I\'m not suprised, you live in a state that has been hit by just about four consecutive hurricanes.

ahhh yup, just another reason why most internet games (including Planeshift) should be as friendly to the 56k user as possible.
My name is NOT pronounced, \"Kway-per,\" it\'s pronounced \"Kye-per.\"

I don\'t think bandwidth would matter much...

What would matter a lot would be the server\'s response rate (ping time).

The smaller transfer required for each ping would mean more pings per second.  More players per line.  And smoother gameplay.

So there\'s already quite a lot of incentive to have a small packet (which in turn, good for 56k).

Has anyone suggested compressing the packets?
although I could not tell you how it would work @ the mechanical level...

Random Thought: I really doubt making the combat system more interactive would increase packet size much if it isn\'t already...

Well, compression is nice, but it will create more load for the server and client, which translate to high ping time, which in turn translate to no change in bandwidth.

Unless of course, the packets are compressed such that the time to process them in negligible.

support dialup
« Reply #65 on: January 11, 2005, 05:54:28 am »
I know dialup is getting outdated, but support it. There is not very many games anymore that support it at all.  If you would support it more 56 kers would play.
The things with people updating. They usually can\'t. Myself, I live off a main highway, and cannot recive DSL or Cable in my area. I\'ve been in a debate with Telus to bring the service out here, but with no luck, and only lies. Shaw, the local cable service says they will never bring it out here. The only solution is sat, and it sucks. The download speeds are good, but your upload sucks. Not sutible for gaming at all. Also the price is beyond anything. It would cost at least 1000 dollars canadian to install and about 100 a month. I\'d rather stick to dialup.

I wist I could get broadband, I am getting a sub-station in my area in a couple of months. Then I am getting 512 down, 128 up. Don\'t think 56k is uber slow, it can be fast depending what type of file you are downloading, just don\'t share it through the network like me, then it is uber slow.

.MAX - 10-15kbps  (3D File)
.ZIP/JPG/ any type of compressed file - 1-6kbps
.HTML/HTM - 10 - 15 kbps
.EXE- 2 - 6 kbps

I wonder why HTML and MAX files are so fast...        /me starts developing some conspiracy theory.

ahh 56k isnt that bad, unless you want to actually do stuff :P

broadband isnt all its cracked up to be... sure i can download at and average of 750KBps(kilobytes) but my upload sucks balls... i think we can max it at 25KBps before our connection gets killed and we have to restart the modem :\\

I have t3 internet and i can download stuff at 27mb per second or something that fast. I work a big company, and I work from home. To make sure my work will be dilivered as fast as possible, they supply me with t3 internet.

Cable - Cable goes through your cable TV line. DSL goes through your phone line, so you don\'t need cable TV or a cable line.

T1/T2/T3 are satelite connections. While they download fast, most have extreme lag, which can make your connection rather unresponsive at times - much worse than 56k, infact.

All depends on the weather though. :D

God knows how long this threads been inactive I did a search about only dling 208megs of CB when it said I needed 220 and I came across this thought I\'d be interesting. Anyway I thought I\'d throw my 2 cents in and say I cant get anything were I live. I\'m lucky to have up to a 42.6k bps now because of a new modem. Believe me after my dad got dsl down at his work he wont even deal with our dial up and I cry to think that I\'m no more than a half mile out of reach....so close but so damn far...come to me wire of goodness come
