custom GUI
« on: January 08, 2005, 01:11:59 am »
Alright, so I made a custom GUI (lots of work :/ ).  Here\'s a screenie (don\'t mind the messed up text, took that on my parents\' rig which has a terrible GPU) and notice the custom target marker as well (bottom next to info window).  It is still in the works, and needs quite a bit of tweaking still.  It wasn\'t meant to be overly pretty, but was really just me getting the hang of the gui (for better custom GUI\'s in the future hopefully).  I\'ll release a decent version of it soon.

Now my question is, would there be a big enough following for a website devoted to this sort of stuff (custom gui\'s, loading screens, markers, etc.)?  If so, I\'d like to make one, but I don\'t want to be the only one contributing to it (otherwise it would just plain suck).  Let me know what you think.

There would be at least one other contributer to that website ;) I\'ve got plans for making a custom gui myself :)

Hmm, I like the top buttons alot. Nice work. 8)

What file is the target marker in? I can\'t seem to find it.

Thats cool, how do you do it, and how hard is it?

Icefalcon: The target marker is in the effects file (PS_root/art/effects) and is entitled \"marker01.png\"  I\'m surprised at how good even some simple designs look in-game.  I\'m probably going to release some of those and my silver toolbar seperately from the gui.

JellyWerker: All I did is replace the default gui art files with ones that I made.  I didn\'t actually edit any xml files (I\'m assuming it\'s done in xml) though I would like to get into that.  It\'s actually quite a bit of work, even for a gui as simple as the one I made.  I give mad provs to whoever did the default PS ui, \'cause it looks great and probably took forever to make.

Installation of custom a custom ui is pretty easy because all you do is paste in a new art file into the PS directory and it will replace all the changed files.  The downside is that the updater will detect the changed files and redownload them all (only a couple megs I think).  That makes the backing up of the original ui necessary.

there is, in fact, a place of such things... until the person who ran it had hosting dificulties... he has essentially given my the domain (ps-mc.com) and I\'m hosting it now. if anyone wants to do something with it, give me a PM or contact me in IRC (josePhoenix or any variant and iSleep or iPhoenix).

About the website, I\'m willing to help and contribute. Sonds like it could be really awesome.

Also, about the marker, is there a way to change the color? Is that in code somewhere, because the .png is black and white.

Icefalcon: I think it\'s probably somwhere in this xml file -> PlaneShift Crystal Blue\\data\\effects\\misc\\target.xml

I think both the target.xml and marker.xml (to show you where the mouse run destination is) are exactly the same.  It looks like you will need to change this string which appears several times in both files:
Code: [Select]
I\'ll try changing those values and run a test a little later.

:emerald:

Edit:  Success.  Changing just one of those strings to 200/200/40 resulted in one of those rotating things being yellow.
This means you can not only change the color, but you can have different colored ones if you want.  Nifty.

Edit2: After some practice I managed to come up with this. 8)

Well, to be blunt, it looks sad. A start, I guess.
And modifying the files distributed under the PS license is not allowed either (toolbar). I don\'t know if that applies just to media though, since xml files are code.

A way to save your files from the updater is to mark them readonly. ;)
And I see you\'ve already found the to-be-ultimate resource for eeffects. :)

lynx: *sigh* Yeah, forgot about the license.  I guess I won\'t be releasing any of that (I used some things from the original ui in my gray one).  My only question is, how is this different from taking the default skins and doing hue adjusts or tweaks to them (which it seems many people are doing, not that I\'m trying to pass off blame or anything, I just think a little consistency would be nice).  Anyway, I guess it\'s not that big a deal anyway, plans were already in the works for a 100% custom ui and toolbar next.

About the \"to-be-ultimate resource for eeffects\", when I made that custom target effect I actually hadn\'t heard of it.  I just sorta edited the xml file (hadn\'t touched xml before) and cooked up the In-N-Out logo (which by the way was supposed to be a joke, apparently no one has heard of In-N-Out around here, my roommate thought it was hilarious).  I\'ve been enlightened though, and yes, it is stupendous. :D
