World Builder
« on: November 12, 2004, 11:01:21 pm »
Anyone mind telling me the pro\'s and cons or World Builder?

can it be used to contribute to PS? does it have a good variety of exporters? are the tools good? bugs?

i saw that it was very inexpensive and just had to know why, because all the animations and renders ive seen that use world builder are just as good as any other program

Farewell Moogie, Farewell Draklar, Farewell Drey. you will be missed.

I\'m assuming you\'re refering to Animatek\'s World Builder?  It looks like it will get the job done, but definitely not worth it.  You can make 3d landscapes in blender just fine (I think it may even support height maps - look around for a tutorial).  I\'m pretty sure only blender and 3ds max have CS exporters, so you would need to be using blender anyway (assuming it has a common format with which to export to).  Not to mention, when it comes to populating the maps with buildings and features, blender will again need to be used.  My recommendation: don\'t waste your time, learn blender instead.  I just pulled blender out again this week to muck around with, and I must say I was pleasantly surprised with the interface and tools (though it will definitely take some getting used to).

Blender supports height maps, just set it as a texture and use the noise button, for more detail, check here: http://www.ingiebee.com/Blendermania/Landscapes%20with%20Gimp.htm and here: http://www.linuxgraphic.org/section3d/blender/pages/didacticiels/paysages/didac1-ang.html Hope this helps.

Yeah, nice work JellyWerker!  I\'ll add those to the 3d guide.  With those there is no need for anything like worldbuilder or terragen (except maybe to test out the heightmaps).
