group of people.

Especially the part about giving mail addresses to guild leaders. I am not sure I'd want to receive those as a guild leader although I may easily have most of them anyway due to taking over the web site of guild quite some time ago. Although I went to great lengths to allow members of the site to remove their mail address from account data which is not supported officially in Wordpress I believe most did not bother at all. Actually back then I indeed mailed everyone regarding GDPR agreement which has been less than a stellar success to put it mildly. Some even reacted in an offended way. But that might have been due to people not preferring to be asked whether they agree to the privacy policy I came up with. I might have overreacted to the GDPR introduction back then, but these were my experiences so far.

I consider sending individually crafted mails to at least some long not seen players from our guild that I actually know more about from meeting them in game at some time. If its an individually crafted mail to each one… I think this is more like sending a personal mail which is not covered by GDPR. I think this is an approach I can take. And I would just use the mail addresses I already have. But sending a mail to a character's player I have no idea about cause they have been active in the guild before I started playing PlaneShift… I am not sure what to write in such a mail. And I think those are in the majority even.

For the global approach Gonger, I think you would have to discuss with Talad as the project lead.

Talad, that sounds quite interesting. So Dryken Plane be part of new character generation?

I think removing any timings may make things quite a bit easier and less frustrating for new players.

For me the new idea still does not accommodate for people who have been born in Yliakum. And I still have no good idea how to combine being born in Yliakum with… Dryken Plane. There could be a way which would include new lore. Like the Gods themselves sending each new born, even if born in Yliakum, through Dryken Plane. But then… you would have a new born baby in Dryken Plane which does not make all that much sense in itself.

Of course one can shut this down by just saying: All new characters come from other worlds. But that completely parts from anything I believed I knew about PlaneShift and Yliakum. People are living for generations in Yliakum. It is natural to be born there.

A way that may work is… that new characters born in Yliakum could be sent to Dryken Plane as part of the tutorial. But no matter how I turn it around… it is hard to me to make characters born in Yliakum work with Dryken Plane. I just do not seem to find a way to bring these two together consistently as I fail to come up with a lore that would really explain this in a way that makes sense ICly.

So while the improvements you suggested do not yet solve this more fundamental topic, I am fall for going with them. Any improvement may help more new players coming in.
