Inclement weather
« on: December 07, 2004, 09:20:24 am »
I had a great idea whilst driving home from school tonight. There is a weather system in PS right now, but its pretty mediocre. Just a slight drizzle every now and again. What about adding some more variety, such as different intensities of rain, ranging from a slight drizzle, to cats and dogs downpours. Also, since there will be a fog system in future releases (used to obscure frame rate killing polys at a distance). This fog should vary from time to time. Full distance visability most of the time, but sometimes fog so thick, an enki couldnt see its tail. (I love fog, and it was my inspiration. Driving in it is great :D )

if that is implemented that I hope the weather changes quickly. When the fog is thick enough that you can\'t see your own tail then chances are you can\'t see where you are going either.

Can weather be turned off altogether?

-  A dwarf walks into the inn and shakes off his soaked cloak on some nearby diaboli.
-  \"Its raining enki and kran out there!\" he states in a gruff voice.
-  The diaboli male leans over real close to the dwarf and says mock kindly, \"Yes, Master Dwarf, you should take care not to step in any puddles.\"
-  \"Why is that?\" the dwarf asks.
-  \"You might drown!\"  the diaboli shouts to the laughter of the rest of the patrons.
-  The dwarf just grins and clasps the diaboli\'s hand, \"Good to see you again, Cleed.\"

I like the fog too.  Nothing like taking a walk through creature infested woods and not being able to see ten feet in front of you. :D

well... euh... hate to bother you guys.
i havent been pretty active lately, but last time i checked everything was more or less underground. There is a large crystal shining in the middle of the cave, generating as much light as the sun (and if the sun doesnt shine, neither does the crystal). that is how day and night are made...
but rain..... underground.... i cant see that happen.

You know, there is a whole world ABOVE the cave too, which would have rain and fog and snow and hail and... whatever else might fall from the sky. Its just an idea.

Of course you can find your way through thick fog, it just wouldn\'t be easy. That\'s why we have experienced cartographers in Yliakum. There maps should be so accurate we can find out way in any condition.
My name is NOT pronounced, \"Kway-per,\" it\'s pronounced \"Kye-per.\"

Surprisingly, weather could happen in  building or maybe even a cavern, even in real life. This is because as water rises due to evaporation, it naturally cools as it is taken away from the heat source, and then condenses (when at a low enough temperature) to form rain. Thus, if the temperature at the top of the cavern is low enough, or the building high enough, rain and other weather patterns can form. Perhaps there is another race (titans of greek mythology, possibly related to kran) up at the top of the huge cavern that is keeping things plenty chilly enough? Fog could also form if the \"titans\" came a bit lower or became a bit more powerful. I also think that cyclones, thunderstorms and hurricaines should happen in game. It\'s just the thought of all those beatiful buildings, characters and items getting sucked up into the huge whirling vortex of dust that makes my mind up. *laughs maniacally*

There is a reason for the weather, though. It is the waterfalls that are at the walls of Yliakum. These can create mist, and if the crystals infrared radiation varies in intensity (it doesn\'t have to vary even if the light comes from the surface), then it can create different weather conditions if there is sufficient space.

Regarding the maps... think they\'ll be kind enough to implement a \"You are here\" dot?
Maybe they can make guides a valid job, they are more resistant to fog, so while everything else is pitch grey to them it\'s with outlines of objects so they can see where they are heading.

There was a very long thread that explained that somewhere. I think people came to the conclusion that the cavern is big enough for moisture to form into clouds, which, in turn, produces rain.

Since it the Yliakum is entirely underground with flowing water, the humidity would be intense, possibly causing more fog than normal. Fog is caused when the water is warmer than the air above it. If you have ever been in a cave, such as the incredible Mammoth caves of Kentucky, you\'ll notice that the air is always thick and cool. Flashlights are always haunted by faint breezes of mist and fog.

I think a large amount of fog would be great for the game. Of course the thickness would not be consistent day-by-day and would differ between the levels of the Yliakum. Not only would it provide a general spooky atmosphere, but a lower system load since you won\'t need to render far-off objects as much. It can also provide some creative spell and object ideas, such as spells to clear the mists or an amulet to provide motion sensing. Maybe it can house ghost or spirit monsters within heavy curtains of fog?

Anyways, a dynamic weather system will give the game a realistic atmosphere, where many other games go wrong. Although calculating wind may be too much..... I always admired the GTA III weather, perhaps that can provide ideas?
Beware that I am distorted in my wording if you do not understand me at all.

Maybe there could also be like heat waves where the player will lose stamina quickly because of the heat, or cold days where people will lose defence from being cold. Fog would be great too. It would let all the assasins come out and stuff :).

My guess as to a simulation on a foggy day.
- An Assassin is trying to kill a very specific player
! Myst Assassin wishes to duel you, Accept? (yes/no)
!> no
- Assassin walks off dissapointed since the player couldn\'t be targeted.

Simulation legend:
- Narrative description
! Game event
!> Answer to game even

I guess Weather can be used in the Arena also depending on which area you choose you can have a unique playing field.
